Temptation, oh temptation. I must confess, half my fun in playing this game would undoubtedly come from giving off Farking Brutal growls at every available opportunity. Think Dinosaurs That Shoot Lasers Whey They Roar without the wheeze. Taking the royal piss out of it would help.

Rock on! I've got this on pre-order, so when the insane shipping departments of Europe decide to release this ROCKING-game (i.e. Friday) to the UK, I'll have it...

I mean, ROCKING WITH IT!

Great Review. Not too interested in this myself but some of my metal friends must be messing themselves and missing class as I speak. They've waited a LONG time for this.

Good review.
Can't wait for the game to come out in Ireland. :D

I know some of the people that show up in the game but they might be a spoiler to the game.
Rob Halford, Lemmy Kilmister and Lita Ford, I'm not so sure all of them are real people though.
Welcome to the Escapist. :)

Lemmy is the main character to me.

Love your metal avatar!

Would it be a spoiler if I were to divulge whether or not there are creatures in this game that shoot lasers from their eyes?

WWWWWOOOO, I just got an email from my pre-order place - they've dispatched Brutal Legend - should be here either tomorrow or Thursday. ROCK ON!

After that, Dragon Age is next on my hit-list.

Cracking game/review though, but as there's no PC version... :(

It really upsets me that this isn't coming out for PC. After all, I'm one of many that have supported him on the platform from Monkey Island to Grim Fandango and Psychonauts. Thanks Tim.

Hey Russ the guys back at Gamestop would really like to have a talk with you about a register and some plastic guitars. Turns out they didn't find it as funny as you would did. I also misread and used their plastic guitars. I just figured I'd direct em your way since it was your idea. Good luck with that and METAL!

Seriously though, great review and I can't wait to dive into this game.

To be honest, the 'Many' part is bullshit - we aren't many, or Pyschonauts wouldn't have bombed. Hopefully though, Brutal Legend will do verrrrry well. And be ported to PC. But for now, I'm content with my XBox copy.

Definitely getting this one today. As a long-time Schafer fan and a devoted (some might say rabid) metalhead for the past three decades, it looks like a near-perfect fit for my tastes (or lack thereof).

Now of course comes the obvious question...given that:

1.) He enjoyed Psychonauts
2.) His column's "theme song" would seem to indicate he does not loathe heavy metal
3.) The game is apparently already available in Australia

...what will Yahtzee have to say about it?

I believe Yahtzee will, in actual fact, attempt to have (painful) sex with the game. And then be given a court order of some sort.

Any idea how long it's to last? This game looks amazing but I don't want another six hour game that lasts me two days. Although it does have collectables and multiplayer.

Ahhhhhhhh screw it, I'm buying it. I'll probably play through it multiple times anyway.

Well, the map looked fairly big...

I guess it depends if you go straight through the game, or explore the world any.

Dear God, for this gift from above I thank you. I was so afraid this'd turn out like Psychonauts, a great game that didn't get noticed much, or that it'd turn out to be not as good as I'd thought, but I am so pleased to learn it turned out great. I'm renting this game as soon as humanly possible. And I'm not really even a metal fan!

Why do you taunt me?! I need it now, NOW I SAY! Here's to hoping it arrives earlier than the 16th release date. Also, I'm so trying to play this with a guitar controller, which why it'd be cool for it to come out on the PC, because you could use xpadder to play it with a guitar.

He missed one, you know. Look at the News tab.

EDIT: Never mind. It's changed now.

OT: This sucks, man. All that metal awesomeness, yet I don't have a system to play it on. I don't have the cash to get the system, either.

Awesome, so f'n awesome. Getting it tonight, and I can't wait. Nice review, love the vo at the end. XD

One critic comment on the review...do you folks ever touch on sound design? I understand with this game in particular one would be more likely to be caught up in the music (which I'm always happy to hear about as well) and enjoying the good vocals (for once). But most reviews here never bother mentioning the finer details of games like sfx, level design and other artsy things.

I can see how this can be very cool if someone would like to see fit Jack Black XD A lots of stuff here, and so I'd like to know Yathzee's point of view about this. The game sounds interesting enough :)

At the time of writing I had played for 9 hours and was just over 50% complete. I dilly dally a lot though, so the game's story is probably about 12-15 hours long. I will most likely get 20+ hours out of it. Not bad.

Kinda like Fallout 3 then. My friend was done in a day or so he just ran from point A to point B. I used like 2 weeks I think, exploring, finding awesome loot and quests. For me it was point A interchange with point X then to point Q and so on.

Even though this game looks awesome, my dollars this week have to be thrown at Uncharted. I love me some Tim Schafer but I know I am going to enjoy Uncharted more.

I can see why "über-underground" metalheads are against this, but there's a reason they have no friends.

This looks like a ton of stupid fun that a metalhead like myself can easily enjoy. Plus any game with Dark Tranquillity's "Cathode Ray Sunshine" is destined for epic.

It has MIRRORTHRONE in it's soundtrack.I was sceptical at first as to whether or not the game would actually be aimed at genuine metalheads or if it had any variety within Metal for soundtrack..but that all went away when I read that MIRRORTHRONE are in it's soundtrack.

Gameplay looks fun too..

Whaaaa....

I've been playing Fallout 3 for about5-10 hours a week for over six months now and haven't even come close to finishing (I haven't even gotten to Rivet City yet, although that's next on the agenda). In all fairness I have all five expansions, too (done Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta so far). Fallout 3 is my biggest time sink outside of MMOs right now...

As for Brutal Legend, I feel like the guy with the wicked cheese-grater shiner:
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20091005

as I have no idea where this game popped up or why I should care. But I loathe heavy metal for the most part...

Hmm, I'm still not totally convinced. Every review seems to mention how awesome the style and the metal stuff is (which I can't deny, after seeing every bit of info I can find about Brutal Legend), but the gameplay itself looks shallow, both the combat and the rts-part. And the demo doesn't help either, since you can't judge a game's gameplay on the first 5 minutes. So the question is: is the gameplay shallow but is it irrelevant because of the awesomeness of everything else, or isn't it that shallow as it looks?

Now listening to Breadfan by the way. Great song, don't have a clue how I missed that one.

From what I saw while putting the review video together, it's no more shallow then swinging a sword was in Zelda. Sure, you have hit buttons to see your character swing melee weapons X into bad guy Y, but it's the setting and environment are what are really make it a fun experience.

But in Zelda the combat is only a distraction from the main experience. When I see videos of Brutal Legend it's 50% juicy metalawesomeness, and 50% combat. And in Zelda the setting and environment are integrated in the gameplay: the puzzles, the struggle to overcome a dungeon, for example.

I'll probably still buy it later this year. Maybe not now, but there is no way that I'll be able to resist this one when it's cheaper (and the competition lower). But I still wonder why all those gamereviewers seem to overlook the whole gameplay issue. Ah well, they're either blinded by their metalfanboyism, or the setting and environment totally overrule any 'average' gameplay elements.

..

Guess I'll have to pay the store a visit in the morning after all. ;)

I think you can ultimately say of any game "all you do is ...." I mean, at the end of the day, playing any game all you do is stare at the screen and press buttons in a carefully orchestrated sequence in order to make shit happen on-screen. The deciding factor should be whether or not the experience is enjoyable. And that is determined by the confluence of things like art, story, music and how well the gameplay mechanics are integrated into the whole.

Absolutely, if good games weren't more than 'the sum of all parts' I wouldn't be playing them. I've already decided to buy Brutal Legend as soon as I can (Dragon Age isn't coming out this month anyway), but in this case most reviewers seem to have forgotten to tell us why, exactly, the sum is more than the parts. The great experience that Brutal Legends seems to provide makes a detail like shallow combat irrelevant, but that doesn't mean I don't want to hear about it.

That video... is it just me, or do the worlds look a little like "if World of Warcraft was invaded by the Metal Gods"?

Fucking awesome. I didn't realize the game had that much depth. Can't wait to get it.

I can see why "über-underground" metalheads are against this, but there's a reason they have no friends.

This looks like a ton of stupid fun that a metalhead like myself can easily enjoy. Plus any game with Dark Tranquillity's "Cathode Ray Sunshine" is destined for epic.
Don't forget Deathstars and In Flames

I'm surprised no one's drawn any parallels between this game and No More Heroes yet. Similar absurd, lampshading and satirical styles, tastefully overdone visual style, a monster vehicle you drive around a sandbox map, and gratuitous violence with silly weapons and equally silly opponents. I loved No More Heroes despite its gameplay flaws, and I'm sure i'd like this.

I'm a bit of a niche metal fan myself, more into prog/alt/cyber/symphonic metal than thrash or the regular sort. But I still appreciate that sort of metal. I'd like to pick this up but unfortunately i don't have a ps3 or 360. Here's to hoping for a console port.

I'm still wondering if I'll enjoy this or not, I'm not massively into metal though I do like bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin and motorhead, but I guess there more hard rock then metal. Still I liked the humour of the demo and I've always loved the artwork on metal albums even if I dislike the music so who knows.

Now if they just make a sequel based in the world of Rock N Roll or Punk.

I am not going to get this game, and I think I might be the only one. I love metal, but I'm not excited to play a fantasy third person action game has a metal skin over it. The music will be awesome, but I play my own music when I play other games anyways. Maybe I'm just over third person action games.

This post is not to say that I don't understand why others are excited. Just to share that I, for one, am not.

Regardless of my predispotion towards metal, this will still make it onto my game shelf. Fore the sole reason of a guitar riff bringing lightning down to the earth. It really makes me wonder how this was not already done before. Though in honesty this makes me rather sad, for it will be a dark day when a Hip-Hop game/parody/celebration will come along. Mostly due to the Gangsta image most rappers have to keep active in order to keep eating.

Such hype for such a lame game. Everyone and their child wants it because it has Jack Black who all he does is act randomly and somehow becomes a god.

I would guess that 99% of the people here we sold on metal-themed world and Tim Schafer long before Jack Black was attached to the project. If you can't see that there is more to it than Jack Black, that's your loss.

Ah geez the map looks just like "Serpents Passage" in Warhammer Online... ahem *Serpents Passage* which looks just like a woman's spread eagle pelvis... get it?

One more reason I'm leery about this one.

The game in general looks like an MMORPG without the MMO, which makes me wince, but if the RTS-lite elements in multiplayer are good I still might go for it. Guess I'll wait for some YouTube gameplay vids.

I picked the game up today, and I can verify that it is indeed awesome. The environments actually look quite a bit nicer than what was shown in the review video, from what I've seen thus far. I'm kind of surprised that the reviewer neglected to mention that you can fully customize the playlist when you're running people down in the Deuce. So anyone who is enamored with Tim Schafer/Double Fine/Jack Black/Funny games that play well can turn off some of the more annoying songs, or even all of them, if they see fit.

Thanks man! For the price of a few seconds with a camera, then a few seconds with Photoshop/Gimp/etc you too can have one!

Kinda would, but I'd wager a guess to the positive either way. It -is- a Metal game after all.

I picked it up today and i've been playing it. I got to admit, at first I thought it SUCKED SUCKED HARD. The combat was choppy, eddy always seemed to fucking BOB even when standing still, the control felt wonky. The initial level, the startup, is shit. Unimpressive. You gotta play in an hour or two, then the combat suddenly Gel's, you realize how to do the things the game doesn't explain (Hint: Relic Raise everything with roses, hold X (or whatever your guitar button is) to free the bound dragon statues, and click the left stick to run.

After you get the Mouth of Metal and your first few upgrades and really get into the open world, the game just opens up to you. It get's addictive. Just one more mission, some bitchen tunes... oh, and the acting? The acting is awesome. And the writing is awesome. Seriously, seriously awesome.
Exactly what you expect to happen is what happens. What the game does there took BALLS.

Just give it an hour before you decied you hate it, I swear.

I got it in the mail today, and I have to say....

HELLLLLLLL YEAH!

Think a mix of GTA's open world with a handful of RTS and RPG elements. AND TIM-FUCKING-SCHAFER! Its theme world from the grin-on-the-face opening to the game itself.

Remember... ROCK ON! :)

Anywho, I've played more of Brutal legend now, and I can safely say the experience has only got better, and the RTS sections are good, though its just fun to drive around the world of metal in the Druid Plow.

Yeah, those are totally real people. Lemmy is the lead singer of Motorhead, and Lita Ford had here own. I recognize Rob Halford's name, but can't place him at the moment.

Seems like a cool game, i'll probably wait till summer though, already have money invested in two other games coming out this fall.

As far as I know from reading around: You will be able to collect everything you missed after beating the game. There are even things only available after you have done so.
Still got a few missions before I have beaten it. Think I am going to do some of the side-missions first though. Only done like... three or four of them. And I am 48% done or something with 5:54 on the clock. Which means it is shorter than I had hoped, but longer than what some reviewers say. Either way, I am having a blast.

Indeed, I think it depends on skill level, game level, and all that, heh - either way, its great! Very fun, funny, and exploring the world is fun too :) Sadly, I do think the main thread will be under the 15 hour mark for me, but I can always try multiplayer and finish off finding everything.

Erm, Hi there. New round these parts. First off, Mr. Editor In Chief, have you ever been told that you sound a lot like Agent Smith? Quite disconcerting that.

Anyway, to the game at hand. I have to say that after a couple of days with Brutal Legend I've had to give up on it.

It comes as a bitter blow as I had been really looking forward to this one. I'm not a metal fan, was always more of a Radiohead type music fan (which will probably result in snorts of derision from the metal faithful) but I was a big, big fan of Double Fine's previous work on Psychonauts.

The first major disappointment is that even after following this game through internet sites and physical media I was not prepared for what the actual game actually turned out to be. Even the demo didn't hint at what the game would turn out to be: a heavy metal tinged tutorial for a hack 'n' slash/RTS hybrid set in an open world.

The idea must have seemed exciting and different on paper but in reality it has turned out to be a clumsy unfocused mess. The controls are not tight enough, nor the mechanics sound enough for the game to pull off hack and slash combat with any conviction and the fact that it manages to make all aspects of micro managing troops and resourcing more convoluted in this new guise makes the game completely ineffectual as even a watered down RTS.

It really is a shame as a lot of love has obviously been poured into the world, the characters and the lore and as an homage to metal it really is unmatched. The writing snaps and fizzles along and it's got loads of nice little touches. The problem is that video games are a tactile experience and although Schaffer's time served in point and click adventures has given him a great canvas for expanding his story telling it hasn't given him much training in how to create a great gameplay moments. Great games are built on satisfying controls and mechanics, not on great story telling and it's that which needs most focus for the next Double Fine adventure. As it stands the gameplay elements seem superfluous to the creative vision and not as an intrinsic part of it's DNA.

I await the masterpiece that the studio is capable of creating, given the right focus.

The enemy leader (whom shall not be named for risk of spoilers) is so impossible to remove from the battlefield, and their forces take so many hits to kill it's truly annoying. A fat, talentless, humourless, loud mouthed, arrogant hack? Shit half of america can play that role.
And if they need help all they need to do is watch any of his "movies" as his character never ever changes. Because he is unable to play anything else, he does not have enough acting ability to.

BRÜTAL LEGEND. Ü. What the fuck. German umlauts? You don't even have German umlauts on your keyboard. I guess, just like Germans think, using english is somewhat cool, so do English people about using German.
Ä, Ö, Ü.........ha, I can do umlauts! (wow, I'm really sorry for that)

Anyways-
Jack Black and Ozzy Osbourne? Wow. What a game. o.o
Usually I like metal, but I'm not *that* big of a fan. Hm. Maybe I'll give the game a try.

Aaaahh, pronouncing "Brütal Legend" like you would pronounce the German umlaut ü sounds so silly. xD

I liked the whole "Rocktober" thing though. Thank you, Escapist.

Well, I've played the first few story missions and tooled around in the Deuce for awhile. I like it quite well, but I am a little dissapointed so far.

As I expected, the characters, world, and story are awesome. Great, funny writing, voice acting, and animation make the cut scenes a true pleasure to watch. A metalhead couldn't be more pleased.

The gameplay, on the other hand - it's not really bad or anything, just not really my cup of tea, so to speak. I never play RTS games, and so I don't really like that aspect of BL so much. If I recall correctly, when Brutal Legend was first revealed in Game Informer a good while ago, it was described as a straight-up 3rd-person action game. That's the game I wish I was playing.

Oh well. It's not bad by any means. It's quite fun just exploring, finding bound serpents and legendary artifacts (I absolutely love the myths and legends with the black and white illustrations). Maybe after awhile, I'll get more used to the RTS controls and start to enjoy it more.

Yeah the Goth Kids are really tough. Especially on the Brutal difficulty.

The only advice i can give is to make sure to take all the fan booths and try your best to vary your army with a balance of anti-vehicle, anti-infantry, and buffers.

Use the Amazons on the Fire beasts to kill hordes of regular infantry.

Use the bouncers to destroy the enemy vehicles.

The Pyro Bikers are also good against infantry.

The Killmaster bikers stun enemies and heal ur units so make sure you have few of those in each group.

Use the the Hot ROds with the turrets to tear down enemy fan booths.

When you have a lot of infantry around it helps to do your facemelter solo on your guitar.

Try to do as many double teams as possible.

Always try to remove the enemy leader first, THis prevents the enemy from taking undeveloped fan guysers and also keeps them from doing double teams on you(especially that nasty bride double team)

It took me a couple of redo's on Brutal but if I can do it anyone can.

It's fine now, completed the campaign yesterday (the day that it came out)

I've looked at this game, and really really love the concept.

Darn shame it's not coming out for PC.

this game was such a blast. i rented it and finished it in 3 sessions, now i try to get as close to 100% as possible. the game has it´s flaws, it seems to be a little buggy here and there(got stuck in walls, in battles the flag magic wouldnt work and my units would often simply not go to the flag, sometimes you have to be incredibly precise if you want to collect those spark-plug jump thingys, sometimes not), far too less combos and (useful!)stuff to buy for you if you compare to similar games. but oh, the game world! i had my fare share of metal in the past but was never a fan or something. the game got me hooked on some bands i only knew the names of. overall, everything besides the actual gameplay gets an a+. this is also one of the most impressive game worlds visually i ever got to play through, there´s so much awesome stuff with insane scale. sometimes it even reminded me of shadow of the colossus, but not that poetic more comical and, eh, brutal. but still incredibly beautiful. i will never forget freelancing to the wall of screams before i actually would have to go there and i´d never would have thought of something awesome like a giant wall of speakerboxes. as you can see, i´m unconditionally in love with this game. i will definetly buy when i have the money(and the price dropped once).

This could be the first game EVER where I don't have to mute the music and put my own on in the background.

I looked at the artists involved. We have MANOWAR in there! And 3 Inches of Blood! Fuck yes!

I'm only a few hours in, but this is already a great game. The intro, though unskippable, was fun to watch (and play). I really appreciated the way it slowly introduced new concepts without forcing you through a step-by-step tutorial.

Even if this isn't an 80 hour game, it promises to be 20 hours of great fun. The Deuce is a pleasure to drive (rare for any vehicle in a video game) and Eddie's attacks are gratuitously satisfying.

Rock on!

I'm lovin the game so far. I am concerned about the RTS elements, I've only had the first battle, and it seemed to be a bit of a cluster fuck... I had no idea what was going on.

I'm reserving my complete judgement until I've played further through.

I must admit I don't really get the complaints about the 'RTS' sections. To me, they play more like something like Dynasty Warriors than a full-blown RTS, and it's more about picking where and how to commit your Avatar and when to double-team than it is about any high-faluting tactical plan. Of course if you try to play it as a pure RTS you'll lose, because you'll be keeping one of your most important weapons out of the fight. It feels like one person trying to lead an army by shouting and waving their arms about- which is exactly what's happening, after all :)

Of course, in multiplayer you could play it 'pure' RTS if both players agreed not to use their Avatar in combat, and there's a trophy in it IIRC.

One more thing I must mention- the cleverest trophy I've ever seen. "Six Degrees of Shafer". You get it by playing multiplayer with or against someone who already has it. Think about it :)

I hate RTS games, and Brutal Legend is the first Console RTS that I really like. Why can I figure out the controls and Yathzee can't?

I play the multiplayer more than Call of Duty...it's THAT good. And I hope more RTS games take on this direction. Halo Wars would be so much more awesome if I could build a Scorpion, drive it myself, let the AI take over when I'm done, and build another if it gets destroyed.

This game deserves a lot more love than it's getting, and I'm very dissapointed in people going "THIS HAS RTS ELEMENTS AND THEREFORE IS A BAD GAME RAGE RAGE RAGE!" This is the first Console RTS that doesn't suck. The multiplayer is the best part of this game.

Would the game honestly have been better if it were just a slasher like Nintey Nine Nights? Because I'm pretty sure people would have been complaining "Oh, Brutal Legend is just a boring slasher!"

This game keeps the strategy stuff so simple I don't even need a HUD, it's amazing simple, but the game becomes as deep and complex as the RTS games I once found overwhelming. It makes me want to try Starcraft 2 when it comes out, but I do hope more RTS games take on the Action direction that Brutal Legend does.
