Check out R-Point. It's a Korean horror movie with a little Vietnam War twist. That movie tripped me out.
Seconded R point is an awesome movie, and a real head trip.
Dead snow/Dod sno is a great Norwegian zombie nazi film. And who doesn't love Nazi zombie's.
And as some others have said 28 days/weeks.
Reaalllly recommend R point though. And being an anime fan you shouldn't mind the subs. In fact I'm gonna go watch it now.

Someone posted Splinters already so i have to find something else... Slither is a good bet, although its not scary so much as hilarious; seriously, if there are any evil dead fans out there that havent seen it yet, I highly recommend it! Yeah i got nothing that is really scary, mostly because no movie has actually scared me since the original Night of the Living Dead... that shit is terrifying when you're 5, thanks a lot Dad. Undead is another hilarious one, from the Aussies. oh, and Black Sheep (not the chris farley one) from the Kiwis is dammed funny too! Enjoy

A lot of people have said The Thing. That is a great horror film. Poltergeist always gets me when I watch it. That clown doll, oh man. Who buys stuff like that for their children? I'm also partial to An American Werewolf in London, or The Howling (part 2 is the best imo, marsupial werewolves, freaking awesome!) If you want to go for something a little different, not so much scary as really interesting, Let the Right One In is a great vampire flick. It does have some creepy moments, but it is a satisfying film.

How long before Furburt suggests Evil Dead?

Try REC.

Starts out as a pretty standard Cloverfield/Blair Witch take on the zombie genre, but the end...

Fuck, shit me right up and horror doesn't normally bother me.

Heh heh. I still need to see that one. The fact that the movie actually had someone crap themself with fear during the New Zealand premiere says it all. http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/13452

Like several people have already pointed out, REC is a good one. The ending really creeped me out.
My older brother showed the movie to me, at first i was thinking that it was a stupid movie about some Spanish girl doing some boring film about other people. But then it got interesting. And to say again, the ending was really disturbing. But good :D.

Yeah, watch it. Tough i don't get one thing, i quite clearly remember the actors speaking Spanish, and it had English subs. Or am I just confusing it with something else?

Hmmm...House of 1000 corpses and its sequel The Devil's Rejects.
got 1000 Corpses, cool film, didn't like Rejects.
Really, I preffered rejects. Well I would have really liked 1000 corpses but the end was so ridiculous with the hallway made of bones and shit it totally killed the whole film for me. Seriously? Rejects was allot better I personally thought.

Seriously Watch The Brood as I said originally it is damn scary.
The Brood made in 1979/1980? can get it for £3.85, think i'll give it a go

any suggestions?
My suggestion is leave American productions out. Try Japanese ones like Machine Girl or Tokyo Gore police if you want something bloody (warning: extremely fucked up movies, they mess with your belief in humanity) and go for the French and Scandinavian titles like Martyrs, High Tension, or Inside if you want something on a more psychological basis. The ones I proposed to you are bloody as well, but they offer more than gore.

If you absolute must watch an American production go for Sublime and I've heard good stuff of the Jack Ketchum stories, even though I have neither read one of his books nor have I watched one of the films.

"Jacobs Ladder" is pretty damn good!
And "Dead Snow"... As a norwegian I feel it is my duty to promote it! It´s not the best movie ever but it is entertaining
in a frozen zombie nazi sort of way.

The Evil Dead trilogy (or at least the first one)
Drag Me to Hell (Movie Bob recommends it but I hate the ending and how it came to that.)

Dang all of mine were mentioned already. Here's one that I don't think was mentioned:

Warp back in time and watch the Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a six year old, followed promptly by It.

I think I may have been a better person if those movies hadn't happened to me at such an age.

I agree, classics are highly overrated.

The only horror movie to actually scare me was The Descent, so maybe give that a try.
The descent actually scared me a bit, which is odd for a movie.

however, OP, if you want a good horror movie that isn't actually scary, i would recommend 30 days of night. i thought it was very fun.

I'm surprised no one mentioned "Jacob's Ladder". That's one of my favorites despite it's age. It just bombarded you with mind-fucks and disturbing imagery. Much better than your typical "Boo scares" of modern horror.

"The Ring" was surprisingly good. Kept me nice and creeped out throughout. Maybe a niche thing, you may or may not like it. If you liked "The Ring 2", you're retarded though. Most disappointing sequel ever.

"The Blaire Witch Project" was quite good. Don't let the fact that it was over-hyped when it came out fool you. I wanted to hate it, and it's approach to horror was so subtle that I actually overlooked it at first. If you're not willing to give the movie a chance, you can easily watch the whole thing and say "Pfft, nothing ever happened! Worst movie ever!"

When you do give it a chance, however, you notice the subtle things that don't quite add up and they are quite freaky to behold. May take a few watches for the less observant folks.

It's definitely one of those "When you see it, you'll shit bricks" moments.
