So, I've run out of anime to watch, and all the ones I try just seem to be not very interesting, or I can't stand the characters. I'm hoping someone here on the escapist can point me in the direction of my new favorite anime. I prefer action anime, and if you could point me in the direction of something like Busou Renkin, FMA, Kenichi, or Code Geass, that would be pretty amazing.

And since we've all been on these threads 1000 times lets mix it up a bit and add a short list of our favorite anime to compare as well.

You've seen my short list: Busou Renkin, FMA, Kenichi, and Code Geass.

I second this recommendation for Cowboy Bebop. It's the best anime I've ever seen.

Of course it's also one of the only anime I've ever seen, but still! Cowboy Bebop!

I'm not an anime fan, but even I liked:
Ghost in the Shell (even the second one, although I hated the CGI for the backgrounds)
Akira
Spirited Away
The former two (three) may be for you, the latter one is more like a fairy tale.

Rurouni Kenshin (the first two seasons, ignore the last one). It's by the writer of the Busou Renkin manga and is generally considered to be awesome. I also highly recommend the manga as instead of the crappy third season of the anime it does awesome stuff instead.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Cyberpunk clandestine black ops law enforcement with a few dashes of philosophy and gorgeous animation and music.

Gundam 00: Excellent mecha anime with amazing fights, decent story, reasonably strong characters. Certainly beats the tar out of most modern Gundam shows.

If you want an awesome film-length anime, try Sword of the Stranger. Excellent samurai film, amazing music, strong and interesting characters, and the best damn sword fight in anime at the end.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: The manliest mecha show ever. It runs on absurdity, is hilarious, tragic, and overwhelmingly awesome. Pure spectacle at its finest. Expect to end up shouting "Who the hell do you think we are?!" after watching.

I didn't know Rurouni Kenshi was written by the guy who wrote Busou Renkin, Thanks, I'll probably go watch that now.

I've seen pretty much all of the others that have been recommended so far.

I've seen those threads, I don't generally see many recommendations that I haven't seen, if any. This community recommends the same 2 dozen anime over and over and over again, and I've seen them all. I thought a more specified query might return less generic recommendations. I just looked through them again, in fact. The only one recommendation that appeals to me even a little bit is Rurouni Kenshi, and I've been reluctant to watch it because the fuedal Japan setting doesn't really appeal to me at all, but I'm getting desperate.

Go for:
Mirrai Nikki - High paced semi-realistic fight for the death between twelve endowed individuals who can somehow see the future, all in different ways. Good plot, Amazing pacing, great twists.
Claymore - A grim world where monsters roam the earth an devour men. A cult of specially engineered female warriors who had been infused with the monster's essence fight to protect humanity. They are treated worse than the Witcher, and they can't get laid.

Mirrai Nikki looks interesting, i'll be adding that to my list to check out.
The others I've either seen, or I'm not interested in.

You will have trouble getting away from the screen. Clear some hours for you to watch it, just a friendly reminder.
Also: The World God only Knows.

I say nuts to action and just watch slice of life anime.
K-On
the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya
Nichijou

...

Yeah I got a thing for Kyoto Animation.

if you HAAAVVVEEEE to watch an action anime, my favorite one of all time is "tenga toppa gurren lagann". It's the Dragon Force of anime.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is also really good. I like it a lot more than the original animated series and, being practically the only anime fan on the planet who didn't actually care for the original series, I think that's saying something.

Darker than Black is my favorite anime so I definitely recommend that. Its basically about unfeeling superhumans that must pay terrible prices when ever they use their powers extremely fun and interesting anime.

Don't watch a lot of anime myself, but I broke my pelvis a few months ago and ended up housebound for 6 weeks. Amongst other things, I managed to watch Soul Eater after looking through the TvTropes page and finding the concept interesting. Plus, its only 51 episodes which to my limited understanding is a pretty short run for an anime.

Saying that, I did watch the dubbed version so I probably lose a mighty buttload of credibility right there, but hey ho.

Baccano! Which I cannot recommend enough times. It's fun, crazy, and charming in a psychopathic kind of way.
Mushishi, which is absolutely lovely and thoughtful.

I'm going to also give a thumbs up to Mirai Nikki. It's quickly rocketed to the top of my list of favorite series'

I also highly HIGHLY recommend "Another." It's a horror mystery based on a Japanese novel I've never heard of. It was still very good shit.

11-Eyes was also pretty neat. NOT A SPOILER - In the second to last episode though it becomes painfully painfully obvious that this anime got its start as an H-game, lol. The second the scene started I made this face ಠ_ಠ and went to wikipedia to confirm my suspicions.
