Dragonlance: Chronicles
Funny you should mention that, I was really into fantasy stuff (the genre, not the thoughts that take up about 3/4 of my time in class) in middle school and high school, and I read the whole Autumn/Winter/Spring trilogy (if I remember right). Good stuff.
They released a Summer book a few years later (Summer Flame) that happens years after the Spring book ended. I read the Chronicles Trilogy when I was in middle school as well, and it ended up being my favourite fantasy series :D
I had no idea about that, thanks!

Yanked from elsewhere: movies to see and books to read. This isn't about awesome movies, great special effects, tributes to artists who died tragically young, sex scenes or landscapes, nor about who told the story first. This is what people should have to read or watch before they can be trusted with public office ... or something very much like that.

Suggestions so far:

A Bridge Too Far
All Quiet On The Western Front
Amen
Apocalypse Now
Betrayed
Blackadder Goes Forth
Das Boot
Enemy At The Gates
Hamburger Hill
Heart of Darkness
Johnny Got His Gun
Missing
Paths Of Glory
Schindler's List
Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange)
The Confession
The Constant Gardener
Z

Your suggestions, please!
Viewing & Reading

District 9
Crash
The Pianist
Donnie Darko
Taken
Children of Men
Memento
EVIL DEAD 1 & 2 (just to laugh)
Letters from Iwo Jima
1984

Also, pretty much everything everyone has said above^
I seconded crash, children of men, and 1984, while I love the other ones, I think they're brilliant,(espcialy donnie darko and the evil dead series) They're not movies that teach imporant lessons. They amazing, but not constructive towards leading a good life

My list would be

Crash (this movie completely explores all aspects of racsism and once you see it, it changes you. EVERYONE should be made to watch it.)

Children of men (about what we're doing to our planet and the problems we are creating)

1984 ('nuff said)

Robert A. Heinlein's A Strange in a Stange Land (shows our customs and beliefs through some one elses eye's and completely gives you a new perspective on life)

Robert A. Heinlen's Starship Troopers (not the crappy movie, the book, it explains war and the government to a T and raises questions adn problems with the way in wich we deal with things.)

Yes Man (Yeah it's funny, but it also teaches you to be open to new things, and shows how amazing life can get if you just take a chance.)

And

A Clockwork Orange (book or movie both are amazing.)

I'll probably think of tons more later, but I'm tired right now and that's enough for now lol

Gattaca manages to provoke thought, portray a depressing society and be optimistic at the same time-which very few movies can do.
