Just some random thought I had. Why is red hair called "red" hair? It looks more orange to me.

Same reason we call some people "black."

Which is to say, everyone is crazy and who knows why anything becomes popular in usage.

I guess it depends on the person. I've seen some redheads that had Orange hair, and other redheads had a very red hair.

But it is just a name

Or for that matter, the same reason we call people "white".
Well, I'm pale enough to qualify for that title.

yeah, what others said. It's close enough to red, and people like to oversimplify things.

It's the same reason why blond-haired people are called toe heads. People just got accustomed to it and it has remained as such.

That's...that's "tow-headed," actually.

Not that I'm sure it makes any more sense than "toe-head," but yanno.

All hair is a variant of brown. No matter how dark a girls hair is it will always just be a shade of brown just a very dark shade of brown. In the same way red heads will never have a true red it is always just a shade of brown leaning towards red. This is sorta thing can also be seen in leaves falling in the fall notice how they turn to yellow or red before going all the way to brown but never go blue for instance. The leaf bit is more of my own observation and not actual fact.

I am disappointed my head hair has really blonded out over the years.

Maybe "red hair" peeps use to actually have pure red hair.
Then through genetics and breeding the colour has been toned down to orange.

Uh there are plenty of people with actual natural red hair. I'm quite fond of it. Orange just gets lumped into it, along with "strawberry blonde" wetf that is supposed to be. Seriously people call anyone with the slightest red in their otherwise brown or yellow hair a redhead. They are not.

I wish more people would go with pink, purple, blue, or green hair though.

I have no idea why YELLOW hair is the perennial favorite stereotypically. If its natural, and like golden and dark then sure I can get it.

But people with otherwise gorgeous hair just go nuts and dye it this flat, monotone, super bleached "platinum" - borderline grey granny - shade that makes me gag. And you see their eyebrows are black as the ace of spades and you think "why did you do that to yourself?"

I wanna go up to them and tell ask them "so...why did you turn your hair into an ugly, dry, brittle, mass of hay that sits perched upon your head like tumbleweed? Do you miss being able to run your fingers through it without taking a chunk of it with them? I bet you must get laid all the time, what with that and your beef jerky complexion from all that tanning. I'd probably have that constellation of moles on your neck checked out."

The real question is why are redheads hotter then normal people?

So this incredible paragraph aimed at somebody or just a good ol fashioned rant, sure has venom hehe :)

Either way it made me laugh as i see a girl with white hair and black eyebrows driving to work.

Reminds me of Alaister Darling:

Because they're on fire! :-D
...I'll show myself out.

As to OP...as some have pointed out, there is proper redheads out there, but yes, a lot of them are more orange than red. Of course, I think "orangehead" sounds awful...

Because there are red heads who are RED heads.

*We pointeth to Amy Pond*

She's red. And when you get more orange-y? That's genetics taking something out of the pigment, but it's still within the range of reddish hue not following the lines of blonde.

Redheads may be perceived as more attractive simply because they are an exception to the norm, their hair color and complexion are among the most rare in the world (and getting rarer):
http://digitaljournal.com/article/220229/

The same is probably true of people with Heterochromia iridum (two eye colors)

I think we can safely say this thread has been solved.

So... What to talk about now? People like gender debates, right? ;)

Don't know about elsewhere in the world, but 'ginger' was used as in insult in the playgrounds of England, while red-head was the way to talk about someone who was ginger without sounding like you were attacking them.

A redhead without freckles is like a warm summers day without ice cream, just not as good
