What exactly are you confused about?
Why would I want to change the size for? What is it's purpose?
Ah, because if you delete all partitions, you need to make new ones, thus choosing sizes for them. Also you may want to have a partition for diverse purposes. I have a partition for games, one for software install and one for windows. They're all a different size.

1. download windows XP (you already have a legal license to own XP)
2. install 7 or Vista
3. replace the HDD (if it makes a rattling noise while it runs its busted)
4. install linux

I see. Thanks darth.pixie for the help including the rest of you guys above.

Well, it's 1:35 now and I need to head out to bed. I will update in this thread of any errors or problems I encounter when I visit my friend's place. Hopefully, all goes well... and I will post again if I have any other questions. Anyway, thanks again guys. :D

Removing partitions can allow bad sectors to be reached if the drive is old enough and has them. Its a cheap 50 dollar fix for a new hard drive. That'd be my recommendation.
How's that going to run you 50 dollars? You can remove and make partitions however you want anyways. Even then it's a long-shot.

50 dollars will get you a new disk. If not 1 TB, then at least close.

They're consumables anyways.
Well just $50 for the new drive .. and install it on that .. the other drive could be quite old, and have bad sectors .. who knows. Its usually easier to get a new HD than to try to diagnose problems ...

Wait, if his father only speaks Chinese then why are you making the PC use English?
Cause my friend is the only one using the PC besides me and our friends. Also he speaks mainly English. Moreover, if there was ever a problem I had to come fix, I will need to be able to read it.

Anyway, I just came back from his house today and it was a success. I took the Windows XP CD, clean it and redid everything again, only this time - deleting all partitions and selecting a quick NTFS. However, there's one thing that bothers me still.

"Diskette drive 0 seek failure
NOTICE - Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range.
Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard."

Can someone explain what this is? So far nothing is wrong, everything works as it should be. The message only appears when starting the computer.

Damn...

That means that the drive failed or will fail shortly. It's from the drive itself and there is really no way to be wrong here. Since it doesn't mention a specific parameter, I can't offer more about it.

The computer may have crashed due to it before (if it was at system startup)

The only thing he can do is replace it.

Wow... I don't know what to say. Even my 11 year old DELL 4550 computer still works perfectly without any hardware errors. If that's the case, I'll have to tell him about it. I wonder what the hell he did to his computer.

Again darth.pixie you've been a great help, I definitely learned a lot today.
