I love the genre and I want to get better at it or at least tie myself down to one. I have played alot and I own a few, but I was just wondering if the Escapists can help me pick one. I'm free game for any kind (although I am limited by the lack of 360,or PS3). And I also happen to have Street Fighter 4 and Guilty Gear XX: #Reload right beside me.

So, what do you think I should try out(for the Wii,PS2,PC, or older)? or can I get a good reason to reinstall those 2 PC fighters I have?

[sub]Also if it helps, I love fighters who primarly use their legs/feet, or on occasion, grapplers, in fighting games[/sub]

Reinstall SF4, and own noobs with Chun-Li, Queen of Speeding Legs.

Or find and play BlazBlue, for the weird spectacle.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2: Millionaire EO (Greatest fighting game I've ever played).
Also, coming out next year: Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Mortal Kombat 9 (Which, according to a friend who played it, is fucking amazing.) I don't know what platforms they are for, however.

Well I, personally speaking, have always loved the Soul Calibur series, but I realize that people who like the more hardcore fighting games don't tend to like Soul Calibur as much. Still, it might be worth a try?

Due to the hardware limitations I will recommend Arcana Heart.

But I'd honestly recommend getting a PS3 if you want to start playing fighting games. Blazblue is the best possible fighting game I could recommend.

...I cannot believe I was beaten to recommending that. o_O

But yes, if you have a PS2, I strongly recommend it. It's quite a deep game, gameplay-wise, and has been one of my favorites since I first played it in the arcades in Japan.

...I wanna play AH3 so badly. Or even AH2 again...

Haha I know my fighters. ;)

Also OP if you can get your hands on a Jap PS2 import a copy of Melty Blood: Actress Again. It's sooo awesome. Here's a vid showcasing my favorite fighter, Ryougi Shiki.

Soul Calibur II for gamecube is probably the only Soul Calibur game I can stand. Granted, Soul Calibur III for PS2 wasn't bad, but when my brother's memory card got corrupted, I couldn't save anything anymore and it pissed me off.

Smash Bros. is a good fighter for nintendo consoles. You can even download mods for them (at least for Brawl) online if you have an SD card and free time to try it out. Makes Brawl WAY more fun.

On that note, if you have free time, you could always try your luck with Mugen Fighter for your PC. Totally customizable if you know what you're doing so the array of characters, movesets, locations, etc is quite close to endless.

That looks almost exactly like Guilty Gear/Melty Blood, only a lot more silly, and with more boobs? o-O could u describe the fighting system or maybe some of the characters to choose from? (because it looks neat enough to try) and I would get a PS3 if I could, my budget is just kind of hindered and will be for the next little while though

EDIT: Also I have tried Melty Blood for the PC, i did like it but well...Neutral Drow sort of knows how that one turned out.

my vote is for the bloody roar series (ps1 and ps2), being able to take a different form with slightly different/more powerful moves makes for interesting strategy.

Well there's 11 fighters to choose from. Each has their own abilities but after you select a fighter you choose an arcana for them which determines their special moves. So you start out mixing and matching until you find a character and arcana combo you like. Gameplay is indeed very combo intensive like GG but it's the diversity between characters and arcana that keeps it fresh. Give it a shot at least.

SF4 really IS that good. I still play it online on my ps3 from time to time. Used to be a mad arcade shark when SF2 first hit the arcades and the new one really holds up.

I would like to play Blazblue though. I've little doubt to it's quality.

You ever tried Fate/Unlimited Codes?

Allow me to swamp you with info.

Character selection takes place on two levels: picking a character, and picking an arcana. The characters work like you'd expect from a 2D fighter like Melty Blood. Regarding your small stipulation at the beginning, this isn't a weapon fighter, and technically only two characters use weapons primarily (Kamui and Fiona). Oh, and Kira is an...<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqgWkdrS5W4>unconventional grappler character (she's also an 11 year-old genius megalomaniac, so I love her...even though I prefer playing as Fiona).

The arcana system is one of the two things that sets the game apart, in my opinion. As I said, you select an arcana (basically, a patron elemental spirit) during character selection, which has four types of effect on combat.

Most obviously, they add to your movelist; choosing Partinias (arcana of Love) adds a lot of projectiles and a projectile reflector, while Dieu Mort (arcana of Death) adds a poisoning projectile and teleports. They also tend to have passive effects; using Tempestas (arcana of Wind) allows a character to triple-jump and double-air dash (as opposed to double and single, respectively) and turns your forward guard-cancel into a pushback rather than a dash forward, while Bhanri (arcana of Lightning) adds clash frames to your charged attacks and dashes.

Activating Arcana Force (storywise, magically bringing the fight into the spirit world; gameplaywise, it also serves as a once-per-round combo breaker) adds two more things. Active effects happen (while you have super bar left), so for example Niptra (arcana of Water) makes you stop taking chipping damage, while Moriomoto (arcana of Plants) makes you start regenerating health. Finally, each arcana has a unique Arcana Blaze super that can only be activated in this mode; these can be either attacks (Orichalkos, the Metal arcana and a huge dragon, rains fire down on the screen, and Lang Gong, Arcana of Fire and a wolf, charges the opponent) or other assorted effects (Anutpada, arcana of Time, freezes time momentarily, while Gier, arcana of Shadow, grabs and temporarily turns the opponent into a harmless shadow creature).

The other thing that sets the game apart for me is the multi-purpose Homing button. At its most basic, it makes you charge through the air at your opponent, but it can also be used for guard canceling (forward or back) and homing cancels (letting you reset combos or pursue knocked-back opponents). Some arcanas also add different effects (Ohtsuchi, the Earth arcana, adds super armor to certain dashes for instance).

There's also stuff like clash frames (which are more extensive that in most fighting games I've seen), but I've spoken enough.

EDIT: Also I have tried Melty Blood for the PC, i did like it but well...Neutral Drow sort of knows how that one turned out.
"Sort of" being the operative descriptor. I know how it turned out, I'll just never understand.

If you're looking for a different type of Fighting game, look for a Ps1 game called "Bushido Blade". This game has made me cross my arms at any game that does not have a block button that WORKS WHEN YOU HOLD IT DOWN~! I.E: ALL OF THEM! (With the exception of SF and MK).

Bushido blade, as Ps1-Cardboard as it is, and being released in 1997, is quite possibly the most realistic fighting game to date.

The big gimmick here was that there isn't a health Bar, no time limit, just you, and whoever you're fighting. Body damage. This means, if I slash your arm with my sword, you have to use your weapon 1 handed. If I swipe at your legs, you have to crawl around on the ground pathetically and try to fight back. AND THE BLOCK BUTTON WORKS.

A fight could either go on forever, attack-block-attack-block-attack-block-attack-block-, or it could end anime-style: Run-slash-dead.

6 characters, and 8 weapons to choose from. (The secret unlock-able character has a gun :p)

tl;dr: Bushido Blade.

Mortal Kombat 3/4. Both are the best in thte series in my own opinion. Try to find Bloody Roar too. It's like MK but with a PANDA!

For P.C....eh...thats a tad hard...but i would say any and ALL street fighter games...plus im not 100% sure if they have it on the P.C, but Blazblue (though great, not as good as S.F, check up S.F first) and if you want you can actually buy it for the p.s.p i believe
Like I said in my opening post, I have SF4, and I like it(the online kind of pisses me off from time to time), but I really want SSF4...but Capcom doesn't want to release it for PC cause the original got pirated so much....and apparently there is a Blazblue PC port..but its only available in Europe (lives in Canada)

I really wanted to try Fate/Unlimited Codes. Had all intentions of importing it for PSP. Then my PSP bricked itself. What a terrible day.

Try pick up one of the japanese (translated or not) fighting games based on animes. The naruto ultimate ninja (3 and above) are awesome. Also there is one more out that really stood out but I forgot its name (sry).

Yeah, look for anime based fighting games (such as the Bleach one) some of them are REALLY good.

I got it a while back for my PSP off the PSN and it's a pretty fun game that is really easy to get into. It's another combo intensive game, but you can easily win without doing 10+ hit combos, and the control scheme is a little more dumbed down than other fighters. My only real complaints with he game was:

1) story mode is kind of meh, it's your standard "win 10 matches with bits of dialogue in between", and I didn't find it as interesting as other fighting game story modes. I only found myself going through it over and over to unlock characters and survival mode and all that jazz.

2) No damage scaling. This isn't a really bad thing, but I prefer my combo intensive fighters to have damage scaling. I remember plaything through Assassins story mode and Berseker was a pain in the ass due to his absurd damage. On the bright side though you can sort of scale the damage in the options so hits will either do more or less. It's a type of damage scaling, but not the type i prefer like in GG or BB.

Aside from that it's pretty fun and fast. Love Assassin, Rider, and Sabre :)
