Let the Right One in by Thomas Alfredson. Swedish, and one of my favourite films ever, never mind solely foreign films.
I believe an American remake is coming out very soon? Hopefully it can live up to its Swedish predecessor.
NO! We do not mention that abomination. The trailer is terrible, and they've taken everything that was dark and interesting about the film out of it.
I haven't seen the trailers yet - youtube time!

EDIT: It doesn't look that bad - assuming that the music over the trailer is just because people expect music to a trailer. It ruined the mood somewhat. It all kind of depends what they do with Hakan, really. But it looks like all the bits about Oskar being a repressed psychopath are being kept in, which is a little surprising.

Infernal Affairs is fantastic. It was remade by Scorsese into The Departed but the original is millions better IMO.

Torrente http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120868/ (all three films)
-- the opening to torrente 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlG3mZxL0hM&feature=related

all three torrente films are great, but don't translate too well outside of spanish, unfortunately.

City Hunter - with Jackie Chan. I just love the manga, and the film is a pretty good live action.
-- street fighter scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA_ATLFxIA4 probably one of the greatest action sequences ever . . . yeah.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp -- based on a short joke comic strip, a great film with a great moustache. Made during WWII in London and, well, just a great movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036112/

Don't really know where you could get them these days . . . . and I don't think torrente has been subbed. oh well, still good movies.

The Experiment (2001) is a good movie. It's based off of the Stanford Prison Experiment where there are 20 participants and they are split into Guards and Prisoners.

going with the initial post recommendation, I'll have to bring up Sanjuro. It also stars Toshiro Mifune, who is one of my favorite actors of all time( I have a huge hetero-mancrush on him). Sanjuro is the sequel to Yojimbo, and it's way more violent.

In terms of new movies, I'll have to go with Fulltime Killers, aka Number One Assassin. It's an Andy Lau movie, and at the end there's a huge showdown where they recreate Metal Slug in real life!!

Crows Zero 1 and 2. If you like fighting films(realistic(ish) fighting), and you like foreign films, you'll love these two. I say realistic-ish because the amount of damage they take while continuing to fight is kinda unrealistic. The series is based off a manga.

The first movie is about a kid that transfers to the toughest school in town to conquer it by fighting and defeating all the other people. A feat that has never been performed in the schools entire history. They form groups and forge alliances. Some betray others. It all ends in a huge battle for the school.

I can't find the trailer for the first movie with English dubs, but both movies are subbed.

In the second movie, a non-aggression pact with another tough school is broken and the two schools must go to war. All the while, they're still trying to conquer the school.

The Vengeance Trilogy by Park Chan Wook. Korean films and absolutely stunning, if a little strange by western standards.

i agree but you might want to name them.

1) Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

2) Oldboy

3) Lady Vengeance
I LOVE Lady Vengeance. :) My friend and I watched it. It was very interesting.

Watch Departures. It's a quiet Japanese film about an funeral-home worker. No action, no special effects, just a bit of quiet drama. Now don't get me wrong, I like big0budget action films just as much as the next guy, but sometimes you gotta go for something nice and introspective.

DOWNFALL, or Der Untergang.

It's a German film about Hitler's last days in his bunker surrounded by his closest followers, and the other people who happen to be trapped there with him, as the Russian Army moves through Berlin and closes in on them.

It's so much more than that though, and it's fucking brilliant.
This movie is fascinatingly engaging and I absolutely recommend it to everyone here. Good stuff suggesting it first.

I have to say I really liked "Let the Right One in", "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "Moon Child", and "Kagen no Tsuki"(aka Last Quarter). Other than that I liked the live action "Death Note" movies a lot.

Damn it, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Hard Boiled, and Pan's Labyrinth have already been mentioned. But, I got one no one has mentioned. Bajo la Misma Luna. I saw it when it came out, and damn it, parts of it made me cry and feel good at the same time. By the way, it's not drama, action, or horror. But, man, it's good.

Lots of people are split on which they think is better. Personally, I thought The Departed was infinitely superior to Infernal Affairs, but to each their own.

OT: Wow, a lot of good movies already mentioned.

I'll add some.
7 Days. A South Korean movie thriller. Fantastic acting and good story though the cinematography is a little vomit inducing.

The Orphanage. A Spanish horror thriller. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes this a good movie. Genuinely scary atmosphere mixed with fantastic acting. The story is predictable but is told so well it doesn't even matter.

And lastly...
Shiver. This is also a Spanish horror(ish) thriller. Great acting, nerve-wracking but a little predictable. A few obvious plot holes, but I really liked the movie.

Watch the original version of the film "REC"

Trust me it's SO much better than the american remake, even the fact that its subtitled makes it cool and the story is great too.

Another great film is called "Azumi". A film about a hot asian ninja girl kicking arse and taking names......what more could you want?

My favourite non-anime Japanese film: Aragami.
The best example of minimalist filmmaking ever. Only 5 actors, two of whom are only on screen for about a minute each and one of whom has only 3 or 4 lines in the entire movie. The entire film is shot on a single set and basically concerns one extremely long conversation and then duel between the two leads. The atmosphere is incredible and the action is awesome. The only real flaw is a TERRIBLE piece of CG near the end (which is understandable, as the entire film was made in 1 week- it was made on a drunken bet) and a bit of a deus ex machina ending. But it still kicks INCREDIBLE amounts of ass, largely because of a chilling performance by Masaya Kato.

And my favourite comedy: Himitsu no Hanazono (My Secret Cache).
Hilarious Japanese comedy about an ABSURDLY money-obsessed girl who goes to such extreme lengths to recover a cache of lost money that she ends up transforming her entire (extremely dull and lonely) life. It's daffy and absurd but also quite inspiring. You really have to watch it. Unfortunately it shares a title with a better-known Japanese TV series, so it can be hard to find.

Harakiri- The story of a ronin who's Lord is forced to commit Seppuku. Very entertaining, and yet also heavy on messages- kind of like The Dark Knight.
This film is indeed fantastic, but if you can find it I'll be impressed. I saw it at a cult film festival many years ago (it was on a double screening with Ghost in the Shell).

Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)

Possibly one of the better (and most influential) German Expressionist films. I believe it's where Tim Burton got his crazy shit from.

Mind you, it's from the 1920's, so it's not horror as we would put it now. Still, one of the greatest films in my opinion (Also, they did several remakes, but the 1920's version still tops them all).

Or, to be more accurate, every film that Sergio Leone ever made. (Yeah, all seven of them.)
Lol, my post is right above yours and it says the EXACT same thing. Once Upon a Time in the West blows my mind. Ennio Morricone is GOD, and his scores make these already awesome movies into masterpieces.
