I feel that japanese games get an unfair press on the escapist, partially due to people regurgitating zp. I've never played a jrpg and want to see how they hold up. Please don't post unless you have played one of these games (even for earthbound and paper mario).

Edit: btw you can include other genres apart from rpgs, it's just the term jprg is easiest when talking about the style.

I'll be nailed to a cross for this, but once you've played one Final Fantasy, you've played all of them. Try FFX.

I tried one once (don't know which, prob around 10). I though 7 was meant to be best.

Tales of Vesperia - is an excellent game, great characters, story and combat - a must buy for all RPG fans.

Infinite Undiscovery : http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.118412

Eternal Sonata : http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.117357#2218120

The Last Remnant : http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.118942

Blue Dragon : Pretty decent, but if you've already played Lost Odyssey it won't be as enjoyable.

Star Ocean : I haven't played enough to comment; its not great, but not bad so far.
As for the older games:

. Secret of Mana, any Final Fantasy, Star Ocean : Second evolution, Chrono Trigger.

Valkyrie Chronicles is pretty good, other than that there is of course Final Fantasy. I'd recommend you play FF7 and FF9 first. Other than that, No More Heroes? Yahtzee liked it so it can't be to bad.

Im not into JRPG,mostly because they all look like kids with silly hair swinging large weapons for no obvious reasons, but if you are gonna try em try FF,my mate wont stop talking about it.

OR buy a nice western rpg and have some fun
Read above: don't post unless you've played. I have played western rpgs and they're not perfect either (morrowind springs to mind). I want a look at the flipside of the coin.

Wish I could (as well as Killer 7 but I don't have a GC). Problem is I'm in New Zealand and I don't think I've ever seen it here. Still, better keep an eye out.

What platform we talking?

Im re-playing through Final Fantasy IX (spent 12 hours yesterday as I was hungover, pretty much wasted that day) at the moment but I think thats just nostalgia that I like it. I did enjoy Chrono Trigger on DS though, and the Final Fantasy IV remake, didn't play either of those as a kid and I liked them.

Among others, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, and Final Fantasy VI all have something going for them. Especially that first one. So...

Gamecube - Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos (turn off the voices)
SNES - FF6
PS2 - Tales of the Abyss, Kingdom Hearts

Just limiting it to things I've played and that come immediately to mind.

Persona 3 and 4 are really worth playing, not perfect but some of they are still some of my favourite games I have played. It is probably best to play 3 first while the stories are not connected (though the share the same world) the game play improvements in 4 would make it hard to play 3 second without a lot of irritation. Neither of these games are typical jrpgs so if you are looking for some thing more along that lines I would hold off, but there are very few jrpgs I would say where anywhere near as good.

I don't mind if they're not typical. After all if a western rpg was just typical it would likely get overlooked.
To everyone, it's not just restricted to rpgs (i just thought that it would be a better title than 'japanese game')

Pretty much any. I have a wii and a ds (not a fanboy) so that covers quite a few of them.
Golden Sun, as said above, is a great series...

Well, if you insist... *crucifies*

The thing about JRPGs is that the Japanese really like strategic battle systems, rather than that much action. Kojima's an exception, of course, and I believe that Twin Snakes is a gamecube game...

I kinda think that way too. Not to say I don't like action but sometimes I want a bit more strategy than most action games can offer (including rts which just seems to involve picking the right units and lots of them)

Oh yes and i'd better help Yuzzi down.

Well, Chrono Trigger is pretty much a given. Golden Sun is as well.

In addition to those, there's Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA) and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS), which are very high quality JRPGs, in my books.

There are also several old Final Fantasy games remade for DS, just like Chrono Trigger. Worth a look. Finally, there is Final Fantasy Tactics A2 for the DS. It's more a Tactical RPG than anything, but it is fantastic.

And, since I'm already espousing a Tactical RPG, take a look at the Fire Emblem series. Available to you are:
Fire Emblem 7 (GBA)
Fire Emblem 8: The Sacred Stones (GBA)
Fire Emblem 9: Path of Radiance (GC)
Fire Emblem 10: Radiant Dawn (Wii)
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS, it's actually the first Fire Emblem remade for DS)

The Fire Emblem series features several hours of solid and challenging gameplay. Worth looking into if they appeal to you. While probably not what you were thinking when you said JRPG, they're close enough to be worth a mention.
