Rumor: Will Smith Signs On for Independence Day Sequels

Flush in money after the ludicrous success of James Cameron's Avatar [http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-DVD-Combo/dp/B002VPE1B6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1278950751&sr=1-1], 20th Century Fox has reportedly locked down actor Will Smith to return for a pair of sequels to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day (aka ID4).

It may be hard to think back to a time before Independence Day [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97770-Avatar-Becomes-Highest-Grossing-Film-Ever].

Released in 1996, ID4 told the story of humanity's resistance against an alien invasion of Earth, and went on to gross some $816,969,268 at the box office worldwide. With that sort of success, it's no wonder that Hollywood big wigs have been wanting to make a sequel for quite some time, but there was a catch. While the film's stars Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman were all decently well-known at the time, Mr. Smith has become quite a bit more successful since 1996 (in part due to the success of ID4, ironically) and is now one of the most expensive movie actors around.

20th Century Fox executives were unwilling to shellac out the cash necessary to get Smith on board for an ID4 comeback - at least, they were unwilling to do so before James Cameron's Avatar left them swimming in moolah. Now, reports IESB [http://iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5599:iesb-exclusive-fox-chairman-tom-rothman-goes-on-the-record-part-3&catid=43:exclusive-features&Itemid=73], Will Smith has reportedly been locked into not one but two ID4 sequels, which will allegedly be made back-to-back (like the Lord of the Rings films, or the second and third parts of both the Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogies).

The film will supposedly be directed and written by the original ID4 duo, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin (respectively), and given that Emmerich just recently flexed his disaster-movie chops in 2012, should feature lots of things blowing up very, very prettily. According to IESB's sources, though, production on ID4-2 will have to wait until both Emmerich and Smith are done with their current projects (Emmerich is directing Shakespearean thriller Anonymous, while Smith is working on either The City That Sailed or Men in Black 3).

I'm not sure what exactly the story could be for another ID4, let alone two of them. The aliens return, we fight them off again - twice? What gives? But I do know that I loved the hell out of the first movie, so maybe they'll be guilty pleasure popcorn flicks. Actually, I'm pretty sure there's no "maybe" there at all.

Now, just because I can, I'm embedding Bill Pullman's speech from the end of ID4 - also known as one of the most awesome moments in anything ever:

Hmmm... I really loved that movie...
Its probably my favourite alien flick
But a sequel?

It seemed like one of a more one-off kinda films to me...
But a sequel could fit in...

Do they get to blow up the weirdo hippies? Or did they finally learn?

Aw, who am I kidding... they never learn, they're going to get blown up again and I'll see it on the Big Screen once more!

How could they make a second one?

Well, I would welcome it as long as it didnt go too far into the rediculous...

And also, that is the most epic speech ever, agreed!

As I read this announcement, I'm reminded of the fake commercials at the beginning of Tropic Thunder - specifically the fake franchise action movie trailer for Scorcher, when Tug Speedman (Ben Stiller) says "Here we go again... again".

I'm exceedingly curious how they'd even justify one sequel to Independence Day, but two? I see no possible way that reasoning will be something other than hysterically amusing in it's stupidity. Yay laughter!

Well, I need to see the first.

I wasn't kidding when I told everyone I don't watch movies.

Why does he keep calling it ID4?

[small]Sorry if I'm out of the loop[/small]

Also these movies will probably be terrible. There is no need for a sequel when everything tied up nicely in the first one.
Also as I recall the movie made so much money because it was released on American Independence day and was heavily advertised suggesting people to see it opening day.

Could be good, but Movie Sequels fluctuate with quality, so lets wait and see.

A sequel? Why its like War of the Worlds 2!!! Damn pointless!!!

The aliens were decimated by humans, so what their children from the planet Zyrhoas have grown up and want to avenge their parents death?

Also i see this film being covered in the unpleasant goo of american patriotism. So im calling it now,

THE ALIENS ARE GOING TO INVADE IN THE SAME BLOODY WEEK AS THEY DID BEFORE!!!

I predict that the ID4-2 will end the same way as Halo 2.

President "Will Smith what are you doing on that ship?"
Will Smith "Sir, finishing this fight!"

Independence Day was brilliant. For a number of reasons, mainly though because of Will Smith's reaction to the alien popping out of the ship.
*PUNCH*
Y'know, this was supposed to be my weekend off. But no! You got me out here, draggin' your heavy ass, through the burnin' desert, with your dreadlocks sticking out the back of my parachute. You gotta come down here with an attitude, actin' all big and bad. And what the hell is that smell?! [screams and kicks the alien] I could've been at a barbecue! But I ain't mad.

I just got a snippet of the new story planned for the sequels;

It is revealed that the alien overlord is Steve Jobs, and his Apple products contain mind control technology. The President will once again give his Independance Day speech near the end.

Emmerich, who made the first movie was quoted as saying "Duh Apple is the big overlord, I'm surprised no one put that together at the end of the first movie. What are the odds that an Apple laptop are compatible with a totally unknown alien computer system?"

Independence Day was a brilliant film. I don't know if I want more Will Smith though.
