I think that's a bad example probably because Fable is a single player game where you CAN play co-op if you want to, but it doesn't make the most of it. The best co-op games are the ones meant to be played that way, where the game mechanics are built around co-operation and no-one feels like an add on.badgersprite said:Why not? I don't think all games should have it, since I'm very much a single player sort of person, but I actually think co-op in RPGs has a lot of potential.

Mind you, the only games I can think of which do implement this in WRPGs are the last two Fable games, and those games aren't exactly good examples of having any kind of depth to your game mechanics or role playing experience. Still, the technology and potential is quite obviously there. Just because Fable's a bad example doesn't mean it can't work elsewhere. Maybe the co-op was the best part of the last two Fables? I don't know. Never used it myself.
Yep. I agree on that. I just wonder if Fable II and Fable III being generally poorly received games and bad examples of Co-Op as well as bad examples of lots of gameplay mechanics in general discouraged other people from trying it and implementing it in a less shallow way?NinjaDeathSlap said:I think that's a bad example probably because Fable is a single player game where you CAN play co-op if you want to, but it doesn't make the most of it. I'm not sure if they would have to find a balance. The market is so saturated with single player RPG's, that the premise alone of one that's story revolves around two central characters, and that it gameplay mechanics, from everything from dialog to combat, revolved around co-operative play, would be original enough to get many people to try it out. And then, so long as it was a good game and the positive feedback got round, it could make a killing.badgersprite said:Yep. I agree on that. Moreover, from a profitability standpoint, I guess no one really wants to hinge their entire game on having two people play it, because not everyone has that capacity to have a friend round every single time they want to play an RPG. That's a real concern in an expensive game. In other words, I guess they have to aim for a fine balance where Co-Op isn't essential to gameplay, but thoroughly and fundamentally enhances it whenever someone else joins in, so that it actually feels meaningful.
On the other hand, I guess people are going to say, "There's MMORPGs for that." or, from the other side, "MMORPGs have had the technology for years. Why is it so hard to implement now?" so, who knows what the future will bring?
sure as long as it doesnt take away from single playeripop@you said:So there I was talking to a friend about Skyrim and both of us were getting all hyped up about when another one of my other friends came over and asked us what we were talking about. We replied and asked him whether he would be getting it, he asked us whether it would have co-op. We told him that it almost definitely wouldn't to which he replied that it would be, and I quote (sorry for anyone offended by language), 'another piece of shit RPG with no co-op that only a fucking idiot would play'. Naturally me and my friend turned away and decided to ignore him for a while but it got us talking and thinking about Co-op in RPGs and we couldn't think of any truly shining examples.
So The Escapist what do you think, should RPGs (Skyrim especially) have co-op? and can you name any really good examples of co-op RPG? (MMORPGs don't count).
(Apologies if I've done anything wrong, this is my first thread)
Hmmmm, Borderlands combined some pretty good combat and RPG with Co-Op for some shooty fun, plus you can duel to!ipop@you said:So The Escapist what do you think, should RPGs (Skyrim especially) have co-op? and can you name any really good examples of co-op RPG? (MMORPGs don't count).
