I wouldn't judge people for say, liking Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, or whatever. Because perhaps the things I like could be seen just as bad. For example, I really enjoy playing Black Ops 2 while a lot of people despise the franchise. Though to be fair, it's a video game and my girlfriend enjoys it too. If she started getting.. into, books like... the Grey one, um.... we'd have a talk.

I'd basically tell her what most people think of it - it's for moms that want more of 'spice' in their life. I did not quote that, people on the internet have stated this way before I even found out the book existed lol.

My wife read it. Enjoyed it, even. It wasn't a big deal, you'll be fine.

Well, what seems to me is the, supposed danger, involved in being exposed to BDSM at first seem to rile some people, while others scoff at the idea of this being a romance. The latter one making the advertising for the book out to be misleading. I think we are allowed to judge on that merit.

Mind you, I'm parroting what someone else has said here. At the time, I'm not interested in that book. Maybe I am more interested in what I like: just straight up fantasy and maybe sci-fi. I feel like I'm dabbling here and there. So, the shadow trilogy of alexey Pehov and Mortal Engines from Philip reeves are what I have liked thus far. I'd have to take more 'risks' and see which books I like for myself.

But at the same time, how am I going to game?

For the record, that book (50 Shades of Gray, and yes, I know that the title is something else, but let's be honest as to what it's referring to) is terrible. Like the original work the fanfic was based on (Twilight), it teaches extremely dangerous practices in a D/s relationship to the point that a sizable part of the BDSM community has read it to teach newcomers what not to do that they may have in mind.

And, uhh, obligatory, I don't eat ice cream when I watch porn or a porn derivative (such as a proper visual novel). You need both hands free... to work the keyboard and mouse.

I'd recommend finding one of TeamFourStar's readings of the book. They are hilarious.

I thought 50 Shades had it's primary market with older women, hence the term "mummy porn", which was quite upsetting when I discovered it didn't involve a man covered in bandages punishing the naughty ladies who broke into his tomb.

My mom tried to read it and hated the damn thing so much. I don't even think she took it back. I think she just threw it out. And the only people I have ever heard of reading it were younger women...

Nice of you to try to be charitable by putting 50 Shades Of Grey on the same level as a trite eroge, but come on, it's 50 Shades Of Grey we're talking about here. I'm not sure I could find words to describe the massive karmic bomb willfully seeking out and reading that book is. It's like, if you read it just to mock it for how terrible it is, you're still committing an act roughly equivalent to taking a photograph of a drowning kitten.

Quite a few unfortunate criteria, given that VNs *ARE* Japanese-written and one of the default source materials for anime adaptations, and they are usually longer than ordinary novels.

Katawa Shoujo itself is western-written, but it intentionally follows the medium's Japanese tropes (takes place in Japan, is about romance and high school life), though the details of it's writing style still has some sublter westernisms.

Saya no Uta is relatively short. It's a Lovecraftian horror story. Warning, the few sex scenes that it does have are... disturbing (intentionally so).

Fate/Stay Night is long, and has a very slow start, but overall one of the greater stories. It's about a Battle Royale of seven mages summoning the spirits of seven historical and mythological heroes to fight for gaining the Holy Grail.

ef - a fairy tale of the two: This one is another high school romance, but I'm particularly fond of it because of it's production vaues, music, and grand melodrama.

And anyways, my overall point is not really that I'm vouching for either of these, all of them have very good reasons not to be liked by everyone, especially if you don't like japanese storytelling, but at the very least I can be vouching that they are as good as some of the best porn-free VNs, such as Ever17, Clannad, Higurashi, or Steins;Gate, and which ones of them have porn scenes is a very faulty rule of thumb of whether their story can be good, with that you will end up getting a pretty much randomized result.
