I want a good, fun RTS that isn't StarCraft; can you guys recommend some to me?

Thanks in advance.

Try End War its really fun, unless you like base building and shit, then I'd say the best 3 are Red alert3, Command and Conquer 3, and finaly spore. Spore is surprisingly fun. (thats my opinion if you try to start a war with me about spore eat a shrapnel grenade)

I have finished Spore a grand total of one time, and I thought it was good.

Total Annihilation. It's an oldie but its a goodun. Also try the Spring project which is a game engine based off of TA made by big TA fanbois.

Link:

And you can never go wrong with Dune II.

Also this should probably be on the General Discussion forum.

My favourite RTS is and always has been Age of Mythology. Hell, the Age of X series is all pretty good. Except III, I didn't like that one.

Depends what you like, mate. Heaps of good RTS out there, all with their own quirks and traits.

For sheer polish, go Warcraft III [http://www.blizzard.com/us/war3/] and Frozen Throne [http://www.blizzard.com/us/war3x/].

For sheer fun, I'd go with Red Alert 3 [http://www.commandandconquer.com/portal/site/cnc/cncra3/].

For awesome basebuilding, you're with Total Annihilation [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Annihilation] and/or Supreme Commander [http://www.supremecommander.com/].

For beautiful spaceship action, it's Homeworld 2 [http://homeworld2.sierra.com/homeworld2.jsp].

For spaceships with more complex base management, you play Hegemonia [http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/hegemonia/], or Sins of a Solar Empire [http://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/].

For glorious, violent melees, you play Dawn of War [http://www.dawnofwargame.com/au/home/index].

For quick, tactical, yet complex play, it's Dawn of War II [http://www.dawnofwar2.com/us/home] and/or Company of Heroes [http://original.companyofheroesgame.com/].

For a more abstract singleplayer experience, try Darwinia [http://www.introversion.co.uk/darwinia/] or Dyson [http://www.dyson-game.com/].

For more info on any of the above, hit up YouTube [http://youtube.com.au], Metacritic [http://www.metacritic.com], or Gametrailers [http://www.gametrailers.com].

There are more I've not played, surely with their own appeals, but since I've not, I can't discuss them.

With that in mind, I've played all the ones I've just mentioned, and would recommend them all. Just keep in mind we're talking REAL-TIME Strategy, so I don't want to hear anyone mention Galactic Civilisations in reference to my "more detailed spaceships game" comment.

Though, Anyone should feel free to call me out on those, if they disagree. Discussion is good, guys.

Edit: Oh, and of those, Dyson is free from the linked webpage. Darwinia, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 1 & 2, and Red Alert 3 are all available on Steam [http://www.steampowered.com]. Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander are available on Impulse [http://www.impulsedriven.com/]. If you're buying, try to buy from there. Support the developers.

i would normally say starcraft but you beat me to it

warcraft 3 and its expansion for sure
the Stronghold series is very good, though i like the original and its expansion better than the new ones
Red Alert 3
Total War series is nice for sheer mass carnage

C&C3 is great, I just love it.

Even though it is turn-based you sould look into the Civ series, particularly Civ 4 which was just great.

Im not one for recomendation, since I do not have the ability to dive into your mind and know what you would want in a video game. All I can do is tell you games that I have found enjoyable. In the regard, Warcraft Three and the Frozen Throne Expansion are great addition to any gaming library. And Starcraft is not too shabby, But what I love the most are the Age of Empires series. Espically the second edition in the series, I have spent many happy hours playing that game and its respective expansion. I wholeheartedly recomend it to you Vorpals.

Sins of a Solar Empire. God, I love that game. Probably the only RTS space game that's been pulled off well.

EDIT: Oh, and Homeworld, but that's probably different from what you're looking for.

My two main suggestions would be Dawn of War and Age of Empires II.

The unfortunate thing is that both are now obsolete (DoW less so). Age of Empires III isn't as great in terms of gameplay, in my opinion, but it is better in graphic- and online-wise, so that's a good choice too.

I tried really hard to get into Sins of a Solar Empire, but it just didn't do it for me. I guess it doesn't have the short-term payoff of building a town and winning a battle in a shorter sequence of time, since the game is a bit too epic for my tastes (the last match I bothered playing took five hours... I prefer thirty minutes, but hey). You should check it out anyway, though. You might like it, if you have time to invest.

World in Conflist
Company of Heroes
Dawn of War 1 and expansions
Codename: PANZERS
Blitzkrieg 1 and 2
Hearts of Iron
DEFCON
Close Combat series
Combat Mission series
And there are others, but these are all great.

Soldiers: Heroes of WWII. Little Dated, but the manual control of units is amazing.

It's on Steam.

I don't know, I still find Rise of Nations to be a thoroughly enjoyable RTS, but my computer isn't capable of successfully running much more powerful then that, so there are no doubt other ones I'm missing out on because I can't run them. And, as Berethond said, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth is a great RTS, especially if you are into the LotR series.
