So there I was talking to a friend about Skyrim and both of us were getting all hyped up about when another one of my other friends came over and asked us what we were talking about. We replied and asked him whether he would be getting it, he asked us whether it would have co-op. We told him that it almost definitely wouldn't to which he replied that it would be, and I quote (sorry for anyone offended by language), 'another piece of shit RPG with no co-op that only a fucking idiot would play'. Naturally me and my friend turned away and decided to ignore him for a while but it got us talking and thinking about Co-op in RPGs and we couldn't think of any truly shining examples.

So The Escapist what do you think, should RPGs (Skyrim especially) have co-op? and can you name any really good examples of co-op RPG? (MMORPGs don't count).

(Apologies if I've done anything wrong, this is my first thread)

You can play most of the Tales of games with 1-4 people, I think.

Demon's Souls was kind of co-op, and I think it worked pretty well though it wasn't co-op in the traditional sense.

Anyways, it can be done... I'd like to see it done more, now that I think about it.

Yeah, but it isn't very fun. Tried it with my brother once, it's a bit frustrating.

Anyways, I don't really like co-op in RPGs. I don't think Skyrim should have co-op, it'd be impossible to pull off in that kind of game. Other games might do co-op decently, Mass Effect 2 seemed like it could have had it.

I don't like it in my RPGs, honestly.

Not even in Borderlands/Diablo, really.

Most of my Borderlands time was spent solo, and much more enjoyable than my co-op time, tbh. No stopping every 20 minutes to talk loot-swapping.

I *do* like it in Pokemon, even if it's limited to local-only Battle Tower.

Why wouldn't MMORPGs count? They are role playing games that have co-op.

Hey wait, wasn't this implemented in Dragon Quest IX?

The Tales of series is probably one of the best examples of RPG co-op. I found it to be extremely fun. I'd enjoy more co-op in more rpg games, if they pull it off properly.

I dunno, after two playthroughs solo on Borderlands, co-op was a really good change of pace for me. Especially with how some of the classes compliment each other.

Don't think I'd like to play a game like Diablo co-op though.

I enjoyed multiplayer in Baldur's Gate... but I still prefer my multiplayer role-playing to have fewer computers involved. In theory, a computer running your AD&D campaign should work great. In practice, there just isn't enough room for imagination. Role-playing video games tend to be more about telling you a story, less about collaborating with you to make one.

I play the Hell out of co-op RPG's when I can find them. Haven't seen too many really good ones since the days of Secret of Mana on the SNES though. RPG's aren't the kind of game you can play with a random stranger; co-op plays best when it's somebody you already get along well with. The right partner makes for an incredible gaming experience.

There is Borderlands.
As for Co-Op,it depends more on the style of rpg.If it is serious then you don't want your friend popping in but otherwise, why not (unless its Final Fantasy).Dragon Quest 9 was a good co-op game also.It should be more to the option of whether you want to play with friends or not.

The majority of my Diablo days were co-op, just as I forsee the majority of my Diablo 3 days becoming. Sure I'll probably beat it a couple times solo, but it's so much more fun to share that experience with a buddy. Especially when we get to screw each other over!

A game like Skyrim though would lose a lot of it's immersion co-op.

Edit:First post came up.
It depends more on how its done really.Personally,I say have an option and let people use their heads to choose whether to go through with it or not.Dragon Quest 9 did an excellent job co-oping the turn based game

The good ol' Infinity Engine games were great for co-op. Played through both Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale sagas in co-op with my friend. Good times.

I don't think it really could. Sure, combat would suit co-op, but the way dialogue and story is structured, the Other Guy would just sit twiddling his thumbs while the one playing Shepard does all the talking. Which would be especially jarring if they split up and OG's exploration is constantly interrupted by cutscene talk.

So OK, I did just mention Baldur's Gate as an example, but Bhaalspawn wasn't fully voice-acted, and that makes all the difference.

I've never come across one come to think of it. I don't see why it wouldn't work though, it could add a whole new dimension to the role playing.

Skyrim? Co-op? hm... It could, but it won't.

I like cooperative play in RPG's, when done well. Diablo 2, Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, Monster Hunter Tri... there are lots of examples of co-op done right. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 14 and Mindjack, among others, prove that not all games should have it. Sometimes things are better off as single-player games.

PS: Your "friend" is an ass.

Eh, true. Still think that the games powers would be rather fun mixed together between different players though. They could do a seperate mode thing, with just missions instead of throwing you into the games main plot. They still could have dialogue and such but maybe they could make it to how they're handling conversations for TOR in parties (everyone makes their choice and the game will randomly pick which one).

I'd like to play a sandbox co-op RPG. I think it would be fun to play in the same world and help each other if you wanted to, but otherwise do what you wanted alone.
