Resonance of Fate? The battle system may be hard to get into, but it's fun.

Lost Odyssey is pretty good.

Though I guess Castle Crashers and Deathspank kind of counts? You level up and can change equipment and such.

I would tell him to relax, breathe, and play some Bioshock to calm his nerves. (joking). Um, I haven't played a good RPG since FFX ruined them for me. (I did like Super Mario RPG and others though...so, yeah.) I would LOVE to see a 360 remake of Dragon Force. That'd be cool.
