if your looking for great story based games, i would suggest persona 4 and the dot hack GU trilogy (make sure its GU, the others are ok but arnt as refined...also, the dot hack games are kinda hard to come by but it can be done).

for a more action based game, i would recommend star wars: battlefront 2.

They couldn't be more right. Persona4 is by far my favorite game of any console generation to date, and shadow of the collosus, well, its shadow of the collosus, what else do you need to know?

Not sure if anyone else knows of it, but Sniper Elite, or Elite Sniper can't remember which way around it was, was one of the best I ever played. Don't think it got any of the recognition it deserved either

Metal Gear Solid 3

I know.. I know... the avatar seems a bias.. but I'm serious.... I had my doubts.. then I played MGS3 from around noon until about ~4am almost nonstop... and beat it in one sitting.. the game was that addicting.

If you haven't played the previous games.. MGS1 & MGS2... AND REMEMBER.. this is coming from a guy that generally has ZERO interest in Japanese games.

Other than that... if you disregard my great recommendation..

Devil May Cry 1 & 3 (skip #2, it has no impact/continuity at all and sucks)
The Legacy of Kain series (Blood Omen 1 & 2; Soul Reaver 1 & 2; LoK: Defiance).
God of War 1 & 2
Resident Evil 4

All winners

Both, definitely.
Get the FES version of Persona 3. It has an entire extra story and is normally cheaper. (No idea why"

Been said many times but definitely ICO and Shadow of Colossus. They're pretty much the only reason I still have my PS2. Can't wait for the HD remake collection. Also Sniper Elite, Chaos Legion, Drakengard and Star Ocean: Til the End of Time.

EDIT: Good luck finding them but the .hack games are awesome, the old ones though. New ones are OK too I guess.

Mmm, good call. The original has art and music (and I'm a sucker for game soundtracks), but FES has more content (and thusly is better than the original Persona 3).

Also:

This guy is right on the money. And I'd add Timesplitters: Future Perfect to that list as well.

I could list some games, and I will, but I will say this. PS2 games are so cheap these days, you might as well buy it if you like the look of it.

With the exception of certain sought after titles (your Okamis, SOTCs and Persona, for example), most pre-owned PS2 games have a market value of around 50p to £1, £2 at most. While all these recommendations are good, worth trying and all, one of the coolest things about playing PS2 is being able to scour boot fairs, charity shops, etc, and coming home with something you've never heard of, spent 50p on, and turns out to be awesome. I guess that's just what I like.

I recommend:
Odin Sphere - beautiful high-res sprite art in a 2D side-scrolling brawler with interlocking stories all about Valkyries, developed by Atlus
Maximo - very hard 3D platformer remake of Ghosts 'n' Goblins
Forbidden Siren - uncanny valley facial animation second-sight horror game
Dragon Quest - Best. JRPG. Ever
