Am I the only one who's a little irked that they reskinned all the characters? I really think it takes something away from the charm that the original N64 version had...

And I don't think that it's really fair to criticize the graphics of the N64 versus other systems, simply because it didn't have pre-rendered scenery. I had more trouble finding doors on games like Parasite Eve than this one.

Timesplitters is way better than Perfect Dark, and Goldeneye 64 is better than all other FPS combined. Uglier than hell, but far more exciting with better challenges, better vs mode, and better stories.

And what's more random than Baron Zamedi in an Egyptian Temple? Nothing.../thread

Quite honestly, this review can go piss off. There's a reason why the game uses the same engine, and same format. Because look what happened to Perfect Dark Zero.
What part in particular did you find fault with?
It had an over-complicated cover system, the writing was hideously bad ("Shut up before I drop you like a bad conversation"? Really?), they put vehicular combat in (Just like Halo), regenerating health (Just like Halo), and it had a RETARDED story. Joanna is a mercenary who gets immediately hired by Carrington, no training ops or deployment to stop the cyborg facility (from the CANON Game Boy version). On her merry way to getting shot down over Africa, she discovers an ancient evil artifact.

The music and multiplayer weren't bad though.

You are right about one thing OP....the game IS pretty darn ugly.

However PD fans will still love it.

Perfect Dark Zero was BETTER than the first game by a factor of minus 1,000,000.
There corrected that for you

Zero had so much going for it, all they had to do was essentially remake the original with a new story and use a shiny engine and they would have been set.

instead, rare decided suck the Halo cock of shitiness and turned turned the respectable Ms Dark with a sense of wit into a Yankee-doodle whore (She had a tattoo on her NECK for god's sake) who reacted to the slightest criticism by pointing a gun at the person who made the comment.
Fixed it again. PDZ is far superior to the original. Do not edit my quotes to circumvent again please.

There is something that the review neglected to mention, and was the reason why me and my friends all got this game.
Perfect Dark XBLA edition comes with three goldeneye multiplayer maps and a slew of Goldeneye weapons for use in multiplayer.
Yes, you read that right. With the custom match options you can play the Goldeneye maps with Goldeneye weapons only. All you need to do is play the Goldeneye 64 soundtrack on the 360's media player which will mute PD's music, but not the weapon fire sounds and replace it with your Goldeneye music (not perfectly, but it gets the job done, and playing to that awesome Dam music STILL gets the blood pumping years later).

Goldeneye fans, this is as close as you're going to get to updated Goldeneye online multiplayer and it's worth every penny.
(quote added by me so that everyone notices)

So if it's superior to the original, why did you leave the minus in.

and now for some friendly advice, even i know that saying "please don't do that" on a forum is an open invitation for people to do just that, just making you aware of that.

I may be a fanboy for this game, but i am a fanboy for very good reason.

This game represents a lot of elements from the genre that i miss, the health bar that didn't treat you like a pansy by regenerating.

an armory of insane guns that were all unique.

a difficulty system that added objectives that were relevant to the mission and enemies that as you increased said difficulty became smarter, faster and would even run away to call for help rather then what is done today where they get a ramped up health bar and can accurately shoot the head of a pin at a moments notice.

these are just some of the many reasons that i consider this a cornerstone of FPS society.

I got Perfect Dark a couple days ago, I really like it so far. I never played it when it was first out.

Tip: Get a head-shot during a mission and you get a shirt for your avatar. It was a fluke that I got it, cause I didn't know it existed and of course wasn't trying for it. I had been spraying and praying with an automatic gun, because I had opened a door and there were five guys behind it. Right after I killed them, I heard a guy shout behind me, which startled me(I'm that kind of gamer), and when I was quickly turning around and firing, my hand accidentally slipped slightly off the controller, causing my aim to move up some, which resulted in the head-shot.

I meant what part of the review, given that it can "piss off." I'm perfectly aware of why PDZ was shit on toast.

Oh, man, I was always jealous of my friend who had Perfect Dark. You needed that extra hardware to play it, if I recall correctly!

you needed the memory pack to play the single player campaign, but multiplayer worked without it, but I think it only ran in half the resolution or something.

Anybody remember how N-bombs used to destroy the framerate? :L

Good review. Now, I must go get me some XBL points!

To everyone saying this game hasn't aged well or that its not a good deal...It's 800 points...
That's pretty good for the content you get. And its nice to see this game on hardware that can actually support it.
When it was on the 64 it was a lot of fun but man oh man was it choppy.

Besides not every FPS needs to be a Halo or COD clone to be a good. I wonder how we will feel about those games in a decade?

Anyhow, for me the game has aged well simply because it has bots.
I don't have to play against the XBL community which can be a nuisance at times but still get a good multiplayer experience.

One thing Perfect Dark also added to the world of gaming back then was the ability to snipe people OFF roofs and balconys.

I remember being in awe when I first played the Carrington Villa and suddenly could REALLY take out the snipers around the villa; they fell OFF! OMG!

I guess this means Joanna's back to being British? (her accent was curiously missing from the aptly titled "Perfect Dark Zero")

I remember multiplayer on the N64 was barrels o' fun, partly because you could have 8 bots running around. That many AI was unheard of in those days. Really hope they kept that number up or, dare I say, increased it.
It still is.

How many current "Most amazing FPS ever" titles are out.

A ton.

How many of them have AI for multiplayer.

What 0?

Actually, I thought one of the redeeming qualities of PDZ was that it had AI-multiplayer. I loved forgetting the story and the online aspect, and just having a bot blast bonanza...

But yeah, that's the only current-gen FPS I can think of that has a ton of AI. Then again, I don't play too many FPSs.

One of my favourite things about this game is the fact that Peter Molyneux can kill you.

Just like Miyamoto before him, just makes death matches so much more fun :p
