Recommend a good horror film.

Watch the German dub of anything!
(I kid, of course, German is a beautiful and expressive language.)

I agree, classics are highly overrated.

The only horror movie to actually scare me was The Descent, so maybe give that a try.
I loved that movie, but the ending was terrible. I couldn't believe they included
a dream
Apparently, there's two different endings - the original, where it turns out she was dreaming, and the edited version where the movie cuts out before she wakes up so it looks like she really made it out.

I saw the original and, though not great from a story point of view, it was a good way to lure you into a false sense of security before the final scare.

I really liked 'Trick 'r Treat'. It's by no means a slasher film, and has it's own little contribution to Halloween mythology. I'm even going to make it a Halloween tradition to show it at my house.

Really worth checking out.

While not on par visually with a lot of other movies here, I'd recommend checking out Ginger Snaps. It's really well made and very entertaining. As for the plot, it's basically the movie Jennifer's Body ripped off shamelessly, except good and without megan fox. So +2 there.
ginger snaps came out first around 2000

Aliens has been mentioned a some times in this thread. I don't understand how anyone born 1990> could possibly be scared by that movie unless it's the first horror/remotely scary flick they've ever watched. The scare factor becomes pretty measly when you've seen it a billion times in a billion different incarnations already.

OT: I love 28 Days Later, it truly is an awesome movie. The sequel would be as great if not for its glaring plot-holes.
I can imagine that you've seen The Exorcist already, but for me that's what's given me the most baggage, if getting truly scared is what you're after.
I'll also recommend Event Horizon, which I just finished watching. That movie is one great easter egg if you're a fan of Warhammer 40K lore as well. Good stuff.

Eraserhead - I don't know if it will give you any sleepless nights, but it's got some pretty fucked up shit going on.
The (original) Texas Chainsaw Massacre - In my opinion it's still the scariest horror movie out there.
Paranormal Activity - If you're into the handycam horror. It certainly gave me a sleeples night or two.

The Shining is unnerving more than terrifying, but remains one of my favourite thanks to my love of Kubrick.

The Orphanage will put you off children for good.

28 Days Later is a pretty intense but intelligent film with characters that are interesting as opposed to the typical dim walking blood-bags that populate most of modern ?horror? for no particularly good reason.

Alien should be watched by anyone who thinks they like horror, more of an education than anything else; ?that scene? in the first film is one talking green frog away from Jim Henderson production where all the niceness has been replaced with blood. Also, though I?m sure this will be disputed, the rest of the quadrilogy (Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection) is worth a look ? Aliens replaces its predecessor?s pre-monster chit-chat with explosions, while also adding an interesting theme of The Mother that juxtaposes nicely with the violent and viral connotations associated with the aliens (?Get away from her, you *****!? ? Alien 3, though flawed is interesting just as an insight into the pre-Se7en days of David Fincher ? Likewise, despite being yet more flawed, Alien Resurrection can provide some entertainment in the novelty that this guns-blazing matcho gun-fest was directed by the Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who followed the project with Alemie!

Those kinds of films are only enjoyable to some, and effective to nobody. And they've become bankable. Torture Porn is the Rhythm Game of the Horror film genre.
Saw had a very unsettling effect on me. Not the graphic nature of it, just the plausibility really helped draw me in.
Really? As a stand-alone film, Saw 1 was an alright experiment, but after that the whole genre just got ridiculous. Especially after they killed-off Jigsaw.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but Planet Terror is great. One of my favourite zombie movies.
