Oh God, you just gave me the best Idea for getting girls into gaming! The Chick-Flick video game! But I am no writter.
This would simultaneously ruin the gaming industry and make it infinitely better.
-_- please spare us. No chick-flick anything.

Prolly Fable 2 it is so romantic you dance to have people fall in love with you.
Or fart. Farting works well too. (I WISH I was joking.):p

The romances in Baldur's Gate 2 are still up to par, despite being among the first ones in video gaming. Later Bioware efforts have had potential as well, but have so far been underdeveloped.
As stated above, the Prince of Persia games have some nice examples, and the new series show promise too...even though the game has mostly banter, the ending had one of the top ten Most Stupid Romantic Thing Done By A Fictional Character moments ever.:p
And let's not forget Yakuza 2, which has a GREAT romance - apart from bickering and fighting enemies together (double-teaming special combos!), it even has a cutscene of our tough-as-nails hero winning her a teddy bear at a UFO catcher machine (those claw thingys at the arcade, you know). And the ending is BEAUTIFUL. [spoiler/]Inescapable rooftop, rain, near-fatal wounds, an unstoppable time bomb - what better circumstances for a first kiss (and unspoken but very, very obvious I love you's)?
"Are you afraid?"
"Yes...But I've never felt this warm before."
Countdown reaches zero. Roll credits.

DOUBLE SPOILER:

They don't die. The bomb had a timer but no fuse...which we aren't told until after five minutes of credits. There! All's well and you can (and SHOULD) play the game without fear of it ending too unhappily:) [/spoiler]

I dont know... Mass Effect?
Mass Effect's romancing mechanics are hilarious.
I was at a party and I wanted to see if Commander Shephard's tactics for getting women in bed would work in the real world. You should have seen me trying (not actually) to pick up women that night:

"What do you know about the Geth?"
"..."
"What did you think of our last mission?"
"..."

Needless to say, I think interrogating someone about Saren is a lot sexier in the world of Bioware than in practice.

I always thought Final Fantasy VIII had a nice love story between Rhinoa and Squall, all complemented by the moving song 'eyes on me' (Aside: I really have to get around to learning that on the piano at some stage...)

Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy X/X-2.

And I have to admit that those being my prime examples of romance in video games is kind of sad, as much as I love them.
I agree. the love story is the biggest reasons those games are among my top games. there's another game. a PS2 JRPG and i just can't think of the name right now. oh well. the FF games tend to be full of romance with the exception of FF12

Ico.

Seeing Ico help Yorda around is simply adorable.
Thank god someone finally mentioned Ico... the story was so beautiful and the table turning ending made me all weepy.

MGS3
the only romance, fictional or otherwise, I took a geniuine interest in, and had a (mild) emotional response to.

No. Too over the top. FFVIII maybe.
Not totally on track, but I'm wondering what Valve are going to do with Gordon and Alyx in the end. Probably just leave it up to the imagination or kill one of them. It would be nice if they got together but that would be tricky to present in the manner of the Half Life games what with it being 100% first person with no cutscenes. Who knows.

There was one cutscene in episode 2, they just don't use it often. Away, they could easially fade to black and catch up with them later, but I find it unlightly. Not in the middle of a fucking war.

I'm going to throw in Flower into this mix.

The range of emotions it takes you through is breathe-taking, I also think it helps stimulate anything you yourself are going through in a positive manner. The emotions and presentation of the game itself, I think, is also quite a romantic fantasy.
