I'm 80% certain I'll watch V for Vendetta today with my dad when he gets back. I even have a Guy Fawkes mask I used for Halloween. Otherwise, today is 'do fuck all' day.

I was wondering if someone was going to bring this up today. It's early in the morning and I was just thinking about related things. Nice touch to you who posted Tchaikovsky, V was a cool movie and an even better graphic novel. Anyhow..."Vae Victus!!!"

A little point of interest for you. Did you know that the guy burnt on the bonfire isnt actually supposed to be Guy Fawkes? Its actually supposed to be the pope or any major catholic figure.

Heres a quick para to sort of back up my point (taken from wikipedia i will admitt)
What unity English Protestants had shared in 1606 began to fade when in 1625 James's son, the future Charles I, married the Catholic Henrietta Maria of France. Puritans reacted to the marriage by issuing a new prayer to warn against rebellion and Catholicism, and on 5 November that year, effigies of the pope and the devil were burnt

ME TOO!! *Shivers

OP well, tomorrow is my best friends birthday, so we are going to a paintball party. Mostly I'm curious about the fact that when I get back, if anonymous doesn't betray us, there will be no facebook.

Going to see Motorhead.

They make better noise than fireworks anyways.
I still hate you for that

OT: After having to look up what the hell you are talking about I am doing what I originally planned today. Gaming, getting my car out of impound, and going to an awards banquet. I find nothing exciting to celebrate about today except for the fact that he failed and in failing wound up not killing a bunch of innocent people. Also, I have never seen or read V for Vendetta. Then again I am a cynical American female and don't really celebrate holidays anyway. Most of them are over commercialised and people forget what they are originally about and celebrate the "legends" not the actual holiday.

I'm going to do bugger all (like I have been doing most of the day), play some more Bastion. Then later order pizza, drink beer and watch crappy Saturday evening TV. Like I do every Saturday.

I hate bonfire night, the sooner these fireworks are done with the better.

Yeah, I remember seeing a video claiming that Anonymous were going to bring down Facebook or something to that effect. Nothing's happened so far so I assume it was a bit of an empty threat or wasn't actually the main branch of Anonymous but some kind of splinter.

Resenting the popularity of V for Vendetta and getting annoyed at a bunch of people missing the point. And then seeing a Super Art Fight.

I would celebrate it by putting a guy fawkes mask and join a bonfire, but I fear that police officers would just mistake me for a protestor and beat me senseless...besiedes, it's been a rainy day and I don't feel like going outside, maybe I'll just stay at mines and take a cup of hot chocolate.

No, the idea that people can revolt and make a difference in their country. That ideas and words still have power, things that should never be forgotten.
Things like a false and romanticised view of the Gunpowder plot?

Because what's been remembered is a lie, and the actual events are largely forgotten. This is not a unique point in history, but it is a dangerous one. Even as Guy Fawkes masks appear on Occupy Wall Street in America, the majority of Americans have forgotten how we got to this point, though it is quite important. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." And what will we take from this? Probably what we took from Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes masks represent the importance of fiction over fact. You pretty much said it yourself.

I'm sure Australia has its own analogues. It's shit. Dangerous, hypocritical shit.

My friend, everything in this world evolves. Many of the things we do and celibrate and have significant good meaning to us were born of terrible acts and horrible legacies. While the past meanings of things are worth remembering, there is a dividing line between the past and the new, evolved meaning. In some cases (such as this one) the previous and present meanings are opposites, where the new meaning has evoled from the past on purpose to add extra strength, meaning and drive to the present.
The past is important, but if you look at it too long you will miss the present and fall behind on the future.

OT: I'll be celibarting it like the holiday it has been in my life time. Hopefully with a few wonderful fireworks and some friends to laugh with.

I'll be celebrating by doing a 24"x30" charcoal drawing of 'The Three Evils' (whom are the attacker, the provoker, and the observer).

Let's see... I'll probably celebrate by drawing, training Pokemon, or maybe actually applying for jobs (not necessarily in that order), unless something else comes up.

Yeah, no thanks. I have better things to do than celebrate the terrorist actions of religious fanatics.

The eve of the Hungarian Revolution is coming up in a few weeks. I'll celebrate that instead.

I wonder how many of us remember that Guy Fawkes was trying to blow up Parliament, and government along with it? I suppose in modern society, if Guy Fawkes was to try again today (as a 500 year old zombie), he'd be branded as a terrorist. :p

Just saw your post after posting myself. My thoughts exactly, though not the Hungarian bit. But have fun!
