I searched and found nothing of the sort, so please don't burn me at the stake if I am wrong.

Why is it that every game must have a tacked on love story. I can appreciate some like HL2's (Although not playing the first one made me a bit confused as to why Alyx was Gordan's gf), but cheesy romance scenes are ever present be it halo or PoP. Is it that essential that the 14 year olds have something to fap to when playing an otherwise great game?

I don't think Alyx is Gordon's lady. She obviously feels for him, but it's nothing official.

OT: To reach a certain market or something? It escapes me, I've never really thought of it.

CoD4. Amazing game, I don't think there's one woman in it. Assassins Creed, again no named woman (that I remember), Resistance 1, Resistance 2 and Mercenaries 3. Just listing a few of the games I own that don't have romances. Was going to say Burnout Paradise, but I think the DJ may love the cars.

Whats the point of being a badass action hero if you don't get laid?
Perfect answer. What will you save the world for, if not a hot chick?

Its like that in many movies too.

Also, you have it all wrong about Alyx and Gordon. They are not together. Yet ;)

What if you're a gay hero?
And what if you just like like to live in the world?
Psh. Who has that mindset? :p
And if you're gay? I guess you better have a but-budd boyfriend.
Damn you South Park for making me think of that first!

I have no problem with good romances, its the cheesy and poorly written ones where its basically "Oh the plot says I love you so now let us fuck."

I have no need for a relationship but I would save the world for videogames and books.

Vladmirr Propp's idea that in every story, there's a hero, a villian, a damsell in distress and something between them.

I have a media exam Monday and I knw he will be mentioned ¬¬

There was a relationship between Jackson and the pilot he saves if you know what I mean.

Joking aside, romances are really unneeded most of the time, and yes, it sucks when one is crammed in.

I think it's just developers thinking that a game storyline needs to resemble a movie storyline and will therefore crowbar in a love interest in the name of wholesomeness and justifies whatever the player character may do with the magic excuse of love.

Although, there was a mod for Morrowind called 'The White Wolf of Lokken Mountain' where there was a love interest and because it was the focus of the plot and the relationship evolved, in fact I think it was the only wedding I would ever consider having.

^Exactly what I was thinking. Too bad they all die from the nuke though...

I kinda liked Cortanna in Halo as Master Chief couldn't possible have feelings for her because of his genetic improvements (Am I wrong?) but yet he retains unyielding will to save her. Though the actually process and plot placement were pitiful.

I think it just makes the story more involving if you can link a character/love interest to the process of saving the world. I mean "screw the Kingdom of Hyrule, I'ma coming Princess Zelda!"

I'll make bullet points:
1) Alyx is not Gordon's girlfriend. I mean, they've JUST met. Like, right there, in the first level. There's obviously a bit of attraction, but it's handled excellently.
2) Also, the plot of PoP does not include a romance. Elika and the Prince obviously feel some sort of bond for each other, evidenced by his lecherous comments and her will to save him no matter what. It's not tacked on, it's subtly built into the dialogue and some of the body language.
3) Love stories in games can work exceedingly well. I'm guessing you have NOT played Dreamfall, so I won't spoil it for you, but there's an interesting semi-triangle going on there. Also, Rei and Yuu in Fatal Frame III. AND, Shephard and (whoever you like) in Mass Effect.

What example can you provide of a good love subplot (or even main plot!) in a game? I'd like to know what kind of thing sparks your interest.

I'd definitely give up sex for music.
In other words, I'd rather die a virgin than go without music for the rest of my life.

EDIT: Double posting mayhem! Sorry.
