Spoilers be ahead.

<spoiler= So it was just revealed that>So it was just revealed that Captain America has been a member of Hydra for DECADES. Ever since he was a child. Apparently, his mother was recruited into Hydra when he was a boy.

The next few series are going to be about Cap keeping his allegiances secret, with only him and the readers knowing he is an agent of Hydra. Yeah, even Hydra doesn't know he's part of Hydra

Am I the only one who thinks this is fucking stupid? Is it just me?

Holy shit, I thought Civil War II was a shoddy decision, but this just takes the cake.

No, you're not the only one. In fact, a cursory google search would reveal to you that the only people who think this is a good idea are the creative team behind the series, who pinky promise swear it's not a gimmick and is totally a sane choice.

Yeah it was brought up in the other thread and I didn't react to it there, let me fix that.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? This is the most asinine thing done to his character since this!

Let's be honest--this will be retconned within a year at most. It will be planned to be, too. It's what they planned all along.

This is just a PR stunt. Shock people with something so insane to get people talking and pay attention to it. Its a stupid idea regardless, but Marvel Comics killed itself in my eyes since Battleworld klled everyone else.

MCU has become my true Marvel universe. But hey, maybe someone will fix it by wishing Aunt May back to life.

You're never the only one but holy Shit, I've never seen this much backlash since...well, ever. I was way too young (indeed, I may not have been born yet) when Hal Jordan went genocidal and changed his name to Parallax and I definitely wasn't alive when The Joker killed Robin but out of those two major controversies, this one just takes the cake. This isn't going to last but it's probably going to do more damage to Cap's more famous arcs and his classic books/appearances. Nice move Marvel, no really[/sarcasm].

It's being done purely for the shock value, but my god, is it the worst possible thing they could've done for shock. This is going to do awful things to Cap's reputation. I've already seen a number of boycotts aimed at the comic, and I don't even follow comic readers - it's just... not going to go as planned.

Hell, even Captain America isn't impressed with it:

What volume is he reading? I mean that's obviously not the issue in question.

I've seen that picture so many times on the this forum, but I still don't know where it came from. The Ultimate universe?

Yeah, I looked around and it is indeed from the Ultimate universe. Personally I thought it was from Civil War, which did a good job of fucking up everyone's characterization.

I mean compare this to the mainstream universe, where Captain America flat out says he doesn't like France surrender jokes, BECAUSE HE FOUGHT ALONGSIDE THE MAQUIS!

The more I read about stuff like this the more vindicated I feel about sticking to other media like the MCU and DCAU for my superhero fix. Seems like every other week there's some "grand reveal" in comics that ends up shitting all over the lore and enraging fans before a series of even more ludicrous retcons returns things to some form of status quo. It's like the folks in charge take some perverse pleasure out of yanking the collective chains of their audience.

You are bad at reading comics if this in any way bothers you.

Obviously Captain America isn't actually a Hydra sleeper agent. Anyone who in any way cares about this is the modern day equivalent of people who got taken in by the 1960's Superman covers with stuff like "Superman reveals his secret identify to the world! Not a hoax! Not a dream! But REAL!" on the cover, where it would inevitably turn out that it was the Superman of an alternate reality or Superman had a machine to wipe everyone's memories once he found out revealing his secret identity was was a bad idea or whatever.

If you read comics at all, you will be aware that this is a brief storyline that'll last maybe six issues before it's revealed that the Red Skull brainwashed Cap (or made Kobik recreate him different when de-aging him) or something along these lines but because Cap is so good he fights it off and punches Red Skull in the jaw.

Hell, this is already hinted at in the very issue in question seeing as the only bit of colour in the black and flashbacks of Cap's childhood are the red colour of the hydra agent who recruited Steve's mother. Seeing as the present day parts put a lot of prominence on the Red Skull being the villain of this arc and seeing as Red Skull acquired powerful telepathic abilities in the last couple of years, I wonder if this could somehow be hinting that Steve's memories and mind have been messed with. Hmmmmmm, what a puzzler.

I'm assuming anyone who is taking the idea of Cap being a Hydra agent seriously seriously doesn't actually read comics at all, because this is all very very obvious stuff for anyone who does read comics and has 2+ braincells.

Okay, I've never even read a single issue of Captain America, and know fuck all about the series, but even from what I do know this sounds like the kind of over the top plot twist that will predictably be undone by some other plot twist.

That's so cringeworthy that I'm skeptical it's even legit.

My instinct is that this is from Ultimate Avengers, which I'm pretty sure was also the one where Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were doing the Jamie and Cersei Lannister thing and Cap was the asshole for pointing out that this probably isn't cool. Mind I don't think anyone came out of Ultimates looking good.

I'm sorry, I didn't know there were levels of skill involved with reading comics.

But there are in movie watching and playing enjoying video games. So why not comics? And books. And music. And enjoying one's food. A "matter of taste" is a sign of weakness, my friend.

Isn't this a joke? Like, wasn't this pretty much in Squirrel Girl as a joke?

But hey, comics are full of awful twists and arcs that even the comic continuities themselves try to forget and move on from. This one is a hilariously stupid idea, but that's about the only thing that makes it stand out.

Ok this just make the big twist to the DC Universe a fantastic and planned out twist!

No seriously this is literally an ass pull from them! You mean all the time from its first publication and the among of time he defeated and arse kicked Hydras, he was in league with them the whole time?

Let not forget that the Red Skull plotted his assassination after Civil War when they could of tell him to stop being a hero???

Well there's goes the American with with Cap!

EDIT-Also this mean the Jokers has more moral then Cap!

Its probably going to turn out this is some alternate Captain America from an alternate timeline or universe (explaining how even Hydra doesn't know he works for them), then original Captain America will come back, punch alternative Captain America in the face a bit and get his good reputation back (in universe, the comics reputation wont be so easy to fix).

There's my prediction, lets wait and see. I just hope nothing like this creeps into the MCU.
