Welcome, friends, to this Roman RP. If you choose to join up you'll experience such things as you've never seen before. Mad druids, corrupt centurions, raging elephants and much, much more. This RP centres around a band of Roman Legionaries on an expedition from Rome to explore the realms of the Empire that they've conquered. This land is positively bursting with hostile peoples, machines of war and Celtic fury.

So, the rules:

Please try to keep your characters and their actions within the realms of believability. However, try also to keep your character as interesting and original as you can. A bit of fantasising is allowed, but things like magic swords/shooting fire from one's hands etc. is not allowed.

Grammar doesn't matter too much (I'm not going to criticise anyone for it), but try and keep it at least reasonable, that'd be a huge help.

Finally, all the normal rules of RP still apply (no trenchcoating, no spamming, no RPing another player without their permission). You get the idea, read the RP guidelines for more.

Now, on to the character sheet:
--------------------------------------------

Name: Glabrio Vespus

Place of Birth: Talabriga

Profession: Commander (Choose any Roman profession you wish, although try to keep it relevant, e.g. Soldier, druid, archer etc.)

Age: 29 (Remember, most people didn't live much longer than 45/50)

Appearance: A wavy-haired man of average height and build. Is usually seen wearing Roman military uniform. Glabrio has a slightly hooked nose, much like the infamous Emperor Julius Caesar.

History: Glabrio was born in the town of Talabriga, in what is now Portugal. He joined the Roman army at the age of 21, and has been a soldier ever since. His skills lie chiefly within the realms of close combat and leadership, as he can barely hit a target with a spear or a bow. He can be known to get overly aggresive, and has a very short temper. Glabrio is also a devoutly religious man, and prays to all the Gods (Mars especially) before entering into combat. While not particularily wise, Glabrio possesses a great talent for inspiring and leading people.

--------------------------------------------
Story:

Glabrio strode through the crowded streets of Rome, clutching the scroll that contained his orders, direct from Emperor Domitian. He unfurled it once more, not quite believing what it read:

For the eyes of Commander Glabrio only.

My Glabrio, you have proven much skill and bravery since you joined the Roman Army, as well demonstrating great oratory skills, both of which shall come in useful on the coming assignment.

As you know, though our Empire spans half the globe, we are unable to monitor it all. We require someone who is able to inspire fear of the great Roman Empire back into the hearts of our subjects. I have chosen you, Glabrio, and a group of various other accomplished proffesionals of whom I have also selected to accompany you. You must travel the Empire, striking fear into the hearts of our subjects once more with demonstrations of your might. You are to meet your associates at the temple of Mercury in the Subura district. I have told them to meet you there before the day is out.

But be warned, for there are many who will seek to stop you, even kill you. If you die, I am in no doubt that you will spend eternity in paradise, and that you will die a noble death.

Good hunting, My Glabrio.

Still excited, Glabrio pushed open the doors of the Temple of Mercury, and awaited his companions eagerly.

Name: Travian Arectus

Place of birth: Gaul [ ancient france ]

Profession: Archer

age: 21

appearance: a young man, his dark hair is usually strung behind him in a ponytail, giving him many a strange look in the city of Rome. His bow can usually be seen strung along his back, a short stabbing sword at his right side and a quiver full of arrows on the other. green eyes.

Story: Travian strode through the busy and loud streets of Rome, smiling at preety young girls along the way. it would be quite some time before he had any pleasure in his life with this next assingment, travelling around the Empire to the depths hells and back, he though. he questioned perhaps stopping of at one of Romes many taverns, having a few drinks and enjoying a bar maid's presence's before heading to the temple, but he chose against it. he had not even met his other Legionaries yet. he did not want to make them angry by being late.

OOC: Little known fact, ceasar was never Emperor, he declared himself Dictator for life, not emperor. the title first emperor of Rome went to Ocativan, hsi nephew

Glabrio knelt down by the altar and prayed silently. He prayed not only for the blessings of all the Gods, but for a curse upon his enemies. As he cast two denarii into the pool before him, with the majestic statue of Mercury in its center, he rose from his kneeling place and his hand brushed against the hilt of his sword, sending adrenaline coursing through his body. He once more eagerly awaited his companions, wondering what sort of men or women he may encounter.

Heck, I would play but I only know very little about ancient Rome, even then it's mostly mythology and about the legionnares.

That doesn't matter, don't worry about it. The more players the better.

Okay

Name: Abdul Masr*

Place of birth: Tyre

Profession: Foreign auxillary close-combat specialist/merchant (He is Phonecian after all)

Age: 25

Appearance: A giant of a man very-well muscled, light-brown in skin colour with a full beard, dark eyes and a hooked nose. Wears a studded leather jerkin with a robe that ends at his knees and sandals.

History: Born a son of a wandering trader, Abdul lived a good life and learned many languages as he grew older he began to grow bored and decided to join the Roman army and travel the world more and do good for the world. Not a very religious man he simply trusts in his axe and shield above all.

Story: As his boat pulled into the harbour, Abdul saw the wonderous city of Rome again. It had changed since his last visit as a boy. He payed the boat-man and made his way through the busy streets of Rome, with many heads turning as he walked past, eventually he reached the Army building and waited until he was given a troop.

Fun fact while we are at it, Masr is Egypt in Arabic (pretty sure) because he was originally going to be Egyptian then I remembered Phonecia(sp?) was around in those times. As I said before I'm winging it on facts so if I do something wrong then tell me and I'll edit. *hehe just saw that was still here, the Ra bit I mean

Abdul was smiling to himself, he frightened the recruiters by responding in perfect Latin, atleast they told him where to go. The temple of Mercury people and their beliefs he thought as he shoved the massive double doors aside and saw two men in army garb at the end of the building, he approached them slowly.

out of character.

I'm so in. Just give me a minute to whip up a sheet. But I would like to know roughly when is this happening? I'm assuming some time after the end of the Republic but I would like to be sure.
The reign of Emperor Domitian (or Titus Flavius Domitianius, to give him his full title), so let's say.....AD 70?

(The quest doesn't really correlate too much with actual reality, it's more of a plot thing, rather than a historical thing.

Also, sorry to be picky, but could you put all OOP posts in spoiler boxes.

Actually, while I'm at it, what does OOC actually stand for? I ask this because I've always used OOP, meaning Out Of Persona. Could it possibly mean out of character?

"Gentlemen!" Glabrio yelled in his booming voice, as he rushed to greet the first two members of his team. "We only have need of a few more warriors, before we set out in our noble journey to the far reaches of Europe." As Glabrio spoke, an old (old for the time, anyway) man shoved past him, looking very hurried. He accidentally knocked Glabrio's shoulder, causing him to spill his vinum.

"Senex!" cried Glabrio. "What an old fool, you should watch where you are going, blockhead!"

I'm not hopeless at insults by the way, "blockhead" was a widely used Roman insult.

Abdul looked at the two smaller men and asked their names finding out their names were Glabrio and Travian, as soon as he learnt their names he immediately continued with "Europe, barbarians and celts...wonderful" he brandished his large axe about then banged it against his massive shield.

Nero pushed open the doors to the Temple of Mercury looking quickly at the assortment of men gathered.
"I'm guessing one of you is Commander Glabrio. Mind telling what it is you want with me?"
His eyes stuck to the Roman and his uniform, recognising it instantly he knew this wouldn't just be a boring meeting for some old senators to talk about half baked plots and schemes.

Abdul welcomed the new member and again turned back to Travian "Last question, is everyone in the empire so damn tiny!?" and with that he made a point of looking down at the three present members. Without waiting for answer he turned to Glabrio and said "Commander, when do we march? my axe hungers for the blood of the blue-men" and again he swung his axe around, barely missing a few columns and statues.

Name: Marcus Sevius Orosius

Place of Birth: Callaecia (Roman province in Hispania)

Profession: Skirmisher

Age: 27

Appearance: Tall and muscular, Marcus is the model recruit for the Roman army. He is easily distinguished by his tanned complexion and his light brown eyes, which tells the tale of many battles seen. His rugged face and unkempt hair speaks volumes about the years he spent away from home. On duty, he is found wearing the standard light cavalry armor and carrying a light oval shield and a javelin.

History: Marcus was born in the town of Bracara Augusta in Callaecia; a north-west Roman province of Hispania. He was brought up on a farm, where he spent much of his childhood hunting and foraging and supporting his family. His favorite pastime was riding the horses of the Douro Valley and hunting for wild game armed with only a javelin. Things were peaceful, for awhile at least.
Rome's military expansion meant that the number of Roman troops in the region had to increase; this put a strain on the local farms. Facing economic burden as a farmer, Marcus, joined the Roman army in hopes of securing a stable income to support his family. It didn't take long for the Roman generals to notice that Marcus had a natural talent in the front lines. He wasn't specially coordinated with heavy armor and heavy weapons, Marcus was quoted as saying he found them "too heavy and unwieldy", he preferred the greater mobility brought on by the lighter daggers, the javelin, the gladius (short sword) and the bow. He also was noted for his skills on a mount. Fate it seemed had cast the farmer from Callaecia as a front line Roman skirmisher.
He spent years on the battlefield, harassing the enemy with his bow and javelin and pursuing them relentlessly on horseback but for once, Marcus finds himself on a less bloody mission. He was on his way to Rome.

Story: It had been hours since he had passed the gates of Rome. Marcus had spent the last few days traversing across Northern Italy to get to this city and even thought he had been to Rome before he couldn't help but feel lost withing its walls. The streets were abuzz with life and noise and the air was thick with the smell of food, incense and dust. His eyes were assaulted with a spectrum of colours and the noise of the merchants and the livestock were deafening. For a country boy like Marcus, Rome, was a very strange place.

He looked at the scroll that was given to him a few days ago. The temple of Mercury in the Subura district, it read. "Well this can't be it" Marcus noted looking at a dead end. It took a bit more searching but sheer luck guided him to the temple. Inside were four men that were discussing something intently.

"Commander Glabrio?" he asked looking around at the four men.

Name: Gaius Cuprius Scaurus
Place of birth: Slums on Jaculine hill (rome)
Profession: freelance spy/assassin
Age: 21
Appearence: short and wiry, with curly black hair and a long beaklike nose. He only shaves once a week, meaning he almost always has stubble. His eyes are his most distinguishing feature about him. They are black - not the iris, but what would be white on a normal person. He rarely talks, and when he does, it comes as a slight surprise, as it is very easy to forget he is there. He wears almost exclusively dark grey and black
Story: He lived in Rome all his life, orphaned at the age of 5. His big brother took care of him, and taught him how to pick pockets, break locks, and the art of stealth. His world was turned upside down when his brother was hanged for stealing a pig when he was 13. Starving in the streets of Rome, he was contracted by an imperial legion officer to infiltrate a city in greece to learn of its garrison. The boy performed admirably, and the officer had him do many more assignments as his private "street urchin" at the age of 15, he was ordered to do rather more clandestine tasks - make sure Greek captains went missing, poisoning wells, and sabotage to name a few. by the age of 20, he was well respected by the right sort of people to get him a job.
Story: He recieved a note from captain Glabrio Vespus, saying there would be work for an experienced spy. Realizing it was an imperial contract, he jumped at the chance to get a job that would by food for more than just a week or two.

Gaius enters the temple of Mercury. and stalked up to Vespus. "I am here. scouting job. Require, 100 denarii.

(by the way, REALLY glad no-one decided to make this exact same person, but a chick)
