Right, since Final Fantasy XIII was a massive disappointment and I can't play my xbox any more, I've been craving for a good RPG for a while

However, a lot of games won't run because my laptop isn't that powerful

Windows Vista
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo T7350 2 GHz Dual-Core
RAM - 4 GB (installed) 4 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT - 512 MB

(I think that should be enough info)

Is there anything The Escapist community could recommend me, JRPGs are welcomed too

I've already got Oblivion and I didn't particularly like Morrowind

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, or anything by Troika, Icewind Dale 2 and Fallout 2 are all good ones that are older gems you could play. Kotor and mass effect are more new but also good. JRPGs i cant really help you with since i stopped playing those awhile ago.

Could I run Fallout 3?
Probably could yeah.

Also try anything from Bioware. I promise it's good.

Mass Effect 1 & 2
Dragon Age : Origins
Knight of the Old Republic
etc.

Have you got a PS2 because I can recommend some good RPGs.
The problem is that I'm at uni, I can't have a tv or it costs me £250 so it needs to be for the pc

Check out:

Black Isle (Fallout, Planescape etc)
Bethesda (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3)
Bioware (Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age)

Dot it. Do it now!

Get a PS3 and get Demon's Souls, best hard action RPG in a LONG time.
Just dont cheat the experience by reading walkthroughs, play online and read the notes left by other players ^^

Nethack is extreme. In fact the entire Rogue-like genre is extreme. Unless you're dedicated, I'd avoid it.

Nethack is damn awesome (Other than the graphics and the lack of say, a tutorial) but I don't know if I'd recommend it to everyone.

You should go onto go gog.com and buy the PC RPG classics, for cheap, DRM-free.

Baldurs Gate, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale were all added recently. And they're all considered great RPGs.

There's also Fallout 1 and 2 on there. I think all of these games are $10 US each. I think it'd be a much better spent $50 on these games than a new one. And these are pretty much guaranteed to work on your computer as they're not totally modern, but they still look totally acceptable.

I'd recommend The Witcher for a good, gritty RPG with actual moral choices that don't stick to 'good guy/neutral/asshole' all the time.

Bioware ones are always good, as well as older ones like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale II.

On the JRPG front, there aren't many on the PC, seeing as Japan pretty much hates the PC. The only recent one I can think of is The Last Remnant, which is decent, okay storyline, lots of characters and good, strategical battle system.

Your specs look like they might be able to run a PS2 emulator, and there's tons of JRPGs on that. If you can't run it, you can always fall back on the PSX, which runs on pretty much anything (literally).

Planescape: Torment particularly, best RPG story, hell, best story of all time.

get a DS and find the first Fire Emblem for the gameboy advance. It's the one with Eliwood. You will NOT be disappointed.

I recommend both Fallout 1 & 2, if you can handle the tad clumsy inventory system, scrolling through the item list to find that one item you're looking for can sometimes be a pain in the ass

Third this, Bioware is the best maker of RPG's on Pc, after that I'd say Interplay. Fallout & Fallout 2 are brilliant and very cheap right now, but they are older games and they look like this throughout:

But that doesn't stop Fallout 2 being in my top ten best games ever made

They are also really, really darkly humorous

Fallout 3 is less of an RPG than the first two fallout games, and less funny.
I think I'm going to reinstall Fallout 2 now.
