Requesting emotionally complex music

First off, listen to that whole album and the soundtrack to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, along with Ghosts I-IV by Nine Inch Nails. It's all pretty similar stuff.

Damn, you guys have good taste. Half my suggestions are already gone. But anyway, try these:

<youtube=manW5v-AR7U>
<youtube=L_ijVnXIWBk>
<youtube=_Adxi8O5lqQ>
<youtube=e-Ho7IwupxI>
<youtube=v8Djdi6z0m8>

As for what I feel listening to the one you posted, I... genuinely can't describe it. It's kind of ominous and tense, but also quite warm and comforting at the same time. So I don't know.

I'm gonna go ahead and give a little shout out to Rodrigo y Gabriela (this particular song also features C.U.B.A.). Without leaning on a lyrical crutch they manage to produce much more emotionally profound music than a lot of what you hear these days. Haunting spanish guitar, just damn beautiful. I'll let it speak for itself.

The whole track is worth a listen, but skip to 6:10 for the most powerful part if you must.

Been listening to this a lot recently, when I can't sleep.

That one's really more a visually emotional performance, but it's strangely cathartic to listen to.

it's disappointment, loneliness, the sad one, when you do something, and suddenly you realize that nobody really cares, and you could as well not do it at all, and nobody would notice, you could as well not set your foot outside, ever, and notbody would mind, miss you. the passive anger in the background, "it's not fair! how is it that basically anybody else WOULD be missed, that anyone's else actions matter, and their inaction would be noticed? I want that privilege too! How is it that people consider it to be such a common thing? It's not!".
the anger fades into unease, your throat tightens (i mean that feeling, can't remember how it's called properly), and you feel like you're going/you want to cry, but you can't, it just doesn't come, and you just stare mindleslly. slowly, all the feelings and thoughts fade away, and you're left an empty, cold, dark shell.

...i have seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure the song would make me feel the same even if I haven't.

btw, watch the movie, it's pretty good, IMO.

about the part of giving recommendations... I don't really dare to say what is an "emotionally complex" piece, I think my perception of something like this is mostly different from most people, and I'm not willing to expose it for possibly being challenged. BUT, Massive Attack should generally fall into this cathegory, almost anything by them.

...BUT... reminded by the Mad World posted here by someone, there's one song that makes chills go down my spine, and I'd gladly and immediately tear apart anyone who said it was not emotionally strong and complex (yes, more so if you've seen the movie, but only because it compiles all the feelings from the movie itself, and to me, it's strong, confusing, manifold: beautiful, scary, sad, noble, cathartic yet solving/ending nothing really, dramatic while completely peaceful, it makes me want to cry and smile at the same time, makes me thing "i understand" while thinking "what the fuck was that?" at the same time... first time I heard it, i REALLY cried, because it HURT immensely, the song physically hurt, and I said about it the same I said about the movie: "It's horrible, cruel, sad and it hurts. I hate it. It's one of the best songs I've ever heard and it's always going to be one of my all-time favorites.")
Enjoy:

(P.S. how the hell do you embed videos directly into the post? i can't remember or find instructions anywhere)

I'm a big music buff, up to the point I went into musical theory in college, and I've been mulling this over.

When you say emotionally complex, what do you mean? When most people say it they mean 'melancholic' or 'strong emotions'. But when I think emotional complex music, I get a blank. All music is emotionally complex. Happiness and joy are all just as much emotions. Even something as simple as 'banana phone' can inspire complex joy in a person.

And a lot of what has been posted seems to fall in the former category. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, since yes, it is emotionally charged music across the board, even if it leans towards one side of the emotional spectrum.

For something different, check out the soundtrack for the movie "Oh! What a Lovely War!". You can find almost all the Oh! What a Lovely War! songs in this YouTube account: http://www.youtube.com/user/OhWhataLovelyWar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eih67rlGNhU This one has always spoken to me personally, especially recently with events in the U.S. and abroad.
I guess I'm talking about music which seems to invoke emotions which are juxtaposed. Happy and sad at the same time. Calm but with a sense of menace. There aren't too many examples I can think of directly but the one I posted in the OP seems to do the closest thing in my ears...

Lets see..

I'd recommend checking out the rest of the album "Tides" too. It conveys a really nice mood. (I also recommend checking out every other album too lol)

I'd add a few hundred more but I'll just stop there ^_^ . If you like what you're hearing definitely look these artists up. Diving into the world of weird electronic music is tons of fun, and you'll definitely have some interesting combinations of emotions.

yeah..I think its acutally a pretty hard request since the emotional aspect of music is completly subjective (unlike its technical aspects)

unless it says otherwise in a textbook..then its fact[footnote/]joke refering to a recent hilarious forum incident[/footnote]

It goes from the feeling of a jaunty walk in the park on a nice day to fleeing from a sudden and painful summer hailstorm and finally comes to the point where you've found shelter from the storm and get to watch the wet frozen misery fade into the past.

I don't think any piece of music has come close to understanding the idea of simultaneously loving something and being terrified of it's immense power. Anyone who hasn't had any experience with Catholicism... this is all you need to know.

Ulver make some pretty damn good Ambient music if you're looking for more of that; the first two in particular being quite sombre, also a few more minimalist tracks varying from the tranquil to the haunting by Devy, Unkle, Faunts and the Deftones:

(song actually ends at about 4:38)

See if any of those tickle your fancy, might be back to this thread later, but for now it's getting kinda late.

And finally, by Eminem:

P.S: What's the tag to show youtube videos? How do I use it?

EDIT: Thanks Trilligan =)

Tag is

[ youtube = video code ]

Where video code is the unique series of characters in the address of the video in question.

For instance this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxZcFArCeKs

gives us this JxZcFArCeKs as a video code

Also, you can find out how the formatting works by quoting a post that uses it correctly, because the quote will break down all the formatting into its respective tags.
Thank you!

The intro sounds like whale songs on a foggy lake. The vocals come in like a steam whistle that's just not strong enough to make its way to you. Never fails to give me shivers.

The song title suggests a song that is nothing like the actual song. Then you actually listen and realize the title was just right.

i would suggest checking out anything by 65 Days of Static, but "Drove Through Ghosts To Get Here" is a fave song of mine. and i've heard very few songs more emotional and complex than "Kétsarkú Mozgalom" by Venetian Snares. enjoy

The Human Equation clearly fits what you are looking for considering the whole point of it is internal emotional conflict.

Persona music gives me all of the feels.

Both songs both make me sad but inspire me at the same.
