The original FFT on PSP is fantastic.
Except for the brutal learning curve and the battle that is literally unwinnable if you don't have the correct skills and equipment, which you need to farm in order to get.

Go for Tactics Advance on the GBA and DS instead.
Don't listen to this man. Every FFT game except the original ps1 title and psp remake are awful. I'm sure he's speaking of the 1v1 battle with Wiegraf (because if not, he's delusional) and the only thing you need to know about this fight is make sure you have the auto potion ability set to Ramza.

Grats. Simple as that. In addition to that there's no need to farm beyond the regular leveling up points you should get to that point. As a matter of fact however, I enjoyed grinding in that game and did it for fun. Strange, I know.

I maintain the FFT is one of the best games ever made and I don't really get into jrpgs at all. It's got a killer storyline and so deep it's daunting gameplay. Whereas the first tactics advance game opened with a snowball fight.

Told me pretty much all I needed to know about it.
Why yes I was talking about the Wiegraf duel. Tvtropes.com has multiple negative references to this battle, including Unwinnable, That One Boss, Guide Dang It, and Suspicious Video Game Generosity (because it gives you a save point after the previous battle, which goes attacca into the duel...but if you don't have the required ability, you just screwed yourself by saving).

Plus the learning curve is horrendous, as I mentioned. I slaved for a week over the first few missions because after about the second, they become ridiculously stacked against you, almost to the point of unfairness. Then I realized THAT WAS JUST THE PROLOGUE. HOLY SHIT.

Maybe I'm just not hardcore enough, I guess.

Perhaps. I will admit that that fight made me start the game over though but that's only because I had not learned the most important of video game rules.

"Have multiple save files".

Once that school of hard video game knocks had drilled it's wisdom into my head all was well with the world. I still think it's one of the best game ever. And oh god, the story.

Sword of the Stars, It plays like a Joe Haldeman novel. What with realisticish space travel and huge tech and ship trees. it has homeworld style battles but they can be auto resolved.

Worth a look.

R-Type Command is my second favorite turnbased game after the original FFT, each unit has a lot it can do on the Earth side at least... makes gameplay very dynamic.

We should be seeing an awesome sequel sometime too, it's already available in Japan.
