I've got to admit that i never played any red alert game...what makes this RTS different from other RTS games?
Red Alert is usually easy to understand, yet hard to master (learned about the versatility of spies just recently, plus tons of other sublime tactics). It is well known for it's distinct factions (often stereotyped amazingly great) and creative units. I thought gameplay was always fresh and plays out in many different ways.
Plus, hawt women, apocalypse tanks and a bizarre storyline (not even TRYING to be realistic, in contrast to the general RTS).
