If you want something relatively low key...

Spice and Wolf

If you want something fun but occasionally melodramatic...

Angel Beats

If you want something that is depressing, but also funny and displays character growth..

Welcome to the NHK

Darker than Black tries to be dark and edgy, but ends up pretty tame and... slow at the times.

After the awesome intro ("Now I've lost it. I know I can kill!") you're totally pumped up for a fast-paced rampage of revenge, but most of the time, the show itself is pretty quiet.

If you're looking for an anime that delivers and keeps delivering from the first minute, pierce the wall of the nearest anime store with your drill and make off with the complete series of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!

Hmm, well, the only thing I can think of that both isn't on the list or in any of the preceding posts is Trigun.
Anyhow, it's about An outlaw, with a gazillion dollar bounty, and a desire to not kill anyone, despite the fact that pretty much everyone is trying to kill him.
It starts out less than serious, but gets more grim a few episodes in.

Anyway it's available here [http://www.hulu.com/trigun] and here [http://www.youtube.com/show/trigun] as well as on netflix.

I've got an option that no-one's suggested yet: Try Outlaw Star:

It's heavy on the sci-fi, but has magical elements to it. For example, the main character has something called a "Caster Gun", which fires bullets of magic. And the bad guys are space pirates, who use Tao Magic.

Plus, it has spaceship battles, where the spaceships have giant robot arms, and fight with machine guns and swords. It's got alot of action in it. What's NOT to like?

Damn you!

You broke my nostalgia meter!

Oh Aisha....one of my first cartoon crushes....DON'T JUDGE ME!! o_O

The World God Only Knows, Rurouni Kenshin, Gurren Laggan, Katawa no Maid-sama..

Those are all very good and valid choices.

I saw a lot of series that I've watched/read. Based on that, I'd recommend History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. It's pretty good.

Personally, I read manga more than I watch anime. If you're interested in a pretty good manga, take a look at my avatar. He's Jio Freed from 666 Satan (aka O-Part's Hunter). I've heard there is talk of making an anime based on it, but I have no idea if how serious it is.

Ok, it's not the best anime, but if you want something completely and totally fucking ridiculous and at the same time simple, go for the anime Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo in case you've never heard of it/seen it before. Craziest anime concept I've ever seen, even though it gets very weird at times. There's quite a few references to real stuff, and most of the ideas are good, but some are executed poorly. If you can forgive that, it is pretty good and I've re-watched it 2-3 times.

Mawaru Penguin Drum:It is ongoing but will be finished in two weeks. Basic premise is 2 brothers are attempting to save their sister from an incurable disease and set in modern day. Starts out as a search for the Mcguffin but slowly goes off the rails(in a good way) with relationships being twisted around, attempts to change the world, and a diary that can alter fate. The show also has a great sense of humor mostly through the weird little background plot with the penguins only the siblings and select others can see.If it sounds awesome go watch it or if my description makes it sound stupid go watch it anyway becasue I tend to make things sound awful.

I'll 3rd/4th Stein's Gate it's damn good but avoid it's predecessor Chao's Head, it's not so good.

You might have already seen it but Chrno Crusade is not bad, the action's good, it's set in the roaring twenties and it moves at a brisk pace. I'd say more about it but it's been a while since I've seen it and and don't remember much.

For Comedy. Nerima Daikon Brothers. It's a very silly show about a band trying to raise money to build a dome to perform in. They try and fail to accomplish this through growing Daikon and taking down evil doers and stealing their cash. Their are only about 5 or 6 different songs with switched up lyrics but they usually work. It can be a bit formulaic(even the show lampshades it) but it's still very enjoyable.

Thanks, Kenichi really hit the mark for me. I needed a break from reality really bad, and kenichi is providing a very good one.

Glad to help. I'm not sure how far the anime goes, but the manga is still ongoing. If it follows it far enough you should see some really awesome fights with his masters getting involved. Those get pretty insane.

If you don't mind reading, I'd really like to recommend 666 Satan again. It's written by Seishi Kishimoto. If that name sounds familar, its because he's the twin brother of Masashi Kishimoto, the writer of Naruto. Personally, I think it's better than Naruto, though. That says a lot, considering that I actually like Naruto.

Gurren Lagann, definitely check out Gurren Lagann. Giant robots, lighthearted tone but serious when it needs to be, no filler, great characters and action so ridiculous it becomes amazing.

Since you have seen a pretty fair amount of anime you might enjoy Excel Saga. Each episode tends to be a parody of another anime or popular anime tropes. It is funny on occasion and almost always crazy and worth a watch for anyone that has even a minor knowledge of the genre.

If you want some classic Action try.

Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star)

They released the whole series on DVD box sets and the movie over the past few years.

Also,The first thirty-six episodes of season one are the only parts of the series that are dubbed. The movie is also dubbed if you are interested.

The series has very likeable characters and interesting villains.
