God, these threads are disturbingly prolific. Anyway, I'm looking for an action anime over 20 episodes in legnth, has to have good characters/characterization and growth, An overarching story that is introduced in the first 3 episodes, an overall cohesion to the story, and if it can make me think, even better. I can tolerate filler as long as it's a relatively small portion of the episodes.
I like FMA, Bleach, Buso Renkin, Code Geass, witchblade, gundam(wing, seed, 00) and naruto(except the filler makes it almost intolerable)
FMA brotherhood i'm about half-way through but the similarities to FMA make it a little boring to me. Death note was alright in the begining but i disliked it after L. DBZ is alright but the constant appearance of newer more powerful badguys gets unbelievable after freeza who was supposed to be the most powerful being in the universe.
Can't stand cliff-hanger endings without another season. no more than 200 episodes(I'm looking at you bleach and inuyasha).
I could never get into Ghost in the shell, and i have a similar problem with blood +. Neon genisis evangelion(or however you spell it) is also out, can't stand the main character.
Can't stand cowboy bebop, I watched the first few episodes and just couldn't continue. The lack of overall purpose to the anime was boring and the character interactions were simple and predictable, I've heard it gets better but an anime has only about 5 episodes to hook me, I'm not waiting any longer than that for the action to start.

I've seen more anime than this but I can never remember all of them off the top of my head. any suggestions would be appreciated, it was my favorite passtime for the last 2 years and I've run out of anime I can find on my own.

EDIT: To clarify the only two of my "criteria" that it really has to meet is an overarching story and to a lesser extent length, everything else is just bonus points.

Maybe Higurashi no naku koro ni? It doesn't tell you the story, it leaves you to figure it out over a bunch of small arcs, always making you second guess what you saw before and presenting stuff from different view points.

I will also suggest Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler). It's one of my favourites (which is probably why I always recommend it). The story is maybe not the most deep as other animes, but there is very little filler (if any). The best thing about it though are (for me) the characters. They all have some purpose and are pretty much built on. There aren't many pointless characters in the anime.

EDIT: Just thinking but the anime's I picked are not focused directly on action, maybe they won't suit you :/

My reccomendations would be the three animes which first introduced the genre to me as a child: Battle for the planets, Vision of Escaflowne and Outlaw Star.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed by them.

Trigun takes a while for the overarching plot to be introduced. However it is certainly worth the time.

Hellsing ultimate isn't complete yet (at least it hasn't been dubbed over) and it doesn't look like it'll reach the 20 episode minimum you want. It's very violent and the main characters are all pleasantly entertaining. I really freaking like it.
Note: there are two Hellsing series. An old one that came out before the comics were done. And Hellsing Ultimate which follows the comics more closely. Hellsing Ultimate is way better.

If you liked the first half of Death Note (which is all I could stand as well), then you'll probably like Monster. It's about a brain surgeon that saves the life of a little boy during the decline of the soviet union. It gets really intense from there on out. It pans out to being like 70 episodes. Not that violent but still engrossing.

I hear good things about Fate Stay Night. I've watched a bit of it and it looks pretty awwwrite.

It's drawn by white people so it's not an Anime but I recommend Batman Beyond.

Gurren Lagann is tons of fun. A really simple explanation is Gundams in Dragonball Z fighting with three-hundred foot power drills.

Avoid DN Angel like a plague. It's horrifically bad.

Dragonball is pretty good. Though it may be a bit long for you. Roughly 250 episodes. Young Goku's a likable enough character and so are Krillin and Yamcha. You'll enjoy it more than DBZ I think. It's very different in terms of plot structure.

Also, Cowboy Bebop has characters that are too simple but Bleach and Naruto don't? What the hell?

EDIT: Escaflowne is good too.

Ergo Proxy (sci fi action with a few (i mean few but still good) laugh out loud moments. It doesnt make sense plotwise at first but its the sort of not knowing that makes you want to know)

Full Metal Alchemist (brotherhood) (must watch if you like bleach. kinda similar but with a scientific angle (not sci fi))

Hellsing Ultimate (awesome, nothing more to say XD)

Darker Than Black (similar to ergo proxy with the sci fi piece things toghether approach but with awesome fight scenes added :) ergo has some but they usually are *punch* dead, *shoot* dead, *kick* dead sort of thing)

and
Hell Girl (must watch if you liked death note, It just pulls you in. No episode besides last 4 or 5 are about the main characters, there all from different perspectives with the main characters introduced half way through each episode)

Can we have a dedicated forum section for these threads?
I imagine if we had, people would stop making them.

OT: Just watch FLCL and Clannad, though they're nothing like what you described.

Edit: Elfen Lied might be a bit like what you asked for.

I'm sorry, but I chuckled when you said "an anime with a plot that makes you think" and "Gundam SEED, 00, Bleach, and Naruto."

I could say something really mean, but I'm too depressed on account of my copy of Gundam Vs. Gundam Next Plus not fucking arriving yet. Fucking imports.

And besides that, the YouTube comments section this is not.

So anyways, anime recommendations. In after Gurren Lagann.

Turn A Gundam was pretty good, though I stopped at around episode 27. The plot just grinds to a halt, on the other hand, it's for the sake of character development, if I remember correctly, so it's coo'.

Just got through Black Lagoon, but I wasn't counting how many episodes it was. I think it was roughly 20-ish. There wasn't much of an over-arching plot, it was mostly just... Well... This.

I'd also recommend Baccano! It was only sixteen episodes long, but it was awesome. I can't sum it up without spoiling a lot of it though, but it's up for free on YouTube.

Just a shame they took down the english dub, since it fit the series a whole lot more, and was actually a pretty good dub.

MulticolorCharizard said:

Mindfuckery? Excel Saga. Just... Excel Saga.

Fairy Tail is good, its still on going and its at about 60 episodes, the battles are nice and straight to the point and i never thought it was much of cliffhanger anime.

I was in need of some new anime to watch some time last week but then I remembered about digimon! I always remembered tiny parts as a kid and I'm loving it now :D I think it fits the descriptions, its action, I'm only in the 1st season and its 56 episodes long I think but I'm not sure how connected each series is. Also the plot was brought in reasonably fast so i recommend digimon! (better than pokemon)

Samurai Champloo?

Also, Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X. Worth watching at least to the end of the Kyoto arc, which is a good 62 episodes. I personally didn't mind the short Shimabara arc that followed it, but after that the regular series kind of loses steam. OAVs were good though.

So, let's dissect what we have here...

Right from the beginning this could prove to be somewhat difficult. Sometimes you just have to accept some things. Chances are you won't find a perfect show. Two of my favourites have already been mentioned in this topic: Baccano! and Black Lagoon, but both of them fail to meet your criteria. Baccano! is only 16 episodes long, and Black Lagoon lacks an overarching story. Both are really good though, so I'd still recommend them.

I like FMA, Bleach, Buso Renkin, Code Geass, witchblade, gundam(wing, seed, 00) and naruto(except the filler makes it almost intolerable)
Alright, only one I've seen there is Code Geass. This just got even more difficult; the Venn Diagram here has very little overlap.

FMA:B - I haven't seen the original FMA, though I do know that after a certain pivotal scene (that comes much quicker in Brotherhood than in the original, apparently), the story goes in a completely different direction. I dunno, I really liked FMA:B, to the point where I refuse to watch the original.

Death Note - Most people I've seen talk about this show say the same thing. I also felt this way, but I stuck it out to the end. Can't say it was really worth it, but it's there.

DBZ - Can't comment.

Can't stand cliff-hanger endings without another season. no more than 200 episodes(I'm looking at you bleach and inuyasha).
Okay, so Claymore is out then. Dagnabit, up until this point that was the show that I thought would be perfect.

I could never get into Ghost in the shell, and i have a similar problem with blood +. Neon genisis evangelion(or however you spell it) is also out, can't stand the main character.
Um... if you liked other parts of Evangelion but hated Shinji, you could try RahXephon. Same sort of thing (giant robots save the world from alien invaders + psychological mayhem) but lest angst. As an added bonus, the ending of RahXephon actually makes sense! You could also try Eureka 7, though Renton can be just as annoying as Shinji in some instances, albeit for different reasons.

Wow, I thought I was the only organic lifeform in the entire world who felt this way about Cowboy Bebop, though I forced myself to sit through the entire series. Let me tell you: it does get better... in the last two episodes. If you didn't like the first couple, then don't even bother.

I did like Samurai Champloo (Cowboy Bebop's spiritual successor) a whole lot better. Maybe you will too?

I've seen more anime than this but I can never remember all of them off the top of my head. any suggestions would be appreciated, it was my favorite passtime for the last 2 years and I've run out of anime I can find on my own.
Right so here we are at the bottom. I gave a few suggestions throughout, and here are a couple more. I obviously don't know if you've watched any of these, but anyhow:

Full Metal Panic! - recently rewatched this after not being terribly impressed the first time. It was a whole lot better than I remembered. It has a fairly good balance of action and characterization, only really has 1 filler episode, and it looks fantastic.

Trigun - Takes a few episodes for the whole 'overarching' thing to come into play, but the episodes leading up are very entertaining. In fact, I found them even more entertaining than the strung-together episodes.

Linebarrels of Iron - Not really good, but decent enough - I'm kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Features giant mechs, though it has elements from a huge array of different genres. Worth a shot, though I wouldn't blame you if you turned it off because the main character was too annoying for you.

Crest of the Stars - I just finished this a few days ago. It's shorter than you requested (13 episodes), but it's well balanced, and sets up for the next series (Banner of the Stars). I haven't watched the continuations yet, but Crest was a good show in and of itself.

Ahahaha! Another thread, another opportunity for me to recommend Claymore.

Satisfies all of your requirements, though it is substantially darker than most of your listed animes, and is overall the best anime I have ever watched.

Enjoy. [http://www.animefreak.tv/watch/claymore-episode-1-english-dubbed-online-free#English]

Half your "suggestions," don't fit my criteria, which I knew they wouldn't if I looked on the other threads.

Well have to agree that Claymore sounded perfect up until the "no cliff hangers" part.

Berserk fails that test as well though differently (Claymore's end looks decidingly inconclusive while Berserk's end seems conclusive; they both continue in manga form however.) Actually, come to think of it I believe Berserk is getting a reboot to complete the series so that might end up being a decent choice.

I can't entirely recommend Fate Stay Night though it certainly has some decent moments.

Samurai Champloo is a pretty good choice most people do seem to like it.

If you liked Naruto and Bleach except for the filler another good shonen I've heard of but never seen, is Hunter x Hunter.

Ah, since it hasn't been mentioned, Soul Eater has decent action and good characters though the story diverges from the manga.

Finally, Higurashi no naku koro ni is a great series and despite not liking it greatly myself Umineko no naku koro ni is also well recieved.

Well, may I recommend "Darker than Black"?
It's about super-powered humans called 'contractors' and their ongoing struggle with regular people. All of these events revolve around a cataclysm that occurred in the past known as 'Hell's Gate' and the strange effects it had on the world.

I'm very picky with the anime I like, and this one I like. It's very heavy, though, very little comic relief (which is sort of a plus in this case). Expect a lot of drama, tragedy and a lot of downers.

As the title suggests, the anime is dark. Multiple civilians die in every episode, characters are introduced then killed off when you get attached to them, everyone has a tragic past, but this doesn't prevent it from being an enjoyable series (in my opinion, at least.)

The main character is kinda odd at first but he develops nicely. Speaking of the characters, they're interesting. Strange, but interesting. The action scenes are nice and it moves along at a brisk pace. The plot is mysterious but don't expect them to get into too much detail, it stays vague. It has around 26 episodes, an OVA, a second season and a third mini-series. One of these, either the mini-series or the second season, is HORRIBLE (Ryukussi no Gemini or something like that) and I strongly recommend you leave it where it is and not watch it. It takes the characters and messes them up and throws in a new character who's an insufferable little brat.

Darker than Black; give it a shot.

If you want, watch it while watching something lighter like a nice comedy or a kid's anime or else it'll get pretty depressing.
I saw it while watching 'Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei' which was a nice contrast to it.
