This mode is so much damn fun... though I can't seem to get an A. It's so exhilarating running through the mines with 16 zombies and a reaper chasing you!

Anyone who didn't find the campaign mode of Resi 5 challenging enough will get thier rocks off in mercenaries.

Does anyone know how to get an A in the mode or have any general tips?

man i wanna play that game...
resi 4 mercenaries was a blast, not sure how similar it is to resi 5 but the best advice i can give you is to keep moving. stay in one place too long and they'll get you from behind

oh, and aim for the head obviously lol

hope that helps =)

happy to tell you that it is pretty much identical to the mode in resi 4 but you are at a MAJOR disadvantage this time because the menu has to be accessed in real time, which makes switching items very fiddly. it's a tiny flaw in an awesome game mode though!

Play with a friend. A buddy and I blasted through the first 5 maps and got A's on them in one to three tries. The trick is to keep on the move and stick with your partner. Communicate when you need to reload so they can cover you. So far I have found the best weapon loadout to be the standard Sheva w/ Rifle, pistol, and Scorpion. It has 3 good weapons and a health spray. I use it because I am insanely good with the rifle. Your partner should have a shotty though "I like to keep this, for close encounters". Make sure you take advantage of envionmental kills as well, but only use them when you will kill 3 or more, otherwise, it is a waste.

A strategy we use is to kill a few near us, them run past them and get to a corner. Turn and I rifle the far ones while he shooty's anything I miss. Lather, rinse, repeat. Of coarse it gets really tricky when the mini-bosses start to show up. The trick is to find the corners where something cannot get at you from behind. Only stay there long enough to get a good number of kills, then run and get more time. Then head back.

And you are right, it is very intense but loads of fun.

Okay here are my tips, first off, use Sheva, secondly it's best to go for an A in Public Assembly first.

Now a problem I had at first was that I'd either sit in one place and go for kills, or I'd run around looking for time, what you need to do is both.

You probably won't be able to get an A before you learn the locations of all the time things for public assembly, so just go ahead and play it to learn them and practice.

It's important to remember that the more you move around the more Majini will spawn, which means the more points you'll get, generally my first impulse is to get to at least some relatively safe area like the rooftop with the bus near it and move around only as needed, but that will result in few points. however you don't want to just run around randomly.

Move around slowly, killing Majini is your top priority every time you kill all of the Majini you can see who are close to you, keep moving to the next time bonus until you bump into a couple more, kill them and keep moving.

If you know some are close behind, get a few feet between you and them, turn around and clean house, if there are too many, run past them and get a bit of distance. I make it sound rather slow but it will be very fast paced, moving often and not standing still very long at a time.

Remember, melee attacks do a lot of damage and if they get a kill, you get +5 seconds to make up for the time lost during the animation, if you are running and a Majini is down near you, go ahead and impale him.

It's important to not let your combo dictate what you do, ideally the only time you aren't gunning down Majini is when you SHOULDN'T be gunning down Majini, either because you're low on time and need to get to the next time bonus ASAP, or because you're being overwhelmed. So if your combo is about to end, it's because you're in a situation where you have more important things to worry about.

Keep an eye out for the executioner, when you see him you don't have to take him down immediately, but DON'T lose track of where he is, you don't have to be able to see him, just know where he is and where he will be coming from. (this is true for all bosses) You should try to kill him at your first opportunity, use Sheva's rifle. (it's easy to panic and only take a couple shots at a time, but you'd be surprised at how easily bosses go down when you empty a magazine into them.)

Generally the Executioner should come at you when you have about half of the time bonuses down, once he's dead you should ideally have 20,000-30,000 points. At this point you should get either all of the remaining time bonuses or enough to get a comfortable amount of time left, and then head to a high traffic area, like the area around the bus.

From there on out it should be smooth sailing, if you start to run low on time and you don't think you'll be able to get to 40,000 before it's over, go get any time bonuses remaining.

Oh and on those combo time chests, on all other maps they seemed necessary for an A (They are a good way to get well over 10,000 points easily) but my first A on public Assembly was obtained without using any, so while they'd undoubtedly help it is possible without them.

I'm thinking of writing a guide for Mercs playing, so I'd appreciate feedback on these tips.

(Also, if you want someone to help you out in duo my GT is xX Dr Hobo Xx, send me a FR)

Edit: In regards to using the menu on the fly, the X button can be used to not only organize your inventory, but also to quickly combine items, just pick up what you want to combine, and place it on the other object, much faster then pushing A and selecting combine and all that other nonsense.

But what is really useful is, you can rearrange your inventory while performing actions like climbing ladders, making it so you can place a healing item in a directional slot for quick access, or combine your herbs, without worrying about being attacked.

Wow! I expected some good tips but nothing as informative and extensive as this... well written friend! So it's 40 000 you need for an A? That's cool i'll keep trying for it... I'm getting 36- 38 000 at the moment.

The mining area is too tough for my feeble skills though, I keep getting wasted by the cheaper... I mean reaper... and the best i can manage is a 'c'. I'd take a room full of executioners over one of those bastards!

Co-oping eh? I've actually finished the campaign twice now solo and can't wait to tackle the game with a buddy this weekend... it's gonna be hard not to give into the temptation to be cheap and use my infinite ammo triple barrell shotgun though... ;)

I've not played RE5, but in RE4 the trick was to keep the combo up as long as possible, as in kill in chains, the best way to do that in RE4 was to stun the "Zombies" by shooting their knees or head shot to bring up the context sensitive special move.

While the shots themselves didn't kill them the special moves when the Zombies are stunned causes enough damage to finish them off and stun more zombies in close proximity.

So with HUNK you can headshot to stun them and make them grab their face, allowing you to break their necks, which pushes any others away from you far enough to do it again.

Hunk-neck-break-style tactics possible in this version?

I freaking loved RE4 for that.

Just watch out for them nasty bugs! ugh
The ones from the demo?
I didn't play the demo but there are two types... the nasty little buggers who jump on you and rape your face, and the fucking terrifying huge ones that have a VERY cheap (and brilliantly gruesome) one hit kill.

Both types have given me some nasty dreams... and not nasty in the good way (it would be worrying if they were...)

Ah, the reapers go down very easily once you get a handle on them. It's very hard not to panic when you see one skittering toward you and just start shooting, but if you aim for his weak spots he goes down very very quickly. When it's crawling towards you it's weak points hide and reveal themselves periodically, just aim for one of it's shoulders and start firing bursts. When it recoils and kneels you've hit your target, now it will just kneel there for several seconds showing one of it's weak points, hit that and it will bend over backwards showing you it's chest, at that point either A unload on it with an automatic weapon (don't let your ammo get away from you, fire in very fast bursts.)or if you have a pistol take careful aim and start shooting. (an automatic weapon is the safest route.)

Reapers can either scatter you and cost you the round, or they can go down easily.

Now the reason why you should get an A on Public Assembly first is that it unlocks Jill, who has a much better automatic weapon than Sheva, and a pistol that is ten times better at least.

The reason her pistol is so great is that it has an absurd critical hit rating. Someone once told me it was 80%, I don't know if it's that high, but it's definitely up there, far more often than not it gets the critical hit, the only downside is that means you gotta always aim for the head, which is a small price to pay for an 80% chance of a one hit kill. At first it may seem slow or awkward always going for head shots, but before long it becomes second nature when using her.

The Mines itself is a bit strange, I got an A on my second try (my first try I made a half hearted attempt with Sheva and lasted maybe 30 seconds), and it isn't that hard for me to get 40K, but I just can't for the life of me get much more than that.

Kudos for the skill in getting an A in the mines...

It's true what always happen s is that I panic when I see the reaper and go running around in a Benny Hill style chase with it hot on my heels. I really wish the inventory could be switched in pause time like in RE4, that's what throws me because I want to use grenades but they're after moving off to the bottom left and it's too fiddly when you're panicking!

Will keep trying for Public assembly, Jill sounds great.
