If someone is already dedicated enough to send direct insults to someone via steam, then I highly doubt this new ban system will have any impact on them, as they'll just switch to doing it that way now to completely circumvent the risk of getting banned on Rocket League to begin with.

To top it off, if someone -does- try to circumvent the system in that way, then don't Steam/Xbox/etc have something in place for reporting/muting these users? Because at that point, they're harassing on a completely different platform and -that- platform is the one that needs to take responsibility.

The funny thing is - if people aren't forced to get around the system, they won't bother regardless of the consequences. Banning them from the chat does force them to use these alternative methods. Being banned from the game itself means they aren't even there to be highly offensive in the first place no matter how they try it.

Here's the problem with that logic: they have to get banned four times to get foreverially removed from the game, and this is a VERY publicly known update, given that it has a news article here and all.

The moment that first 1-day ban pops, people are going to find out about the system, and immediately seek out to circumvent it, and the fact that its a game ban suddenly does no more to help prevent abusive messages because people are now switched to the steam/xbox/sony messenger systems.

If anything an even better system would've been to not announce this at all, and then have it just be shadow-chatbans (e.g can still type in chat but only they see the message), then you've got the assholes just talking to themselves, none the wiser that noone can hear them

I think DICE got this right a long time ago, when you said banned words in their forum it just replaced them with the phrase 'lalala,' so people were lalala-ing at each other for a while until they figured out that swearing at each other was pointless.

It would be better just to scrub the words out of chat like other games do.

How exactly would banning someone who only says insults and slurs from the chat reduce everyone else's enjoyment if it means they go from hearing slurs to not hearing slurs 🤔

Also, what about people who speak a different language than the rest of the team, or people on a discord/skype call with friends while playing so they can't focus on the chat, or people who really only use the chat to make/respond to jokes and not actual team communication, or people who don't like to use the chat at all and just play the game? Should we -also- start banning those people from the game because they're "reducing the enjoyment of others" by not communicating gameplay-related things via the chat?

Also Also, what does someone being a racist have to do with their ability to play Soccer-But-With-Cars-N-Stuff? Especially if they've been banned from the chat, then from your perspective they just aren't typing, how will you magically know they're a racist and not one of the examples above?

If these people are "toxic" in the sense that they start griefing or intentionally fucking up the game then sure, give them the boot, but if they're someone who actually plays and makes an effort to help the team score a win, why make the punishment completely disproportionate to the crime?

Banning words does not erase the enmity in the hearts of those who would utter them. All it does is spray perfume on feces. Just accept the reality of your environment and try to endure it or don't play the game. I see this as an ineffectual publicity move with no there there.

This is not an effective solution. The words aren't the problem, it's how the words are used that's the problem. If you start banning words people will just find other words to use to harass and insult each other, and if you add those words to your banned list before long players won't be able to say anything.

I've seen censor bots that mindlessly parse chat for predefined strings like that implemented very poorly, and if the words that trigger the system are not disseminated (and thus, I imagine, not indicated in chat) this could end up as bad AS Some of the worst cases I've seen. At any rate, I guess I'll be concerned this may be too drastiC UNTil proven wrong.

I have heard the longer version of it. You're right. Like I said, that post was done tongue in cheek. However, I did it to make people stop and think for a moment about censorship for a minute.

So how can anyone avoid them?
People will just get banned and won't know why, then they'll come back and get banned again.
There will probably be a word or 2 on there that is offensive to nobody but 5 people and there will be a ton of bans because of that.
The community will drop in numbers because people will get tired of it.

Also, and this is just my jaded cynicism speaking, I'm willing to bet money that they'll only ban racial slurs towards some races and not others.

Call me a closed-minded traditionalist or whatever, but part of the internet for me is the toxic anonymity combined with freedom of speech and concept. It would be like playing Eve Online without all the scammers and cutthroat drama. Better perhaps, but just not the same.

And people need to get over themselves. Words are words and only have the power someone affords them.
