I was in my Local CEX today (for everyone who isn't British, CEX sells practically anything technological, bad thing is everything is pre-owned)

I was looking at the Gamecube section when i found a game i thought i would NEVER see in any shop.

Pokemon: XD Gale of Darkness.

i bought it for £22 (the most expensive Gamecube game in the shop, all the others were not even past a 10er) and this got me thinking.

What rare games have you seen in a shop? Did you buy it? Was it worth it?
I REMEMBER YOU...you were asking where to find that game like 2 months ago :pP

I've bought Chrono Trigger and Cross on eBAY, I also got the FFVIII PC port back in the day and I don't think it exists anymore.

There's one I'm looking for on the cheap but can't find it: Lost Kingdoms 1/2 for Gamecube. The thing can't be worth more than $10-15

I reckon I got most of you beat.

Of course it set me back nearly $130 Australian (actually slightly cheaper than what I usually see it for) so there's probably a few of you thinking I'm not much of a winner.
TOMBI! :D :D :D Mannn I remember the days when young me spent hours playing around on the demo.... Never did get the the whole game in the end. :'(

OT: I do have Tombi 2 though, that I got a little while ago. More than makes up for the lack of the first. :D

Project Zero (Fatal Frame for those not in the PAL territories). £10 from the CEX website, actually. If it's in good condition when it arrives I think I'll get the third game from there too since it's pretty rare. They don't have the second available to sell.

I also remember looking for Tales of Vesperia over a year ago and ended up shelling out £45 for a brand new copy, the same with Persona 4 (I got it right after finishing Persona 3 so was desperate to get it while I could).
You found persona 4 Pal version? you lucky son of a... I would buy a PS2 if I can ever find that game.

I've got the xbox version of project zero 2 so I've got one up on you aswell.
Erm...

Not all that hard to find,
I bought a copy when it first came out
Amazon is really handy for that sort of thing. I was overjoyed when I finally managed to get a European Tales of Symphonia game.
(I used to have an American one and used a Freeloader disc to run it, but then nintendo released a patch on the wii that stopped all that...)

I don't know whether it's just being petty or not, but I almost feel like having Amazon, eBay, etc. at your fingertips to acquire any game ruins the "thrill of the hunt" that comes with finding rare games.
It's not as exciting as finding a game you never thought you'd see in the bargain bin in a game shop.

That's not a rare game, you can buy it almost everywhere if they sell PS2 games. I found 3 copies of Infection at an FYE last month. I own all 7 games released in America so I didn't pay attention to it.
I wouldn't know about in the US, but in sweden they essentially dont exist.

The Dark Eye?
I'm not sure if it qualifies as a rare game, but it took me some searching to find the freaking thing on the net. No torrents or anything, just a direct download. So worth it, though.

I recently bought a copy of Betrayal in Antara, which I'm sure sold well enough, but "decent selling" for an obscure PC RPG from the mid 90's translates out to "Holy crap, I never thought I'd see a copy in the wild again!" Other than that, I haven't bought anything particularly rare lately -- although I'm proud to be one of the very few owners of Mazes of Fate, which is a GBA game that never got a distribution deal with any brick and mortar stores, and as far as I know, was only sold through amazon.com and the developer's ebay account.

I once saw a new copy in an FYE, but there must be a really weird story as to how it got there, because the developer went out of business before they could get any decent distribution deal. It's a shame, too -- they managed to finish a remake for the DS, complete with a proper distribution deal, but then they had to shut shut their doors before actually getting it on the shelf.

Perhaps not but I personally would rather have the game than the chance of the thrill,
Besides even with amazon it doesn't mean there is no hunting I often hunt out the best quality I can get for the lowest price,
Also Amazon doesn't always have what you are looking for eg
The rarest game that I have is a PAL version of Soul Nomad and the World Eaters the only copy I could find was on Play.com for about £30 and it was the Itallian version.

Oddly enough the Dub track and the text was all in english there wasn't even an Itallian track on it,
The manual was though :(

By Rare games do you mean games that are hard to find/valuable? Or games made by Rare?

I found Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner at my local Gamestop for $13.

I believe I win.
You do win, I remember the time I saw a copy for around the same price, but being a jobless highschool student, I didn't have the cash. That was at least two to four years ago, and I haven't seen a copy since. On the other hand, when did you buy it? Because I had a nice little conversation with a clerk at the local Gamestop a month or so back, who had just sold a copy the day before. He told me that Gamestop usually sells it for about $5, it's just rare for a store to actually have a copy. Considering the rarity and quality of the game, I wouldn't consider 13 bucks a ripoff, but it is odd that Gamestop would have that much variation in their prices.

I found my dad's old floppy-disc of Frontier Elite Two the other day. Ironically enough I found it whilst looking to see if we still had an old copy of one of the Monkey Island games I remembered playing.

I believe Sniper Elite is quite hard to find for the PS2.
Really? I seem to find multiple copys every time I look at the gamingbin at my local mall and rental-store.

OT: Bought System Shock 1 in box from e-bay. Pretty pleased.

Get this. I was at a flea market recently, and I was looking through this bin of PS1 games, not expecting to find anything good. Then, right before my eyes, I saw Final Fantasy VII. Greatest Hits edition, but it was still Final Fantasy VII. I was shocked. I asked the guy who was running the place how much he was selling it for and he said "$2." I told him that it was worth a lot more than that, but he still sold it to me for $2 and there were no scratches whatsoever. That was insane.

Nice find, but it's actually about as common as a PS1 game can get without being called Gran Tourismo. The prices online are only so inflated because there are fanboys who are willing to pay more than the game cost new for something that should, by all rights, be cheaper than Metal Gear Solid or any of the Tony Hawk games. I remember pawn shops having stacks of the game for quite a few years after it came out -- it only costs so much now because very few places sell PS1 games outside of the internet, and the sellers have figured out that people will pay whatever they have to to get a game with a reputation like Final Fantasy VII.

I bought it three or so months ago. I'm not sure about GS's variations in price but I thought it was a good deal.

Not "recent" but my 2 favourite rarities:
A nomad? Oh man I want I want. I have my Game Gear sat behind me now, but alas I've lost every game for it bar two.

Actually my hardware collection is extensive, but the vast majority of my games have been lost since I moved out. Still have Panzer Dragoon Saga though.
