Hmmm, it seems the major discussion here is Nu Lara's personality. You know what? I hate her too. But it has nothing to do with the massive Electra-Complex that was suddenly dumped on her in this installment, or her newfound leaning towards being a sociopath to her friends, but it's her straight-up dishonesty that really gets me. She strolls into a hidden culture and demands that just go ahead and let go of the only life they've ever known to give HER the Divine Source, because... reasons. Lara just wants to get back at a bunch of people that wrote mean things about her daddy. I mean, the only reason that she isn't having to fight the natives is that Trinity arrived before her so she could use the locals to her own ends.

Not like Classic Croft never fucked up things but they didn't waste a bunch of poorly written dialogue on her trying to justify it. I mean, you DO break into Area 51 and all... but honestly, I really only disliked Rise of the Tomb Raider because it was boring, predictable, and very poorly paced compared to the 2013 reboot, which was at least fun. This game just rips off Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and calls it a day. I really only played it through because I had nothing else to play recently.

Screw you Square. You ain't getting a single penny from me. Hope you crash and burn.
You want the Square to 'crash and burn'? Why would you want a game developer to go under because you don't like one game or series that they make? You know how important Square is in the history of gaming right?
I don't like how they've out to this exclusivity shit. They want me to buy their product? Don't piss on me by intentionally withholding it.

Also, I care little for what they did before; that was the old square, before it became square Enix. I couldn't give a hoot what they out out now.
Should From Software crash and burn for Bloodbourne being a PS4 exclusive, even though Dark Souls III will totally be multi-platform? I hate exclusivity as much as the next guy, but you do realize Rise of the Tomb Raider will be on PS4 next year, right? Same shit is happening in reverse with the FFVII remake - I'll have to wait a year after PS4 players get it first but I'm hardly going to wish ruin on their company for it.

Amazing! I bet nobody called this!

Oh wait. Fucking everybody called this.
You mean everybody called a deal which was explicitly spelled out back shortly after it was first announced? That's a thing now?
I didn't mean the the details of the deal itself, but rather the fact that it wasn't going to particularly profit anybody involved.

Unless I'm missing something about the game selling a buttload and/or a whole bunch of people buying Xboxes in order to play it.

While I don't agree that companies should go out of business for exclusivity deals (as much as I hate them) it is kind of a dick move to make a sequel of a popular multiplatform game single platform. We shouldn't be surprised though really as Microsoft are involved and its far from the first time they have done this. (Halo and Fable for example)

In what way is the gameplay bad? It seemed incredibly competent to me; the climbing and traversal easily matches Uncharted and Assassins Creed with the combat being stronger than the former.
Cinematic presentation over gameplay, constantly minimizing player controls (e.g. in the already mentioned radio tower climbing sequence, where for the most part the only possible player input is pushing into a pre-defined direction and sometimes a button) or taking them away completely (for ridiculous shit like Lara ducking under branch!). Gratuitous quicktime events, aggravated by badly readable prompts (at least on PC). A half-baked and tacked-on skill system. A similarly half-baked and tacked-on (and illogical) upgrade system for weapons. Quicktime events. This shit. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MR6U0dnFsc] An idiotic, dumbed down collectible system. Dumbed down jumping and climbing mechanics. Puzzles dumbed down to almost non-existence. A terrible and inconsistent user interface. QUICKTIME EVENTS.

Literally the only gameplay element they really nailed down well are the shooting mechanics - which is ironic since the Tomb Raider series never was about combat.

I don't see any of that as being dissimilar to the Uncharted series, it's not unusual for games to have quick-time events and controlled sequences, not that I'm a fan of QTEs. It gives the designers a lot more control over the experience of exciting events and allows for more smoke and mirrors during those events. The animation transitions are either there for effect or may be used as a cover for some kind of background transition.

I don't agree that the 'minised controls' constantly happen although I understand what you mean, they're not as frequent as they were in Arkham Knight. I don't know what the Collectible system is 'dumbed down' from, though I'm not a fan. I will say that it's been improved in the latest game although a lot of the background story is dependent upon it which I don't think is ideal.

In terms of jumping and climbing mechanics, to me they seem more in-depth in terms of mechanics although they don't offer as much in terms of freedom. They did reduce a lot of the puzzle solving but I think that's just because they're going for a different focus.

In any case, I maintain that it's a good game. I don't think that the different focus is a detriment, it's just different. I would like to see them use the current mechanics on a more puzzle and climbing focused installment, perhaps a spin-off or something. I think they would have they talent and systems to do something pretty spectacular like that.
