Perhaps I'm missing something.

Why is it whenever someone recreates a generic thread, a storm of escapists jump down their throats saying 'this thread has been done?' Yes, it has been done, but is are the abrasive replies justified? Isn't nonparticipation more appropriate?

I don't see why repeat thread merits such an aggressive reaction -especially when one considers that many topics are simple exercises in narcissism anyway.

Because this is the internet, and many people have nothin to do but shove their elitism down others' throats.

some people are just telling the person who posted the thread that a thread of the same topic has been done and if they had a question or problem they could checked there before making a new one. Although i have to admit some threads i don't have a problem with seeing repeated such as the occasional "where's your avatar from" because some people have funny avatars/stories.

Amusingly, I remember that a thread like this as been done.

Its more an expression of inevitable frustration I find. Its either that or pulling the whiskers off a small cat.

I was waiting for a wonderfully postmodern answer like this.

Also some threads aren't worth of repeating such as certain hate/praise threads towards a specific thing or things. (a Halo hate/praise thread for example)

What does it mean to "use the search bar" anyway?

Does it mean to google something? What if your browser doesn't have a search bar?

I'm very confused.

I'd say it's justified on a case-by-case basis. If we're talking about a thread that was done, say, a couple of weeks ago, I don't think a repeat would be entirely offensive. Unnecessary, perhaps, but not unforgivable, and even understandable. When we start seeing multiple threads on the same issue in the space of a couple of days, though, that's when it's worth discouraging.

That said, being rude/abrasive/elitist about it really doesn't help the situation all that much. The thread's already made, and from what I've seen, threads are not locked by the moderators just for being repeats (except in extreme cases), so if one must comment that it's an overdone discussion, the very least one can do is also contribute something to the discussion in question.

To be honest, most repeat threads were done the day before, the same day or are just generic hate threads of games like MW2 and Halo 3, movies like Twilight and Transformers and companies/people like Disney, Jonas Brothers, Bobby Kotick etc.
Not to count the zombie apocalypse threads in that.

But that being said, it doesn't deserve some of the aggression that I've seen posted on these threads. Like many people say, it's better to create a new thread then necro a thread that has been dead for 6-9 months and if the thread is a repeat of a 6 month or older thread.

The anger seems to come from the fact that most repeat threads are hate threads or done the same day, IMO and for those who are TL;DR on my short post.

People like to patrol this forum being self righteous, arrogant, dicks. Its just something people do, usually new people.

Don't get me wrong, if its an incredibly stupid repeat thread where even the original was awful then people should be told so, but without the unecessary aggression because thats just being what I pointed out before.

Theres a search bar near the top of the page if you scroll all the way up where if your going to make a thread or look for a thread you can type in a specific phrase or just keywords to get similar results and if you can't find anything then it probably hasn't been done and you have an original idea

Yes. In my time on the Escapist I have noticed peoples responses to these threads, and to what are OBVIOUSLY troll threads, I have come to the conclusion that these people are just doing it to bolster their post count.

It amuses me greatly, because it's lead to my conclusion that necroposting > reposting here, which is the inverse of most forums I've been to.

Yeah I would agr-WAIT, I've been here longer and I have a larger post count. [HEADING=2]YOU MEAN NOTHING[/HEADING]

=]
I have been here longer and I have a higher post count.

In fact I have been here so long that I have seen ALL of these threads before in one shape or form. I was here when 5000 posts was an incredible shit ton. The forums are so busy these days.

That is why I take the stance of "Elitist bastard what makes you think your contribution is new or unique. There are probably 10 comments just like your comment that you skipped over in your rush to post." Same goes for threads, it's been done already, but really as long as you checked and its not an active thread your duplicating who gives two rips.

OP: I do it when it's absolutely blatant. Like with that TF2 war update yesterday.

But usually I give them the benefit of the doubt.
Ditto the above to you too Furbby.

Being part of the Spanish Inquisition myself, I see to it that the rules of this forum are followed.

As a man once said "I didn't make the rules, I just enforce them"

But to be honest, it is annoying when people make a thread that has obviously been done before and better. Its just part of the forum life cycle
