A pacifist who uses corporal punishment? Makes sense.
I assumed that Charles was the young bear on the receiving end of the slap.
Since the strip is called roots, that what i assumed as well
This was all my line of thinking as well. Probably the reason he's a pacifist.

Think Charles and his family as african american and the word "Teddy" as "******". Then the strip will make sense.
I really don't think an explanation was necessary.

It's pretty obvious.
I didn't get it, and I'm glad he explained it.
You must be loads of fun at comedy clubs :D
I don't know any comedy clubs in my city, probably there aren't any, and I wasn't born in America or any other country with English as primary language.

Best part of the whole strip is "The Allegory of The Cave Bear"
Yes. That is the best part. That was just PERFECT!

"' The Enlightened Bear returned to the Cave to tell the other Bears what he had saw, and what he had learned. But they became angry that he dared to question the life the Puppet Masters had laid out for them, and tore him to shreds with their claws, and their teeth, persecuting him for being a free thinking Bear.

"' So you see', concluded Socrates D'Bear, 'Why we are who we are'. And he left his pupil to think over what he was taught."

For a minute, I was confused. Then I remembered Erin's co-workers.

What's is Charles problem with Teddy Roosevelt? What did he ever do to him?
For that matter, what ever happened to Penny?

Charles is a Republican and Penny is a tea party candidate in Georgia. Being obsessed and scary is no hindrance in the tea party, in fact it helps.
She is? As a Georgian, I might have to vote for her on principle, then. Just to support my totally not local webcomic.

This was a great strip, I'm just unconvinced it was a Critical Miss strip.

You shouldn't have reminded me of Scary Penny. I love her. I demand you bring her back! Heed my cry!

Makes sense, I just had a culture-clash with the modern 'nigga' stereotype (inferring that it was recent) and the art change.
