This topic is done to death probably, but this is probably hard to do unless you know what a person likes. So I been watching some Anime, but it's really daunting trying to jump in with such limited knowledge.

I've watch Cowboy Beebop, Akira and Ghost in the Shell and liked them. I've seen some Durarara!! but I haven't seen enough to get a good opinion of it yet.

So can you recommend so Anime based off what I've seen.

Not sure, I expect you will get bombarded with opinions as there is lots of good Anime about.

Things with relatively interesting yet "simple" plots would be good. If you can cope with Gits and Durarara!! you are mostly set.

Personally I suggest Mushishi because it's fantastic and episodic so you don't have too much overarching plot to keep track of. Ghost Hunt was fairly watchable and pretty good.

Wolf's Rain is one of my favourites but not to everyone's taste I suppose.

Uh, most of what you've watched isn't really what I'd call 'beginner anime'.

Anyway, since you asked:

Baccano! (same people/style as Durarara!!)
Ergo Proxy
Code Geass
Samurai Champloo

*shrug* That'd do for now, I guess. Loads of others, but they're... too different in tone.

Hellsing
Hellsing Ultimate (warning: incomplete 8 episodes so far 45min each. release takes alot of time but worth it probably 1 of the best anime ever created)
Death Note
Baccano
Full Metal Panic
Code Geass
enjoy! =)

What do you even mean with "beginner anime"? It's just a medium, there're all kinds of different genres and stuff for all kinds of target audiences. You wouldn't ask for "beginner movies" or "beginner books" now, would you?

So you like sci-fi, I presume? Or are those anime just the only ones you watched so far? Come on, you have to give more than that. What's your favourite genre? Are you looking for serious plots or light-hearted comedy? Or even mindless action? Remember, the more generic your question is, the more generic the answers will be. In the end you'll end up with all kinds of people's favourite anime lists which won't be of any use to you.

Gurren Lagann all the way. It isn't too long, the angst and emotional spheel is kept to a minimum, the action is fantastic and the comedy is pretty good. Plus, most of the characters are likeable (except for Nia, you will want to smash her face in by the end) and it has one of the most catchy theme songs for an anime. Enjoy!

Not much I can add, other than you should not watch Cowboy Bebop until you think all anime is crap.

I haven't seen Gurren Lagann myself yet but I could recommend another mecha anime thats just as awesome, King of the Braves GaoGaiGar. Great story, memorable characters and the animation is still pretty top notch for 1997 :) Check it out!

Oh btw, watch it in Japanese as the english dub for it is very terrible

What I consider beginner is if you were going to tell a friend to watch one anime what would you say. Like say you have a friend whose never watched a mob movie you wouldn't want to have him jump right into the Godfather because it's long and dialogue heavy so maybe you have them watch Public Enemies as an introduction to see if they like.

To me beginner to a genre or medium would be like an introduction. When I go to the video store or on Netflix and see all these different animes it's so daunting I have no idea what's good or not. I only watched Akira after they announced the live action film and wanted to see what everyone was talking about. I watched Ghost in the Shell after watching a Starz special about anime that said The Wachowski Brothers got the inspiration of The Matrix from it. Also I watch Cowboy Beebop after seeing clips in the same special.

I like Sci-Fi but I'm not sure about the light-hearted fun you mentioned. Would that be like DBZ. I watched part of some anime called Camaraderie High I believe and it was funny, but I'm worried if I try watching something similar I might not like it.

'Beginner' anime? That's like asking for beginner TV. In fact, it is asking for beginner TV.

What kind of things do you like in western shows? Just saying anime is hopelessly vague - it's a style of production, rather than a genre.

When you say Western do you mean western animation or stuff like Sergio Leone? If it's cowboys then yes. I have little to no knowledge of anime which is why I ask vague questions, I'm just not sure what to ask.

What type of show/movie do you normally like? Action, thriller, horror, suspense, ect? Anime is medium, and asking what type of introductory anime to watch is like asking what kind of introductory movie to watch. They are too diverse to give a accurate/precise title. There are animes that address all the genres that movies do.

What did you like about Akira, Ghost in a Shell and Cowboy Bebop? More importantly what didn't you like?

Things like this help people give a better recommendation for you.

What I like about Akira were the characters and the setting, I like post-apocalyptic settings. Ghost in the Shell I liked the characters and the action. I loved the music in Cowboy Beebop and Spike Spiegel.. That's the same reason I liked Afro Samuari (forgot to mention that) the soundtrack by the RZA is great.

By western in this case I mean European/American shows. Not just animation.
Going on that though... Cowboy Bebop's about all I can think of. Whilst not 'cowboy western' in setting, it kind of is in idea/story. But you've already seen that

For the record, it seems my knowledge of individual shows is no better than yours. I'm just making the point that saying 'recommend me an anime show' is pretty much the same as saying 'recommend me something to watch on TV' and then giving no more context

I live in the US so most of the shows I watch are American or European. I really don't watch a lot of TV but I usually watch comedies, animated shows or the occasional Sci-Fi show like Fringe, X-Files, etc.

Hummm.... just a thought, but go into manga?

Akira's manga version is much deeper and richer, thought the movie's animation is beautiful.

There's also GITS manga :D

Edit: Ohh, forgot to say, post apocalyptic anime? Few things messure up there with Nausicaä, though again, the manga is richer.

Well I think a good "beginner" anime would be avatar the last air bender and the boondocks.

They combine west and east styles of animation pretty good.

And another one would be IGPX its from the same animation studio from ghost in the shell.

I'd recommend Death Note. It's got an amazing plot, interesting characters, and very little of that "Everyone is a ninja and the women are all sexualized" thing.
