Nah, The Half Life games have always been so...impending, that you never have time to stay in one place let alone return to somewhere you have been before. This just wouldn't fit. The news updates of HL3 help show that at least someone cares about us.

I'll bet a small box of sweeites and my firstborn that HL2:EP3, should it ever be released, will suffer from the Duke Nukem effect.

Except HL3 will have always been under development by Valve, not shifting through multiple studios like DNF, HL2 was released after Halo and EP1 and EP2 were released after Halo 2 and the weapon limit wasn't changed despite Halo's huge success. There is no Reason to believe that it will suffer from the Duke Nukem effect.

A common fan theory holds that Episode 3 has in fact been canceled, and Valve is hard at work integrating its content into Half Life 3.

I thoroughly hope so, as much as I have been anxious for that shit forever, it would be so anti-climatic for everyone if valve just put out Episode 3 after all this time. They killed 'episodic gaming' by neglecting episode 3 ages ago.

I firmly believe that Valve will never announce HL3, we will just walk into the store one day to find it sitting on the shelves.

Let me put it this way. Half Life 3 is mentioned as a footnote on Half Life's wikipedia page. Kingdom Hearts 3 has it's own page and it's not even announced yet.
