Sins of a Solar Empire is great, if you have the time for it (as has already been said) and Age of Empires II is my personal favourite (right after Starcraft)

I want a good, fun RTS that isn't StarCraft; can you guys recommend some to me?

Thanks in advance.
If you're new to Real Time strategy the only games I can possibly recommend are the classics.
You need to learn to love them before you can respect the genre. That and most of the modern ones suck bung-juice.

Age of Empires 2 was the highest RTS ever because it was really fucking easy. That and Microsoft+Ensemble+sequel.

Warcraft 2 is far more in depth with it's level design and giving the different sides more personalized strengths and weaknesses.

Total Annihilation is about large scale warfare. It takes some getting used to but the end result is very worth it.

Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 in a way mixes the scale of T.A and Warcraft games with the teams having such different strengths but letting you build to your hearts desire huge bases and massive armies. Also it's pretty funny.

If you're beyond all that then just Play Sins of a Solar Empire. Mass marketing and space. Most of my skirmishes end up going for around 6 hours; which I tend to relish.

People, you need to STOP recommending this guy any of the recent Command & Conquer games. As a long time fan of the franchise, I know he could find much better recent RTS other than Command & Conquer 3 and Red Alert 3.

Anyways, I would recommend Sins of a Solar Empire, Dawn of War, or Company of Heroes. I also hear the Total War series is good, but I've never gotten around to trying them.
