I'm playing 'Lost Odyssey' at the moment and it's not too bad. Your opponents are challenging and the fighting system is slightly more intuitive than most JRPG's, but there is SO MUCH DIALOGUE. Luckily you do have the option to skip it all ;D

But I've only played 1/4 disks so far. I have a long long long way to go.

i found 9 the best imo anyway, Mainly cause I loved Vivi's story
I wouldn't call it the best, but Vivi's subplot was absolutely wonderful. Existential despair has never been so touching.

Final Fantasy VII and X
Kingdom Hearts (after you've played FF, they go hand in hand)
I hear good things about Last Remnant
Golden Sun series (I think that's JRPG)

The only ones I play are Mother 2 (Earthbound), Mother 3 and Pokemon.

I have a feeling that if we get enough Mother fans they'll bring the series to Europe and America.

No mention of Paper Mario? All three games are good but Thousand-Year Door for the Gamecube currently stands out as it's apex.
I also recommend Wild Arms, but don't play the most recent ones (4 and 5, although they have the best battle system) if hyperactive, repetitive voice acting and simple plots annoy you.
And yes, if you're going to try an FF make it FFX. The best 3D one by far, and quite accessible to newbies (to the point where as an FF veteran I found the battle tutorials kind of annoying).

I though 7 was meant to be best.
This kind of ignorance is what prevents people finally leaving that game alone.

Not calling you ignorant specifically, more the general idea that FF7 was the best FF.

Basically FF7 is the game most people remember fondly mainly because it was the first FF most people played. As an FF game it is actually one of the worst, a huge dip from FF6. The only two games I was more disappointed with in the main series were FF8 and FFX-2. Many other people will reflect this (if they haven't drowned under the fanboyism of 7).
I just meant that 7 is the one i've seen most people sing praises for, whether they were nostalgia or not. However the general consensus on this thread seems to point towards FFX at the moment.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana for SNES. You will not regret it.
I don't think Secret of mana is a jrpg but every rpg fan thinks highly of it (i could be wrong though).

I'm not a JRPG fan myself... but there are a few that I can highly recommend... unfortunately, they're all old games.. I have no interest in the Final Fantasy types.

Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore (this is HIGHLY underrated)
Soul Blazer series (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia *best*, Terranigma)
Chrono Trigger

The Mother trilogy (Mother/EarthBound Zero: NES, Mother 2/EarthBound: SNES, Mother 3: GBA) However, you'd have to emulate them. Mother and Mother 3 were Japan only releases, and to buy EarthBound it could possibly run you up to $100.

Other than that, Chrono Trigger (SNES/DS), Kingdom Hearts (PS2) and Super Mario RPG (SNES).

I feel that japanese games get an unfair press on the escapist, partially due to people regurgitating zp. I've never played a jrpg and want to see how they hold up. Please don't post unless you have played one of these games (even for earthbound and paper mario).

Edit: btw you can include other genres apart from rpgs, it's just the term jprg is easiest when talking about the style.
If you have a Super Nintendo, look into Lufia 2. It's really good. Lufia one's enjoyable, too.

CHRONO TRIGGER.

If you haven't played that game, do yourself a favor and buy it. The DS remake came out recently.
