"What happens in studies with soldiers is that when they play videogames, they were over-daring, because they were used to having 'more lives'. These guys get killed because they don't think that getting shot is going to be a big deal," Hammersmith said.
Get them playing minecraft. No game makes anyone quite so cautious and happy to be alive.

Alternatively, have games stop pretending being real and being just shy enough of the real thing that it looks misleading. I bet that if gamers do act more reckless because of games they do it because of Call of Duty and not Team Fortress.

I think people are completely missing the cause of why FPS gamers would be more reckless in actual combat. It's not because "They think they have more lives", but because in combat, there is no thinking involved (In dangerous situations, the brain shuts down unneccessary processes like "Higher Thinking" to give more power to things that keep you alive like "Faster Reflexes"). Everything is done on Kata-induced instinct from repetition and intense training, essentially "Hard-coding" it into your brain as a critical process, so it remains when the brain purges nonessential thinking processes to work more efficiently.

The repetition and behaviors from play (from wrestling as a 3-year old to Halo@21) become hard-wired like this, and are drawn on when the situations arise. Every young animal plays, and all games are a simuluation of some sort with a "response+reward" system. Humans have just refined gaming to a higher level. It's the primary method of learning.

"Muscle Memory"

And, on another note, if the guy's credentials aren't clear because they are so vague... remember, these are BLACK OPS. The operations the U.S. Is Not Involved With (Plausible Deniability). So, a lot of that information is likely classified or a security risk to the U.S. if it were revealed. The reason his authenticity as a Black Op agent is unprovable is because that's kinda the point... If we can confirm he is who he says he is and what he's done, it would damage National Security and Reputation.

Asking this guy for such verification is essentially going up to an Intelligence Operative and asking, "Hi, would you mind telling me any Top-Secret information you might have regarding any Top Secret Operations I would want to know about, and if it's really a Top Secret operation or complete bullshit?"

I'm sorry if I'm necroing but I just can't let this go. Step back from fantasy and into reality for a second. I'm not asking him for his imaginary classified badge, I'm asking why he, a fucking Marine, wouldn't mention anything about his CO, his training, ANYTHING at all when he seems to eager to wave his "I served in super secret missions and survived a million firefights" flag. "CTC in Vietnam". What the fuck is that? Col of what battalion/company/platoon, ANYTHING? Marine program since 12? What, the JROTC? Seriously? Then what? He was drafted into some secret conspiracy army? The Rapid Deployment Force which doesn't include women and is larger than what he said he "Team" was even though that's what he says he was in? Can I get a bone here? He's dodging all these details and being sketchy and vague as hell because it's a felony to fake your military credentials.

In an interview with LatinoGamers on youtube he seems all-too-eager to mention that he's still in the Marines under the status "not under orders" (reservist, which he says is the twilight zone?), and even about talking to soldiers (army) on Fort Lewis. Why is he so suddenly shy about sharing, at the very least, his military rank? Any fucking self-respecting military guy, let alone someone of his alleged rank, wouldn't carry themselves like this. He's just some poser who probably just occasionally visits military bases to peddle his gun knowledge.

I'm not even going to touch upon how silly it is to think that someone who was a part of black ops that supersedes the Navy fucking SEALS or Marine RECON (the "black ops" people of the Marines, why didn't he mention anything about this?) would make themselves public in this fashion (it's unbelievably rare that these guys make themselves public for a reason, this guy is just making a mockery of the real deal out there). Look at who he's advertising to. He promoted his book at GAMESTOP, and held interviews with only gaming media. He's making a total mockery of the REAL military "black ops" guys.

I'm sorry if this is coming off ranty, but I'm begging you to use your common sense and see through this guy's obvious fraud. Go to his site, read some of his stuff (his FAQ and "About", mostly), use a level head, and I'm sure you'll see what I mean. Maybe show this to someone you know in the military and you'll see they'll pretty much burst out laughing.

there are some more "realistic" shooters on the market, but they aren't always the most fun to play

but I do agree that combat games can be made to teach some realistic skills (aside from stuff we already experience now like desensitization and heightened senses)
In my experience, most people would rather run around like complete morons than experience realism.

Not that that's bad. I do it. But I'm not going to join the military. And I'm ESPECIALLY not going to take what I learned in video games to combat, even if I get drafted and my flaming demeanor doesn't get me kicked.

maybe just a game that, instead of making you run around shooting like a fool, actually made you work, use your head and value your achievements and avoid getting shot?
far as i have known most shooter games i've played (COD, FarCry etc) have just been run and gun, no thought included shoot-em-ups.
give the player a useful team, some initiative and a chance to make some decisions and he might actually be able to apply this stuff to his life.
like reading Sun Tzu's art of war, for example. tactics of war can be applied to peace aswell.

For those of you who have questions about Mr. Hammersmith's creds, it appears that he has been outed as a fraud by members of the special operations community. The details can be found here;
