Just some random thought I had. Why is red hair called "red" hair? It looks more orange to me.
You can't be serious. You know that there are different shades of redheads, right? And that some of them have more orangey hair while others have a more reddish colour? And that we call the more orangey one 'ginger'?

This is even before we consider the fact that redheaded women are pretty much goddesses walking the earth.
Any redhead I've ever seen looks more orange than red even if it is a different shade. The only truly red hair I've seen is dyed.

I call orange hair, orange and red hair, red.

Orange hair can be natural, red can't as far as I know.

That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Well, I was going to chime in with what's been said already, that it's just an simplified phrase used to denote a particular group of people, maybe with a few pics for added effect...

let's just say I forgot to turn safe search on before I looked up "redhead" on Google...

I'll be in my bunk...

My girlfriend has damn near red hair and completely natural. Red head sounds better than say... orange head? I see where you're coming from though, it usually looks more orange than red and it's not impossibru to have red hair that's natural.

Meh, in Britain we just call the entire spectrum of redheads 'gingers'.

In fact redheads get a lot of disrespect here, redheads just sounds nicer, stick with it.

Capcha: paint it red .

I swear capcha is becoming sentinent.
I believe there was a thread about that.

OT: We call gingers redheads because redheads sounds slightly less offensive and just because some important person was probably colour blind when they first said it.

Uh there are plenty of people with actual natural red hair. I'm quite fond of it. Orange just gets lumped into it, along with "strawberry blonde" wetf that is supposed to be. Seriously people call anyone with the slightest red in their otherwise brown or yellow hair a redhead. They are not.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blond#strawberry_blond

It is just something in between blonde and "red hair". So just fairer red hair as opposed to dark red hair or the aforementioned bright orange.

OT: It is just what those "spectrum" of hair colours is called. Why are black people called blue people in Irish or why is a grey squirrel called a green squirrel? I don't know I'm sure someone does but it isn't like it matters it is just a name and people recognise what it is.

You've obviously not seen many redheads then... try google images?
I've seen plenty of redheads. I'm talking about blatant, bright, red color. It doesn't occur naturally. There are different hues but they all look closer to brown or orange to me.

I'm a red head & as long as someone doesn't call me "carrot top" I really don't care. Seriously carrot tops are green, my hair is not green.

Because people have two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein.

Without this mutation there would be no redheads at all to call redheads.

My wife and her brother have red hair and it's not orange. It is red, dark red.
It's not naturally as common as orange but it's out there.
