What a joke.

edit

On topic: Don't be ridiculous. If she wants to play a rpg or other game let her pick it. Just because she's a girl doesn't mean she can't decide things for herself. Show a varied list of games and describe each briefly to her. Let her pick.

Both KotOR and Fable: TLC are good starting RPGs.

Fable is immensely easy, but fun to play. Good stepping stone to get started.

Noob girlfriend? more like boob girlfriend. HA HA ha ha humph well, yes, anyways...

I'd suggest getting a classic turn-based JRPG. You know the kind where everybody lines up neatly and politely take turns. The slow and easy battle system and largly on-rails story will help warm her up to gaming. Sorry if I can't throw out a specific name, I haven't been keeping tabs on recent releases and games I'm buying don't have the turn system anymore. Final Fantasy is always a good bet though. RPGs are a bit of a hardcore choice for a newbie though so you may want to steer her into some friendlier seas though.

Well, nintendo abandoned RPG fans years ago in the N64 era and we have seen nary an rpg on any nintendo systems since, so wii users best be looking elsewhere for good rpgs (sole exception: tales of symphonia for the gamecube).
I'm sorry, you seem to have forgotten:
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
Pokemon Colosseum/Pokemon XD
THE FUCKING ABUNDANCE OF RPGs ON THE DS.

Damn.
Seriously? You would rather have POKEMON than:

Legend of the Dragoon
Shadow Hearts
Persona 3 and 4
Disgaea
Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10, 12
Final Fantasy Tactics
Kodelka
Grandia 1, 2 and 3 (not xtreme!)
Xenogears
Tales of Destiny 1 and 2
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Legendria
Panzer dragoon saga
Parasite Eve
Star Ocean 2, 3 and 4
Valkarie Profile 1 and 2
Castlevania SOTN
Legend of Legaia 1 and 2
Wild Arms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
Front Mission 3 and 4
Breath of Fire 3 and 4
Morrowind
Knights of the Old republic 1 and 2
Oblivion
Suikoden 1-5
Lunar 1 and 2
and the list goes on and on... I really haven't even mentioned any of the games in THIS console generation either.

When Nintendo failed to change with the times and produce a cd format system back in the mid nineties it sent all their heavy hitter 3rd party over to sony (well, working designs was over at sega then, but they eventually went to sony). Ever since then they have failed to make an impression on the rpg market. The N64 had the horrible Quest 64, which was a complete failure. Gamecube had a port of Skies of arcadia (that was fairly good, but I already owned it on my dreamcast) and Tales of Symphonia (which japan got for the ps2, and I will always envy them for that!). I also heard a couple of people mention fire emblem, which I have never personally played, but I do own an anime by that name.

It's not even a matter of casual vs hardcore. It's sheer quantity and quality that keep me away from nintendo. A couple of years ago I wouldn't buy an Xbox for the same reason, they had yet to impress me with an rpg worth buying the system for. Once Morrowind came out, I bought an Xbox for that game alone. Later on I added KotOR 1 and 2, Fable, Jade Empire and Morrowind GotY, but you really have to question the wisdom of buying a system for a bare handful of games. Xbox360 on the other hand has been getting an astounding number of rpgs lately. I'm really glad I chose to support microsofts system in this generation, despite my years of joy with sony.

Back in the ninties I was a nintendo fanboy. I even owned a gameboy, which was the last handheld system I will ever own. RPG's and handheld systems have always been in a sort of love-hate relationship. When you play an rpg on a handheld system it's like reading a book with bad lighting and limited battery life (not to mention small writing). I played Pokemon back when it was just blue and red. It was a decent game back then, for a handheld thing. All the new re-releases of old sprite based rpgs for the ds is nice, but I played them back on the original systems on a big screen tv, where each sprite was 3 inches tall!

Nintendo was fun. Hell, even now there are a few releases for the wii I would play, but If you sit me down with a copy of FFXIII and a brand new Pokemon game, 10 times out of 10 I will be playing FFXIII.

Okami might be a really good one for her. Easy difficulty level, good story, and gameplay that's pretty easy to grasp.

I'd go for the first Fable. It's quite simple, gameplay-wise, and doesn't take itself too seriously, so it should be a nice introduction to the RPG genre.

If even that is too much to handle for her laptop, maybe you can try The Bard's Tale [http://store.steampowered.com/app/41900/]. I haven't played it myself (yet), but I heard many good things about it. Quite a humorous game with solid and relatively easy to pick up gameplay.

After that you could move on to games like KotOR, providing she likes Star Wars, or even older games like Arcanum, Planescape or the original Fallout's. Those are quite difficult though, and I wouldn't recommend them to an RPG 'newb'.

For the Wii, you could get The Legend of Zelda, both Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. Sure they're not technically real RPG's, more adventure games, but heck I think they play like RPG's every now and then.

But of course there are 'proper' RPG's for the Wii as well like Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers and even Super Paper Mario. But mind you, they're mostly JRPG's, some people don't fancy that.

Try Mass Effect.

Its very cinematic.
I'd like to second this, but I'm not sure whether or not her laptop can run that. ME isn't the most efficient port out there.

Morrowind? NO. That's hardcore but i tell everyone to get it.

Maybe KotOR, she can be a female. Torchlight, Diablo 2?

I disagree, the first game i ever played as a child was FF7, and i 100% it without fault.

Early final fantasy games are a good choice, they've got a nice difficulty curve and mechanics which follow the 'simple to learn hard to master' rule.

No. no. no. no. no.

EASING her in? that will be a tad difficult don't you think?

OT: You probably shouldn't start off with an RPG if your GF has had no gaming experience.

THIS

i dont mean to be sexist but RPGs need SOME experiance with gaming, mainly because you are placing a personality you want, or even your own, into a vitrual thing. also the actual gameplay! so many things to explore, so much story to delve in and analise, just try something simpler. i am not a pc gamer, but i will tell you what i know. fable 2 is a good beginners RPG. possibly bioshock. assassins creed 1 and 2 arguably.

if you want to set her off at a run try diablo, one or two. but just keep it between you two, other gamers can be... difficult to get used to.

the eventual objective are games like dragon age and mass effect. or hell even dnd

Dude, if she's had no "gaming experience" then let her be unless she's told you she wants to try it out... And if she does, then give her something simple and fun like Crash Bandicoot or Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter or Spyro... RPGs are NOT the type of game you want to be getting first timers into, because it could possibly put them off games forever. I'd suggest Carmageddon too but that has shit graphics and she might not enjoy bursting open civilians with a car.

The Longest Journey or its sequel might actually not be a terrible place to start.

Not really an RPG, I know, but it's slow-paced enough for someone who isn't used to gaming, but good enough that it will leave a positive impression. Also, a female protagonist is probably what you want in this case.
Now this is exactly what I was going to suggest. And speaking from previous experience, if a girl is going to be anyway interested in games, this game will do it. If they don't enjoy The Longest Journey, there's a damn good chance they won't enjoy any game beyond casual faggotry (I'm talking to you, Rock Band and the rest of those shitty Karaoke/rhythm games)

EDIT - Also I don't get why a lot of you seem to be advising against RPGs, citing that they require experience, and aren't a good place to start gaming. It's kind of a silly statement really. Playing a racing simulator, or an RTS isn't going to help even a little bit while playing an RPG, so the only way to get experience playing RPGs, is to play RPGs. Try starting her off with one of the old school SNES RPGs. Lufia & the Fortress of Doom perhaps? Or why not Super Mario RPG?

If you think she'd be more comfortable trying a more recent title, then The Longest Journey really is a great place to start. Although, Morrowind was the first RPG I'd played since Chrono Trigger, and I had NO problem getting into it and loving every second. I think I must have played that game for about sixteen hours straight the first day I had it, and then pretty much the same for the next few days.

People either click, or they don't when it comes to gaming. Try her out with some of the above suggestions, and see what happens. Trust me, you'll know she's into it if she asks you what time it is, and is slightly surprised by the answer.
