Those kinds of films are only enjoyable to some, and effective to nobody. And they've become bankable. Torture Porn is the Rhythm Game of the Horror film genre.
Saw had a very unsettling effect on me. Not the graphic nature of it, just the plausibility really helped draw me in.

The original/japanese version of the Ring.
The original sequel "Raisen" was better than the shitty American sequel "Ring 2".

Two of my favourites are the American adaptation of the Ring (just don't quite the japanaese way of telling a story I suppose) and Event Horizon.

Slither

Evil Dead 1, 2, and Army of Darkness cuz they got some freaky bad ass scenes.

Ringu

[REC] - The original Spaniard version of Quarantine.

Ghoulies

Finally.....One Missed Call - I don't know how scary the original is but I'd recommend watching both.

I agree, classics are highly overrated.

The only horror movie to actually scare me was The Descent, so maybe give that a try.
I loved that movie, but the ending was terrible. I couldn't believe they included
a dream

It didn't end with a dream in the version I watched, she gets monstered by the monsters
Same with me. She was sitting in a diminishing pool of light, sobbing, while the monsters crept closer. Cue, Fade to black. Forever.

Personally, i recommend Dog Soldiers, maybe not that scary a film, but great to watch none the less.

I also vouch for The Thing, Event Horizon, REC and 28 Days Later

First you need to work out what scares you. Is it paranormal activity? Psychological torment? Torture? The unknown? Zombies? Clowns? Dying? Creepy kids? Satanic ritual? Zombie clowns? What movies you find scary will entirely depend on this. (I once had someone recommend me some shitty movie about a Ouija board all because they were terrified of Ouija boards. Needless to say the movie was terrible).

Here are some recommendations but you'll need to work out what you find scary first to truly be recommended something you like -

The Mist - Not scary but well made.

Session 9 - Again, not that scary but different and might be the 'bit different' thing you're looking for.

Night of the Living Dead - The original, the classic. NOT the crappy 20th anniversary bullshit. NEVER watch that. Only get the original uncut film.

Audition - Again, 'a bit different'. You certainly won't forget it.

Jacob's Ladder - Creepy, a bit dated, but well made.

The Omen (original) - Slow and dated but made with conviction. If you see it when you're young enough it will stay with you.

The Exorcist (original) - The special effects let it down big time these days and the start is very slow but the building of dread in the middle part is very well done.

Poltergeist - It's old, it's PG, so it puts a lot of people off. But there is a sense of malice that comes through toward the end. The main girl died in real life during the third film and although both sequels suck there is an amazingly creepy preacher, performed by a guy dying of cancer (as they were filming) in the second film.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) - Not so much scary as disturbing. Way more so than the remake which attempts to explain everything and end on a positive note.

Also - The Thing, The Descent, Evil Dead 2, The Host (monster movie that is not scary but different), The Ring, American Werewolf in London (more funny than scary, occasionally disturbing, good film).

The Brood is pretty scary and is a really good film.

Shivers is a really good film and a great horror.

The Fly is generally an excellent film.
Wow, yes! The Brood and the Fly are tops on my list.

Recently The House of the Devil has been one of my favorites (80's style throw back horror) and I enjoyed Halloween 2 (remake version) but I feel as though I might be in the minority on that one.

My favorite horror movies as of recent:

The Hills Have Eyes( Alexandre Aja's remake, the sequel is rubbish)
The Strangers
The Descent
The Collector was fun if you don't get caught up in the details
The Crazies for the zombie fanatics
Funny Games is excellent
Quarantine

and "Let The Right One In" is an amazing film on a different level than these others.

Lol at all of these "The ____" titles.

The most brilliant psyhcological horror/thriller I've seen is George Sluizers Spoorloos.

I warmly recommend it. If all goes right, you'll be scarred for life.
BUT - avoid the american remake at all costs; "The Vanishing".
All subtlety was removed in favour of a friendlier climax.
Are there subtitles available? I'll watch things in any language, even moon-language, but I it's a bit hard without a sub.
There are subtitled copies around, absolutely. It's quite an acclaimed piece of work, though not as widely distributed as it ought to have been.

REC is pretty good, but I didn't find it scary TBH. There's a second one as well... Maybe there will be the third movie, but then again, who knows. The end did somewhat leave an impression, that it's not the end of the story.

So maybe you should wait for the 3rd film(if there is one), to get the whole story at one service, I know I'd like it that way. I just generally dislike waiting for a sequel, but that's just me.

If your claustrophobic that is, watched this with a friend at midnight, its the claustrophobia plus the horror plus the blair witch camera style that makes this movie have a very solid atmoshphere. Blair witch was pretty good also. Paranormal activity.

Wait wait wait here me out. Watch paranormal activity. Then on the same day, i want you to turn off all the lights and sit in a room in complete silence by yourself, alone right in the middle of the room with all the doors and windows closed, in your bed if need be. I then want you to talk to talk to the "entity" if you hear any sounds. Give it half an hour. If you arnt shitting yourself by then there is something wrong with you.

While not on par visually with a lot of other movies here, I'd recommend checking out Ginger Snaps. It's really well made and very entertaining. As for the plot, it's basically the movie Jennifer's Body ripped off shamelessly, except good and without megan fox. So +2 there.
