Rurouni Kenshin (the first two seasons, ignore the last one). It's by the writer of the Busou Renkin manga and is generally considered to be awesome. I also highly recommend the manga as instead of the crappy third season of the anime it does awesome stuff instead.
Definitely watch Rurouni Kenshin. I'm rewatching it now.

Darker than Black is my favorite anime so I definitely recommend that. Its basically about unfeeling superhumans that must pay terrible prices when ever they use their powers extremely fun and interesting anime.
I'd also recommend Darker Than Black...Great fun to watch, lots of action. The first season is fantastic, the second season makes more sense if you watch the AMVs.

Lastly I'm watching D.Gray-man right now, similar in style to FMA, lots of the same voice actors too. Only half way through this at the moment but great nonetheless.

FMA Brotherhood, Great Teacher Onizuka, currently running Zetman (though manga somewhat slowed down recently, same goes to scanalations :/), Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero, Kaze no Stigma, Darker than Black, Shaman King, Persona 4, and probably one of my favorites - Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

Funny enough, openings have almost nothing to do with the show. Lyrics a bit do, though.

Screw you guys, western animation is just as good as Japanese!
As much as I love both Avatar series (Last Airbender and Legend of Korra), they're not animes. Anime only applies to Japanese animation.

That as the point I was making, people only ever seem to thing quality animation comes from Japan. The west makes good stuff too, and we have less creepy undertones and weird fetishes in our stuff... OK so Totally Spies was pretty messed up.

Some that I like:

Read or Die (Start with OVA first, then the anime)
Oh My Goddess!
Serial Experiments Lain.

X-Men Anime did not annoy me as much as I thought it would.

I don't think anime-inspired counts for the purposes of this discussion.

If by "messed up" you mean "good" then yeah.

Here are my recommendations:
One piece - if you are looking for something really funny, epic and long;
Vandread - nice parody on mecha and harem genres;
Samurai Champloo - realistic samurais, refferences to actual historic events, hip-hop soundtrack (and it is really nice soundtrack);
Great Teacher Onizuka - not action, but still good piece of anime.

-Samurai Champloo
-Gurren Lagann
-Cowboy Bebop
-FLCL
-Panty and Stocking
-Genshiken
-Seto no Hanayome

The last three are personal faves, FLCL and PSWG are more "experimental" anime by Gainax so it's hit or miss with those. Same is a bit true for Gurren Lagann
Genshiken is my topper, but it's just a very clever, very true slice-of-life anime about Japanese Otaku (though a bit outdated by today's standards) so very much "for Otaku, by Otaku".
Seto has low quality animation but it's hyperactive and funny.

Ghost in the Shell Stand alone complex (both seasons)

Gundam 00

I also enjoyed Dennou Coil, Toaru Majutsu no Index I and II, and also Toaru Kagaku no Railgun.

Also, if you are looking for a badass main character, Kaze no Stigma.

OH, and Persona 4 and Steins Gate. This shit was amazing.

I agree. There is no difference, both are anime. Anime can appear in many different types. There's this Serbian anime film that you wouldn't even imagine it's Serbian. What to do, people have this bug that tells them anime is only Japanese.

I recommend death note because it has the best storyline ive ever seen easily, d Gray man and I double recommend riyuni kenshin
Death note- an anime about a genius detective hunting a mass murderer with hundreds of victims.
D gray man- an anime about a group of people called exorcisms who fight daemons.
Riyuni kenshin- an Anime about a former killer now turned wandering samurai still wanted for his past crimes.

If you like death note and code geass, go watch Eden of the East. It's 11 eps and two movies but it's SOOOOO good. The movies aren't remakes, they're the story too. I'm upset nobody has said it yet. It's really good.

Yeah I got a thing for Kyoto Animation.

if you HAAAVVVEEEE to watch an action anime, my favorite one of all time is "tenga toppa gurren lagann". It's the Dragon Force of anime.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is also really good. I like it a lot more than the original animated series and, being practically the only anime fan on the planet who didn't actually care for the original series, I think that's saying something.
I cannot stand slice of life.

Gurren Lagann was pretty good, but I lost interest early in the second season, started getting too absurd for me. As for FMA:B, I've watched most of it, but honestly it just didn't match up against the first for me.

Animes not all about the action checkout steins gate that was a good one although not very violents and I love my violent animes as much as the next guy but I was very impressed by it
here are a few others:
black rock shooter
ninja scroll either movie or series
Galaxy Express 999 and adieu galaxy express 999
mirai nikki (check it out or else I'll will polio on you)
Elfen lied
cant think of anymore at the moment
I'm not all about action, other than slice of life I'll watch pretty much anything for anime, I'm just in an action mood currently. Galaxy Express 999 looks interesting, I'll give it a look.

Tekkaman looks very good actually. Surprised I haven't stumbled onto it yet.

Eden of the East looks really good. Not something I'm in the mood for right now, but I'll keep it in mind the next time I feel like thinking about the show I'm watching.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, I'm pretty well versed in anime so I've seen most of them, but I've got a short list of anime I haven't seen to give a shot. Also, a double thanks to everyone who didn't mention the search bar, or previous threads :D
