I'm sure this is a huge leap and all but could someone please explain to me just what the bloody hell "Quantum computing" is?

OT: This sounds impressive but I just don't know what quantum computing is so I can't get really excited about it like most people here are.

Quantum teleportation with a person is impossible. They'd just get sent back in time to fix all the things that went wrong in their lifetime.

I must admit I have only passing acquaintance with Quantum Info theories (I attended a conference on it at the end of under-grad and it was a little over my head at that stage), but I don't think you can use it for FTL communication, it's only the 'resurrection' of the information that is instantaneous, not the full propagation.
Quantum Computing is something i'm terribly interested in, albeit quite a good bit over my head. I do believe that, since the two qbits are in an entangled state, it is not only FTL, but it is the instantaneous transmission of information.

From what I understand, when do things are entangled, they are bound by a fundamental property of the universe, the conservation of energy. The act of changing one of the spin states of one of the particles will instantaneously change the other. Einstein and some other people thought of it back in the 30s or 40s. It's famously called the "Spooky Action At A Distance."

It doesn't really matter as the technology wont be available in household PCs for a long, long time, if ever

My school just opened part of its new "Quantum-Nano" centre that will facilitate research in quantum computing and nanotechnology. I will be taking classes in said building. (for the nano)

"surmised a cat could exist in a quantum "superposition" state of being both alive and dead at the same time"

This reminds me of the beginning or repo where the guy is talking about a scientist who put a cat in a box with something that emits poison. There where no cameras, ways to control the device, or way of knowing if the cat was alive or dead so the scientist used the assumption that the cat was both alive and dead.

With this and last years creation of synthetic life we prove more and more that you don't need flying cars to be in the future and also...

Anyone willing to bet that when this technology first becomes available for regular households that gaming forums everywhere will be full of the same people screaming "I'm not buying into this gimmick!" like they do for every new piece of technology? Or is it just me that foresees this coming?
Not true at all. Gamers are by far the demographic most susceptible to hype.

Old folks and survivalist nuts are the ones resistant to new technology.

This is Schrodinger's Cat, the experiment the article references.

Did they actually manage to TELEPORT something?
Only Information, the debate continues as to whether information is the sort of something you are probably referring to.
Physical information, like DNA? Or a number on a computer?
Edit: MY post doesn't make sense. Meh, I am going to sleep.

I believe your confusion comes from what quantum telportation actually does. Quantum teleportation can only transmit quantum information (that is, an entangled quantum pair). It cannot be used to transmit classical information such as a voice or a text message.

The only thing is, is that if Quantum Computing makes current computing obsolete, then the class I'm currently taking (Computer Architecture and Design) will be useless.

But this is great news.

I guess people are misunderstanding what is actually happening. I try to explain it in terms that are easier. They are using particles that in a quantum state have the natural ability to be in two difference places at the same time and using them to transfer information.

They are not teleporting something that can't be in two places at once.

What they translate the states of the particle spin into up or down into digital code of up = 1 and down = 0, which anything digital can read. There are other states besides up and down which they can use for other things.

Funny, I thought you'd be playing Bayonetta ;)
But...but then my clothes would come off and my hair would grow long and gain epic powers...

...you're just interested in the clothes coming off part, aren't you. <_<

Bad news dude, you might actually die during it.

It would work via breaking you down into your component atoms, then beaming them to another place and reassembling them. You would in essence die during this. The person you come out as is not the same person you go in as.

It's a big philosophical kerfuffle.
