Why not? I don't think all games should have it, since I'm very much a single player sort of person, but I actually think co-op in RPGs has a lot of potential.

^ For this very reason.

Mind you, the only games I can think of which do implement this in WRPGs are the last two Fable games, and those games aren't exactly good examples of having any kind of depth to your game mechanics or role playing experience. Still, the technology and potential is quite obviously there. Just because Fable's a bad example doesn't mean it can't work elsewhere. Maybe the co-op was the best part of the last two Fables? I don't know. Never used it myself.

I think that's a bad example probably because Fable is a single player game where you CAN play co-op if you want to, but it doesn't make the most of it. The best co-op games are the ones meant to be played that way, where the game mechanics are built around co-operation and no-one feels like an add on.

Yep. I agree on that. I just wonder if Fable II and Fable III being generally poorly received games and bad examples of Co-Op as well as bad examples of lots of gameplay mechanics in general discouraged other people from trying it and implementing it in a less shallow way?

Moreover, from a profitability standpoint, I guess no one really wants to hinge their entire game on having two people play it, because not everyone has that capacity to have a friend round every single time they want to play an RPG. That's a real concern in an expensive game. In other words, I guess they have to aim for a fine balance where Co-Op isn't essential to gameplay, but thoroughly and fundamentally enhances it whenever someone else joins in, so that it actually feels meaningful.

On the other hand, I guess people are going to say, "There's MMORPGs for that." or, from the other side, "MMORPGs have had the technology for years. Why is it so hard to implement now?" so, who knows what the future will bring?

Yes. Definitely. Borderlands was so much fun with more people. And Diablo was a bit better with more people. Still didn't like it though.

I'm not sure if they would have to find a balance. The market is so saturated with single player RPG's, that the premise alone of one that's story revolves around two central characters, and that it gameplay mechanics, from everything from dialog to combat, revolved around co-operative play, would be original enough to get many people to try it out. And then, so long as it was a good game and the positive feedback got round, it could make a killing.

I would love a good co-op RPG. Not an action-RPG, a proper RPG. I love them, but they'd be great with a couple other people.

It would be ok if it wasn't a dialogue/story heavy RPG like Borderlands, otherwise you have some guy just sitting there during dialogue...

Then again my connection is so bad i spent most of Borderlands raging at it for lagging me out just before we finished a quest

I swear my internet connection has evolved sentience... And it hates me

Hm...honestly I don't like the idea of co-op RPGs. I'd get too shocked/annoyed/angry because the person wouldn't play the game EXACTLY as I want to play it. For instance, a friend and I were talking about Dragon Age: Origins and he said that he killed Connor's mother, instead of going to the Circle for help. I went, "What? Why?" "Because I wanted to. It's faster too." "You're a heartless monster!" See, if we had been playing co-op, I would have stopped him. I always do the "right" or "good" thing in RPGs. And I know many people don't like to do that and enjoy doing the evil things. I couldn't play with someone like that. It'd drive me nuts. Selfish? Perhaps.
RPGs are, to me, supposed to be a story that is meant solely for you that you can write however you want. Sharing that with someone else who doesn't have your exact same vision will get annoying, believe me.

I always liked Diablo and Diablo II. RPGs can work just fine with co op, it just has to be designed that way. It just depends on the game. I've actually been kind of wanting a nice solid co-cop RPG. I've been playing Vindictus but its got too much Korean repetitive BS for me.

So there I was talking to a friend about Skyrim and both of us were getting all hyped up about when another one of my other friends came over and asked us what we were talking about. We replied and asked him whether he would be getting it, he asked us whether it would have co-op. We told him that it almost definitely wouldn't to which he replied that it would be, and I quote (sorry for anyone offended by language), 'another piece of shit RPG with no co-op that only a fucking idiot would play'. Naturally me and my friend turned away and decided to ignore him for a while but it got us talking and thinking about Co-op in RPGs and we couldn't think of any truly shining examples.

So The Escapist what do you think, should RPGs (Skyrim especially) have co-op? and can you name any really good examples of co-op RPG? (MMORPGs don't count).

(Apologies if I've done anything wrong, this is my first thread)
sure as long as it doesnt take away from single player

Good example: Saints row 2

Bad example: Borderlands

Hmmmm, Borderlands combined some pretty good combat and RPG with Co-Op for some shooty fun, plus you can duel to!
