Well, after playing FF XIII, I'm kinda traumatised now, and it made me think:
Why haven't I seen an old fashioned, turn based RPG in a while? Fallout 3 and most other recent RPG's are good, don't get me wrong, but I kinda want something turn based now. Does anyone know of any good RPG's that are turn based on the PS3?

For discussion, have you played any good RPG's recently?

Well I recently put together a team that is in the early development stages of making an old-school SNES-style RPG. But I'll get back to you in a year or so on that one. :p

I've heard great things about Lost Odyssey, but have yet to play it, and I think it's 360 only. Beyond that, there are plenty of classic Super Nintendo ones I'm sure you haven't played, but again you'd have to get them originally or emulate them (which I am not necessarily condoning).

Also, it's not turn-based really, but The World Ends with You on the DS is one of the greatest games I have ever played. Seriously, go play it.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions on the PS3, lol. Unless you get Final Fantasy VII, VIII, or IX off the PSN.

Aren't almost all JRPG's turn-based?

Uhmm I have never played a turn-based RPG, but I heard Eternal Sonata might be good. Yes it's on the PS3.

Turn based?

Why would you want turn based?

It completely ruins the flow of things for me.

I miss the old school JRPG's I still worship the old Final Fantasy games, some of my favourite childhood moments were spent in those games.

Because no-one asked you what you thought, he asked for turn based games.

If you haven't played it, I'd really recommend Final Fantasy IV (probably my favorite of the series), but for the PS3 there's only Valkyria, and well, Final Fantasy XIII... But beh

Valkyria Chronicles is good. Get it.
That was my first thought too until I remembered it's mostly turn-based strategy.
Eh, so it's a STBRPG rather than just a TBRPG. It's still good.

I apologise for expressing my opinion, I obviously misjudged my right to do so.

Because TURNS are what we had before we had computers to moderate simultaneous action and once we had that we realized turns aren't as fun :)
aww, i'm joshing you mostly. I have noticed most games that would have been turn-based have been slowly turning into "pausible real time" games - which i was slow to like but have won me over.

This isn't ps3, but I became a big fan of the UFO series, playing afterlight right now with the little lady - the pausible lets us "take turns" with our respective squad members.

This may be before your time, but XCOM:APocalypse was the game that finally converted me - it had both turn and real-time ( pausible ) modes, and i started that game as fervently traditional turn-based.

As an aside, it amazes me that most "RPG" 's are really just squad-level combat games in a campaign setting/storyline - yes, I realize that's where RPG's come from - but i think the term is as abused as hell. Like I said, that's where they come from.

You obviously posted a completely useless post, that pretty much said "I don't like what OP is asking." It's completely unproductive.

Also, found some more:
Sacred 2
Cross Edge
Eternal Sonata
Enchanted Arms <---- looks like this might be worth a shot btw.
EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX5Fk8pgL7A&feature=fvw here's a link with gameplay of Enchanted Arms, it looks really good.

I would sugest renting enchanted arms first its a good game but its got some of the worst voice acting ive ever heard (but since youve play FF games before you should be able to look past that:) and it also helps that you can put it on japanese:)

Hmm, can't really think of any good ones on the PS3, although that's likely due to my lack of owning one. If only I had $300 sitting around somewhere...

For discussion, I've recently been playing Persona 3 FES for the PS2, and it's amazing. I'm surprised at how well they balanced the seemingly different aspects of managing your everyday life and fighting the Shadows during the Dark Hour, as well as how intelligent your party members' AI is. It also just so happens to be turn-based, so if you have a PS2 (or a backwards compatible PS3) and can find a copy, try it out.

As for older games, I'd have to agree with classic NES/SNES games like Final Fantasy (although, IV through VI actually used early versions of the ATB system). If you're not against emulation, you could also try out Shin Megami Tensei with the English translation patch. It's turn-based, and is pretty fun if you have the patience for it.

Eternal Sonata
Now don't get me wrong, there are some really good parts to Eternal Sonata. The battle system is funky and the light/dark mechanic works well, the music is nice (as befits a game centred around Chaupin) and the visuals are pretty.

But god damn does the pacing ever suck. It goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. It's honestly a lot worse than I ever found any Metal Gear Solid game to be. I still haven't finished it because it just doesn't *go* anywhere.

FFX was great. In fact, it's true turn based. No active time or anything. You can switch characters without losing a turn, and see the turn order in advance. It has a great story (aside from a particular annoying side villain) and an enjoyable soundtrack. Eternal Sonata is all I can think of for the PS3 though

There are times for action RPG's, and I want turn based because White Knight Chronicles and FF 13 kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. White Knight Chronicles telling me to press X to do combos mislead me into thinking I was playing Legend Of Dragoon. FF 13's beginning combat is too slow, what with auto battle kinda picking charge/grenade like I would have the whole time. Anyways, the whole flanking the enemy, getting a pre-emptive attack thing kinda screamed PERSONA! at me. Just, with less input from the player. And if it's supposed to be a bare bones "RPG" without the tactical, or action subtitle, I expect turn based combat.

I tried playing that game, and combat was tedious, or unfair, because no matter how I built my character, I would always end up getting stunned, then having my kill stolen, or attacking, missing, or doing really weak-ass damage, and dieing in the process. I'm not hating the game, because my friend had more luck than I did, but I couldn't get into it.

Anyways, I already have FF IV-VI emulated on my computer. And I already planned on getting Persona, because I actually just got an old, second hand PS2 recently.

Mass Effect 2 is a Third Person Shooter not RPG

OT: Currently I'm liking Fallout 3 again.
