Basically I'm looking to play Morrowind.

I've played it a bit with the Overhaul installed, but then the game broke and wouldn't load saves so I've got to reinstall in the entire thing.

One thing I didn't like was the combat. Are there any ways to change the combat to make it more like Skyrim/Oblivion?

Also is there a mod which doesn't drain stamina when you run? Because that was what killed the game for me. I hated walking around Morrowind at such a slow pace.

Also the game seems pretty hard. What's the best class/race combo to play?

Dark elf is easiest race to play if you want npc's more friendly.
I myself enjoy wood elf with a stealth approach as you can bribe, and steal and get stronger quickly.

Try the Morrowind nexus for such mods, however I recommend vanilla with re textures of lava and armors. Simply put you get athletics and acrobatics that make you faster. The reason why your getting slain is for a number of reasons.

Spoiler-

somewhere are the boots of blinding speed in morrowind if I remember that give you like +100 athelics, you will need to have magic resistance but you can run super fast.
******************************************

1. your taking on far to superior enemies, if you cant beat them go to another cave or grotto it doesnt work the same way as skyrim/oblivion

2. Use the Boats and the Netches for transport.

3. Your wearing far too heavy armor, this in turn results in you being super strong in combat when you are prepared and super weak in an ambush or running.

I always have Darknuts creature and armor retextures, as well as some kind of main landscape texture overwrite.

As far as big stuff that I always must have, Tamriel Rebuilt.

Anywho, combat...
Install Morrowind Enhanced, then get Combat Enhanced. It let's you map your block key, store up and activate a bullet time mode, and decapitate your enemies.

There's tireless running mod that will make stamina regenerate slowly while running.

I used that, and two other mods, one was to make Magicka regenerate at a very slow rate, based upon your willpower stat.

The second mod was making Cliff Racers non hostile, until you attacked them. (It was supposed to erase them completely, but something broke for me and they were still there, only without that vicious nature.

I recommend Better Faces and Better Bodies (not sure if they're included in the Overhaul mod). I played a lot with them on an older PC and they worked flawlessly.

If you want to make the game as easy as possible, I suggest playing an Orc Warrior. It might get a bit boring though. I played mostly as imperial Warrior/Mage custom class and I had a lot of fun. If I would play it now, I would probably try a high-elf mage.

I'm pretty sure they are.

What skills are best to flag? Is it like Oblivion where you want to flag they skills you are using the least to get level ups?

It doesn't have the same problem Oblivion has with leveling, so all skills are fine. Some are more useful than others though. For example: Athletics is a good minor skill for a warrior, but a waste as a major skill.

Other than that, I suggest taking only one armor skill and one weapon skill. The premade classes give you two of each in most cases and it's completely unnecessary.
Also, note that switching between weapons and spellcasting in mid combat takes a bit of time and should be avoided, so plan your character accordingly.

The levelling system is exactly the same as Oblivion (well, there are more skills, though but whatever), however, enemies don't scale with your level. You still want to maximise your gains from the levels, so don't take something stupid like Athletics or Acrobatics.

Good skills to take are:
- Block - blocking with a shield is automatic, rather than manual as in Oblivion and the higher the skill, the more often you block. And each time you block, you advance the skill a little, so actually having it HIGHER makes it a bit easier to level up. Both if you will be using it or not - take it as a major skill.
- Enchanting - just take it as a major skill - it levels really slowly otherwise, however, it's a rather useful skill - you can enchant stuff with lesser chance of failure, you can use soul stones to recover a larger amount of charge, your activated enchants use up less charge and even the charge recovers faster on its own. 'Tis an awesome skill for all.
- Mercantile - meh, it raises so-o-o slow that getting a little boost isn't going to level you up very quickly.
- Speechcraft - higher starting skill is good, you'll be able to influence NPCs easier. After some point (I think it was about 60-ish) you'll succeed often enough and later you won't really need to, as you'll be bribing them with your lots of money. Bribing still requires Speechraft to succeed but it has a higher chance of success. It still might be worth taking it as a minor skill to not have it level too fast, though.
- Marksman - if you'll be using a bow.

Other than these, you can take magic skills (aside from Alchemy) you will or won't be using - whatever.

Still, I'd suggest getting a mod that changes the levelling. The MADD Leveler and Galsiah's Character Development (GCD) both work fine and do similar stuff in a different way - they both allow you to just play the game rather than juggle skills and such. I personally use GCD but pick whatever.

The boots of blinding speed are in the hands (feet?) of a redguard woman named Pemenie who's hanging out in the countryside west of Caldera somewhere. She's standing by the road and wants you to escort her to Gnaar Mok, though you can kill her right there if you want and take her boots. Make a spell that casts dispel 100% on self for 1 second and put the boots on during that one second to avoid the bad effects (you have to do this every time you put on the boots). I find the boots to be an essential part of just about any playthrough.

Playing as an Imperial is an easy way to get people to like you, as they're the second most common race (people are more friendly to their own race) and they get a spell once a day to increase disposition by 30 points or so.

It's useful to have a magic weapon. A couple good places to get them early are from Tarhiel near Seyda Neen (you'll know Tarhiel when you see him) or from one of the guard towers in Balmora (I can't remember which one, but it's on the top floor on a cabinet and it's called the Sword of White Woe). Also, unlike Oblivion or Skyrim, enchanted weapons regain their charge naturally over time.

As far as mods, I can't help you with combat ones, but Tamriel Rebuilt adds a huge new continent to the game world with some very cool cities and a bunch of new quests. It's a great addition for when you think you've seen all Vvardenfell has to offer

I haven't tried it yet myself, but Morrowind Rebirth looks to be shaping up to become a pretty neat mod:

1) Try to use as few mods as possible if you're not experienced with modding. The game is fragile. It'll break under the stress of too many changes, additional scripts, and conflicting content.

2) Everyone complains about the damn combat. There is at least one mod rolling around the TES Nexus that makes every swing of the arm a guaranteed hit but, if this affects your enemies as well, you might end up getting curb stomped everywhere you go. My advice: Hold down the attack button to wind up your attack. This usually grants marginally better accuracy. Make sure you are close enough to your enemy depending upon the weapon you are using. Only use a weapon you are actually skilled in; every skill level means more accuracy with that weapon.

3) Technically, you can use the boots of blinding speed. I never did. The best way to get around Morrowind is just to pay for transportation and abuse the Mark, Recall, Waterwalking, and Levitation spells. You can learn all of these spells although they are difficult to cast for a novice. On the other hand, you can buy the spells as scrolls or as activated enchanted trinkets. Note: The Speed stat literally controls your overland speed as does your Athletics skill.

4) Morrowind is a game that becomes easier with specialization so pay attention to the skill bonuses you have at character creation. Stick to one favored weapon and armour class and just beat on local wildlife and weak bandits until you get better. Also, pay for training wherever you can get it as it will save your life.

Fair enough. I've gotten to the point where I can't play without them due to how much annoyance they alleviate, so if someone expresses their hatred of slow walking, I didn't think to be subtle about it.

There is a HUGE mod in the works that's basically going to reskin the Morrowind Game using Skyrim's game engine. It even got game media's attention, and Bethesda seems to not really care about it. (I would say they are silently supporting it.) I would wait for that to come out.

These mods seem to take years to come out. I'd rather just get playing the game now. Plus some of the older game mechanics in Morrowind intrigue me.

Ah Morrowind. I still haven't finished Skyrim but every time I go to do that I end up launching Morrowind in stead. Ten years and here's still a shitload of stuff I've never seen before. And the Morrowind Overhaul makes the game gorgeous. That's all I needed, OP. If your saves are breaking you may want to uninstall everything and reinstall from scratch. See if that works.

My favorite Morrowind MOD is called "Skyrim". It fixed so many of the bugs! I remember once jumping into a rock in Morrowind and just getting stuck there. Like no-clip stuck. Then someone released the "Skyrim" update and it was like an entirely new map and everything! Haven't seen hide nor hair of that dumb rock!

Anyways, I played a 40k Morrowind mod back in the day. It was pretty fun it graphically unfinished. As in alot of the stuff just wasn't rendered and there was a lot of nebulous grey-zones.

Wasn't there a similar mod for Oblivion that was never quite finished? I'm not saying that this one won't get finished either, but I'm not getting my hopes up. That being said, I am very much looking forward to Enderal.

I use a mod called "Tireless Running," which is right what it says on the tin. You can download it from File Planet
here.

Beyond that, I'd recommend to keep on trucking with the Overhaul, and anything else that catches your fancy. If you've run into a problem with it, try:
1) Back up your saves. Unlike future Elder Scrolls games (which keep save files in My Documents/My Games)[footnote]Why does the Escapist eat my backslashes? Did a backslash kill the Escapist's father or something? Now I have to use a forward slash to indicate a Windows directory.[/footnote], Morrowind keeps your saves in the installation directory, in a folder called "Saves". I'm pretty sure the uninstaller gives you the option to not delete your saves, but Step 3 will likely render that moot.
2) Uninstall Morrowind.
3) If there's still a folder where the Morrowind install directory was, delete it to purge any remaining traces of the Overhaul.
4) Reinstall Morrowind.
5) Reinstall the Overhaul.
6) Backup your Morrowind directory, so if something breaks again, you hopefully won't have to do all this again.
7) Go nuts with whatever mods your heart desires.

Time comsuming? Yes. Worth it? I'd say, also yes. The Overhaul does many wonderful things to Morrowind, and it would frankly take a lot longer to gather a bunch of mods to replace it yourself.

Funny you say that - one thing I will remember Skyrim for is getting stuck behind a rock. Yeah, I mean it - one of the things that sticks out from having played Skyrim is going through the mountains, down some slope, behind a rock and staying there. I couldn't jump out, that couldn't bring me out and I could barely move left and right - not that it helped, as there was a slight upwards slope in the crack I was, probably just a few degrees difference with the rest but I couldn't overcome it. I had to load a save but it was the first time in a TES game I was stuck in the scenery. It got me thinking how in Morrowind you could use Intervention, Recall, Jump, and Levitate to get out or if you didn't have any of those, then just jumping in place would have leveled up Acrobatics enough to for me to escape. The Acrobatics trick would have worked in Oblivion, too.

There's also a magic sword and a magic axe hidden in the environment of Seyda Neen. It was darned hard for me to find them the first time I got them even knowing they existed and referring to the UESP, but they're there and they're free for the taking.
