Here's my question, by a person drinking say a few cups of coffee every morning will this develop a reliance on the caffeine and hence lead to you 'requiring' that few cups every morning otherwise you'll feel drowsy and sluggish?

yes... That happens with any chemical. And in time, someone will need more and more caffeine to wake up in the morning.

Yes, and again, like any other chemical, not consuming caffine for a great enough period of time, will "resensitize" your body, thus coming full cirkel.

I usually need coffee to function in a "normal" daily routine ie. getting up for a morning lecture, but I've been drinking next to nothing during my summer holiday, so my first day of school is going to be interesting... (mostly due to the tar-like substance I call coffee)

A friend of mine needs to have caffeine at some point during the day, or she gets a headache. Made me cut back on my intake.

I'd be the first guy to profess his love of coffee, but I wouldn't say I'm addicted. I don't really need it to wake up, I just love the taste and smell.

I don't drink coffee. Can't stand the stuff. I drink soda, though, on occasion. I wouldn't say I've got any sort of reliance on it. In fact, technically nobody has caffiene reliance. It's just that it starts the brain faster and thus helps you get ready for work faster. If you, say, don't work early mornings, you may not require caffiene at all.

I get caffine from a can of NOS in the morning. Usually I only drink it if I really need it like for getting going, like if I was awake till two and I had a test at eight. Damn college.

I drink coffee out of habit more than necessity. I usually grab a cub from the local Java City before classes. They do the whole Starbucks trend of naming the coffees and sizes weird names, and always asking if I want cream. Ive yet to succumb to it, always walking in saying the same thing "Medium black, fuck your cream."

I've been drinking coffee for about 6 years, and I've never had to drink it. Some days I won't, and some days I will, but I don't feel anymore awake if I do or don't.

Morning caffeine is the best way to circumvent my body's natural tendency to only have energy late at night. The alternative is to get up earlier, but we all know that's not possible.

Well it is the most widely abused mood altering drug. Id hate to be that person, its just as sad as any other addiction, cept where crack heads get all sketchy caffeine people become assholes.
True.
I, personally, avoid all mind-altering substances like the fricking black plague.

We really still don't know how that thing up there works. I'm not about to go mess with it.

I'm not entirely sure if its also a mental thing as well as chemical. I used to drink mountain dew or energy drinks often, and coffee too in the occasional morning. Though I quit cold turkey for a diet six months ago, and I never felt tired or lethargic in the mornings. Even right after stopping drinking that. So unless there's caffeine in our water supply here, it doesn't seem to bother me without it.

I go through periods of drinking bucket loads, and then inexplicably I will wake up after a month of this and not drink coffee at all for at least a week.

The cycle rinses and repeats, rinses and repeats, rinses and retreats then is back in a week.

I have a lot of caffiene from soda but then again I really don't need it for energy because I'm young enough to have a lot of energy already.

But I do know a few people who definitely have a reliance on caffiene but then again I guess it's not as bad as drugs or alcohol.
