Guillermo del Toro has a great visual style, but he's just not a very good director. Every movie of him that I've seen looks very unique and striking, but the acting and the story are always severely lacking.

And everything about the modern day Tom Cruise has become infused with his creepy, batshit-insane behaviour. I just can't suspend my disbelief anymore when I look at the guy.

His religion bearing similarities to the Cthulhu mythos might be somewhat responsible...
