I sortof search bar-ed this.

Why is it that loads of supervillains (and some regular peeps too) want to rule the world?
What a shit job!!!

How difficult would it be to rule the world? I mean, I know you could toy with it like a giant version of the Sims or SimCity, but that'd get boring very soon and would be a ***** to set up.

What's your opinion?

(I know that this rant could do with some fleshing out, but it's 00:38 here and I'm a little tired but wanted to make the point).

I would not want to rule the world. You would have to take care of problems like famine, war, and drought. That is to much work for me. I guess you could just let the people die, but the you would have nothing to rule.

For me, the advantages would be:

I am above the law.
I will more than likely be rich.
I can treat anyone however I want.
I have security.
Hopefully a nice mistress.
I can make laws.
And I have an army at my fingers.

Shoudln't be that hard to rule the world by force, especially if I look after my army in order to keep them from joining whatever silly guerilla group fancies being infiltrated by my thought police.

Ninja'd

Another thing I think it is is that most writers can't think of anything else, or maybe it's just a cheesy way to drive the point deeper into the subject's skull that the person is indeed evil.

My reason is because if I bring the whole world under one rule, everyone will be friends forever.
No more countries, and therefor no more stupid pointless hatred.
If I suck at it, I'll just give the job to someone else.
And because the world is all one big place instead of seperated, nobody would fight for the seat of ultimate power because they'd all turn into not-people and be nice and fair to everyone.
Yeah.

i disagree with the word supervillains, i would take over the world for public convience

everyone would use the same currency, everyone would speak the same language (earthish), there would be no borders so no passports. it would just mean that going on holiday is that little easier

join my bid to take over the world and take all the hassle out of your holiday ;)

Because you're at the top - nobody tells you what to do any longer, and if they do, you can have them executed in public via thumbscrews, if you want.

You have ultimate power.

My first thought was "Why would you want to rule humans?"

I'll just leave the ruling to God. He seems to be doing a much better job than I could.

to be honest if you rule the world with an authoritarian regime then its you against 4 billion, im not a gambling man but even i can see that the odds would not be in your favour.

shootthebandit, taking the hassle out of your holidays. also if i was world leader id get rid of car insurance, loans, remortgages and injury lawyers. how much do these bastards annoy you (apart from that polite russian meerkat, he would be my sidekick)

But, if you rule the world, what use is an army? I mean it's not like you can conquer anything new.

Well if you're truly evil you will have masses of bureaucrats beneath you to carry out your bidding. The odd genocide here and there is pretty evil but it is tiny in comparison to masses of bureaucracy.

The taking over part is the fun part, the ruling afterwards is the boring part.
Anyway, you can use your power for various purposes, like destroying the world
(It will be much easier, now you've taken care of those who would oppose you),
or taking revenge on your childhood bullies
(You could torture their families and friends to a slow and agonizing death, while forcing them to watch, before having them get a similar fate.),
or you could give the power back to who it belonged to before and see if you can take over again, but this time with one arm behind your back...
(Recommended only for those who like a challenge.)
The possibilities are endless.

Ruling the world is bollocks. I absolutely guarantee you that no one alive today could rule the world without screwing it up or getting selfish and dangerous.
